“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”

Warbler, laws protecting you at your workplace are different from laws protecting you from the government. If you routinely don’t come dressed appropriately for your job, you can get fired. If you make a public statement that potentially can make the company look bad and thus hurt sales, you can get fired.

The First Amendment gives the right to freedom of speech, association, assembly, and the press. It does not inherently protect you at your job.

I will no longer be discussing this subject.

As far as I know, this guy hasn’t killed anyone or committed any acts of violence. Until he breaks some law, he has as much right to be a nazi someone does to be a member of BLM. That is the way America works.

Try to imagine the most deeply personal and offensive thing a person could do or say against you (up to but not including breaking the law), then imagine you are that person’s boss, then imagine you keep employing them.

Tell me, if I were the owner of an NFL team, would I have the right to fire players to for kneeling to the National Anthem?

What if the boss in your argument were a Nazi himself wanted to fire an employee for being anti-nazi?

Also, BLM =/= Nazis (“It ain’t even the same sport”) and it’s troubling that you think they are comparable.

comparable in only one way: in the eyes of the government a person has as much right to nazi as he does to be a member of blm.

Seeing MLK association mentioned as equal to Nazi association makes me sick.
Having to say “Nazis are bad” makes me sick.
Why do I ever click on this thread?

I DID NOT SAY MLK WAS EQUAL TO THE NAZIS!!!

ffs

Your post makes it seem as though you think hating Nazis is as antiquated as hating MLK supporters. Or that Nazi Hate should change for the same reasons.

That’s BS.

And you certainly seem to think that there’s nothing wrong with a “peaceful” Nazi.

I NEVER SAID THAT!!!

Of course there is something wrong with being a peaceful nazi!

My point is that in America, you have just as much right to be a peaceful nazi as you do to be a peaceful Christian.

Warb, I was wrong. Liking Frank Sinatra and Star Wars is not enough to make you cool if you also support Nazism in any way.

I do not support Nazism. I support the right to think and believe what you want. I support the 1st amendment. I support the idea of disapproving of what one has to say, but defending to the death that person’s right to say it.

The first amendment protects him from the government doing anything to him for his opinions. It does not protect him from private businesses.

but it does protect against the government saying you can be fired for holding x,y,z opinions but not a,b,c opinions.

You can absolutely be fired for your political beliefs in America – that’s how America has worked every day since its inception. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, and whether we should change the way America works so that you can’t do this, is open for discussion.

Again, being a Nazi isn’t equivalent to being a member of BLM, in the same sense that being a cannibal is not equivalent to being a vegetarian.

The way America works is if you can be fired by being a Nazi, you can also be fired for being a member of BLM.

You don’t have to be fired specifically for being a Nazi (or BLM). You can be fired or other reasons, like creating an uncomfortable working environment for other employees or clients/customers, or for a personality conflict. At that’s to start with. It might be shaky, depending on the individual circumstances, but an employer isn’t absolutely obligated to employ someone if they are disruptive in some way.

Do we know if Tony Hovater was disruptive in the work place?

The fact that he wasn’t fired until this story came out seems to suggest that he must have behaved himself in the workplace and kept his opinions to himself (or the workplace knew he was a nazi and had no problem with it until it became public knowledge).

And that’s stupid.

Discuss.

So you would want the government to be able decide what opinions a boss can fire you for? You want the government to be able to decide which group affiliation bosses can fire you for?

There was a time when people would want to fire people for having any affiliation with Communism. Heck in the south, there was time when many would want to fire their employees for having anything to do with MLK or the NAACP.

So the Nazi getting fired is a “Yay America!” moment now? I’m fine with that.

I will agree I won’t be shedding any tears for the guy.

It’s arguable that this is self inflicted as the guy agreed to be interviewed. Being a closet Nazi isn’t a political position or an opinion, it’s being supportive of some of the most horrible crimes committed in human history.

I don’t know. I don’t like the idea of my boss firing me because he doesn’t like my beliefs of whatever group I belong to.
