Mrebo! long time no see! How are you?
This user has been banned.
Mrebo! long time no see! How are you?
Did the guy even get a warning for using the r-word?
No, but he did make a large public apology and agree to never use the word again.
Well that’s good.
Knowing nothing about Jay’s occupation that’s assuming an awful lot about his free time. How often do you even see him post here compared to us mods?
All I assume is that he has enough free time to be the admin of a Star Wars forum.
Does he though? I barely see him post.
if he doesn’t, that is a problem right there.

As Jay pays for this forum out of his own pocket, (we haven’t even had advertising in years) he doesn’t owe you guys a darn thing.
This isn’t a matter of owing anyone anything. This is a matter of him being the sole admin of a Star Wars forum. That kind of dictates that he should see TLJ in a timely manner.
Ok, if I am understanding things correctly, someone described a character in TLJ by using the r-word. It of course pissed off Frink and he responded using the f-word and other things and got temp banned for it. Did the person using the r-word get banned or disciplined at all?
No, and that’s what I think is the real injustice.
They only said it once. And they did get warned that it’s not acceptable.
How many times they said shouldn’t matter. The point is, the rules say that any use of slurs results in an “immediate and permanent ban with no prior warning.” Jay should at least apply his rules equally.
I agree, but here is the problem: what constitutes a slur in terms of Jays rules? Obviously people can not read Jay’s mind and know he thinks is and is not a slur. It is possible Jay does not think the r-word is a slur.
Jay has said more bans are likely as he reviews the thread. And he hasn’t even seen the movie yet so he’s spoiling himself in the process.
He should watch it first then. This is his site, so he should have already watched it.
People are busy, y’know.
People can make time for things.
Dude, the movie has only been out for less than a week.
Jay is the admin of a Star Wars forum. That kind of means he should seen new Star Wars movies in a timely manner.
Jay has said more bans are likely as he reviews the thread. And he hasn’t even seen the movie yet so he’s spoiling himself in the process.

Besides, if he can’t ban the person the used the r-word, because he hasn’t read the thread because he hasn’t seen TLJ, then how can be ban Frink? Someone with banning power must have Frinks post.
I think it was Jason or Wook. Jay did post in the thread, but that doesn’t mean he read more than the post that was reported.
responsible modding dictates that you read all posts involved, not just the post that was reported. If whoever banned Frink has seen TLJ, they can go in and read the rest of the posts as well and respond to the use of the r-word.

I hope the person who used that word is a part of those bannings.
It wasn’t willfully offensive, though. He just used R in lieu of, say, the word idiot.
But is it really acceptable to do that? The more I think about it, the more I think the term just shouldn’t be used at all.
People over there are all comparing the r-word to the n-word—while I understand the need to try not to be offensive, the r-word is not omgwhattheheckdidyoujustsay levels of offensive that’s worthy of instaban—despite it hitting a sensitive chord for some people.

true, but he is the admin here so it is not unreasonable to expect him to watch TLJ in a timely manner so he can admin over the spoiler threads.

That same person can read the rest of the posts in the thread. If Frink was banned without his post being read, I think it would therefore be unfair to say you can’t discipline the guy that used the r-word because you haven’t read his post.

I don’t know. I have seen the posts involved in this situation and I can’t cause they are in a spoiler thread and I haven’t seen TLJ yet. As for the r-word. I don’t us it. But it is as offensive as the n-word? I don’t know. I know Frink is very sensitive to it due to his child. Which is understandable. I am sure many other are sensitivity as well. I certainly don’t think it should be used in reference to anyone with mental problems. I think that would definitely be offensive. Apparently Jay doesn’t think the r-word is an offensive slur. I am more leaning on the side that it is offensive. The more I think about it, the more I don’t want to use the term at all.
edit: I posted the above before seeing this post:

I’m guilty of over-reacting here as well. And, for me at least, it’s because for a long time, it was nearly impossible to get the moderation to do anything unless a post was really over the top vile (like the guy who posted 100 anime dicks). So things naturally escalated,
I agree.

It’s a temporary ban. I think Frink needs to learn how to express his displeasure with others’ posts without flipping out every time.
Not permanent.
I am glad it is not permanent.
Wow! Frink got banned‽‽‽
ok, Merry Christmas. But please come back afterwards.
I am somewhat worried about Bingo. With the what he has be saying he has been going through and the fact that there is zero activity on his account for over 10 days, it is a little concerning.
Ouch, sorry to hear your parents split. That is one thing I was very fortunate in, my parents loved each other very much and got along very well. Of course there were arguments, nowhere near the splitting kind of argument. Now of course with my father’s passing splitting is impossible. Maybe as they get used to being split, they will become less depressed, but who am I to predict such thing? I have no expertise with this sort of thing. I wish there was more I could think of to say. I hope things get better for you. Hang in there. I be praying.
It is not a very good likeness.
Alright, that was what I has assumed you were referring to. My mistake. Sorry. Could please tell me where this text is that you read. Could you quote it or link to it?
Ok, where was this comment? Could you post it here so that I could read it?
To be clear, was it this?
"Mike and Dave address and react to the released body cam footage and information on the tragic incident where Daniel Shaver lost his life at the hans of a police officer, recently acquitted of 2nd degree murder. While many may think this is just a clear black and white case with sides to be chosen, we explore the shooting from both technical and practical perspectives in an objective a way as we can.
We take no pleasure in the loss of life and as Dave explains (from the perspective of someone who has had to do this) there is no real winner in that situation. We do not condone unnecessary violence while recognizing that in the course of police work, violence is sometimes an unavoidable engagement.
This video reaction contains some of the body cam footage and is intended ONLY for educational purposes and not for the purpose of entertainment. Our views are our own and do not represent anyone official, our departments or otherwise."
I think the first point just shows that both officers are guilty.
really?
The second seems week to me because that shouldn’t have any bearing on whether they execute the surrendering man.
the 2nd point shows why it many have been dangerous for them to approach the suspects as opposed to having the the suspects come to them.
As for the rifle, how does executing the surrendering suspect prevent a guy with a long rifle from shooting them?
it doesn’t. But that is not the point. They didn’t know if a third person with a rifle was still in the room. Now, add in the possibility that rounds could go through the hotel walls and that makes in even more dangerous to approach the suspects and thus put officers directing on the other side of the wall from the room the suspects were it.
Like I said, it’s incompetence at best, murder at worst.
incompetence, maybe. murder, I don’t think so.
That “good cop” in the video should find either of those to be huge problems. It’s the good cops that make excuses for these bad ones, always, and that needs to stop.
What also needs to stop are people assuming the cop the guilty without being willing to take an open minded look at the situation.
Anyway, since you won’t watch the video, what you think of Mike The Cop’s take on the situation is suspect.
I don’t know what you disagree with me on because you won’t tell me.
I did tell you, when we talked about it before. I was hoping another perspective would help, especially that of one with training and experience. But you refuse to listen to it. So I give up.
That’s a lie actually. I read that other man’s perspective.
You read what he said in the description. That hardly his perspective. I listed a few points from the video, was any of that in what you previously read?
You’re hiding behind an hour-long video that no one in their right mind would be willing to sit through in order to ignore the opposing argument.
I am not hiding behind anything. I told you what I thought the first time we discussed this case. I am not the one that is ignoring something.
Hello? I can’t say it here!
