I think the bigger issue you all seem to be missing here is that The Doctor will be regenerating at all!

It was clearly established in the first serial that he was just some old dude that lived in a scrapyard. Non-canonical elements like him being a Timelord and being able to regenerate, were only introduced to explain away the change of actor after 5-years. The canon should be respected and all episodes after Hartnell should be erased (something the BBC tried hard to do back in the day!).

If I am not mistaken the very first episode makes clear that the Doctor and Susan are not human. No, regeneration was never explained until 3 years later, but I don’t see how regeneration violates the cannon.

Would it bother you if it were a black doctor? After all, all the doctors have been white for 50 years.

What I don’t understand is why they didn’t go all the way PC and choose a black female gay actor to play the part.

believe it or not, I don’t think racial switch would bother me so much. But would still bother me, after over 20 regenerations of various characters seen in both new and old Who, that not once did race change.

Also, I guess I have to read a thread I don’t care about now.

It’s not all this last page in this thread has it cracked up to be. Basically they are making the doctor a female, and warbler is opposed to it simply because of character reasons and because it’s a long running series and he’s used to it being a male. I don’t know if people actually think warb is a sexist pig or if they are just poking fun at him but either way he’s obviously not a sexist pig he just doesn’t want a fictional character he likes to change and is not harming or bEing prejudiced against actual trans people at all so I really think everyone needs to relax.

PS Ive never seen doctor who so I have no opinion on the actual issue.

I think there’s really only one person getting worked up about it.

Yeah, I am sure I am the only one in the world upset about this. right.

Maybe you should have said only one person here? Oh wait. I think OOjason voiced his disapproval too.

I just think it’s a silly sci-fi show and still don’t understand why a character who changes bodies constantly can’t become a woman. I’m honestly surprised it’s taken so long.

This “silly” show has existed for over 50 years now. Maybe it is important to some fans? What I don’t understand is if a Timelords can switch genders via regeneration, why in the over 20 regenerations seen from various characters in both new and old Who not once did gender change until Missy. Not once.

I don’t think he’s a sexist pig but he is certainly trying his hardest to act like one.

whatever.

So is Wonder Woman. What do you think would happened if they made a movie and cast a man in the part and called it Wonder Man?

Do you really not understand why that would be an issue or are you just being facetious?

If it is ok to switch a character from male to female, it must follow that it is ok to switch a character from female to male.

Refresh my memory, weren’t people kvetching that Capaldli was too old when he was cast? IIRC,

I am not a fan of Capaldi.

No one could ever say he was too old, not unless they forgot about Hartnell.

some thought Peter Davidson was a bit young back in 1982. No matter who is cast in the role, somebody is going to have a cow.
And lest we forget, regeneration wasn’t even conceived of until Hartnell was leaving the role back in 1966.

irrelevant.

I think that style of police box is a bit older, as I saw one in a 1930’s British film. Unless it really was the Tardis.

It’s a darn good thing Curzon Dax wasn’t a regular on TNG before DS9. 😉

the first time we saw Dax and got to learn about the character it was after Dax has switched genders. Also we didn’t get Dax switching hosts 12 times over 50 years and never once switching gender.

Dr. Crusher’s male Trill lover, (our introduction to the species on TNG) did switch genders.

Was that a character someone we knew for over 50 years as one gender? Did the character switch hosts 12 times over that 50 years, not once changing gender?

btw, it went into hosts that had different gender, the Trill symbiont itself did not switch gender.

The idea of stopping to watch a TV show because a woman is a main character is ridiculous to me.

You missing the point. This isn’t because the main character is female. This is because a character who was male

FOR OVER 50 YEARS!!!

is now suddenly female.

I’m not sure if you noticed, but a lot of things have changed from 50 years ago.

ok, I’m not going to talk to you about this anymore cause you just don’t want to get it and you don’t want to listen. Please go on considering me the sexist pig you know me to be.

We have seen / been told that Gallifreyans regenerate into a different sex before too - The Corsair or The Master/Missy for example…

There’s that tired excuse again. This “precedent” was created after Moffat was accused of sexism and the new fangirls started demanding a female Doctor. Since then to combat that image he kowtowed and started to introduce those elements. Nowhere in the classic series is something like this hinted at. If NuWho can’t get the Doctor’s age right, I’m certainly not going to trust it with something like this.

I’ll be watching the Christmas Special and first episode of series 11 but will probably be stopping after that. I would not be surprised to see the show’s ratings start to drop after this.

Not so much a ‘tired excuse’ if it is new, no?

To me it’s all the same series - Doctor Who.

We also recently saw a Gallifreyan regenerate from an old white man into a young black woman - just seemed to be part of the Gallifreyan life.

Did it ever happen before Missy came along? Did it ever happen in the old series? We went 50 years without a regeneration causing a gender change. Moffat added that capability for PC reasons, as oojason said.

I think some people are forgetting that this show (which, for disclosure, I have never seen) is “fiction.”

I’ve only seen a couple episodes and from what I understand there are all manners of science fictional, fantastical, magical elements. Guess becoming a different gender is too unbelievable or something, who knows, I’m sure there’s a reasonable and non-reactionary anti-PC explanation for the outrage.

yeah I know, I am a sexist pig.
