Also, I do feel a little bad making fun of Warb so much over this, given how much more he cares than I do.

What is it I care about more than you?

A fictional character being changed.

Well it is obvious that you are not a much a Doctor Who fan(not just because you don’t mind a female Doctor).

I already explained it has nothing to do with Doctor Who. It could be a female Luke in a Star Wars reboot and I wouldn’t care.

Well I will guarantee you that I would not be the only one that cared, if that were to happen.

Having diverse characters in fiction can also help traditionally privileged people too, like white men. Maybe we’d have less sexism and racism if we expose people to this early.

Doctor Who had been diverse, it had characters that were black, women, gay, it even had two black female characters.

Look, I don’t think you’re being a sexist pig. I think you’re just extremely rigid in your thinking and the fact that you can’t accept a fictional character changing is the problem.

Captain Katherine Janeway is a fiction character. Do you think there wouldn’t be complaints from the feminist if they did a reboot and made Janeway a man? Do you think there wouldn’t be complaints from the NAACP if they reboot DS9 and cast a white guy as Sisko? Do you think I can describe men as being “sidelined” by them choosing a women for the next Doctor.

They’d probably have a point. You do not. I hate to say it but it’s white male privilege again.

ah here we go again. The excuse that justifies anything.

I put my phone in my right pocket. Putting a phone in the back pocket just seems wrong to me.

What are you, a woman?

(intentionally sexist joke)

As the creator of this thread, I forbid sexist jokes, and the discussion of politics here. Keep it out and stay on topic please and thankyou.

If you look at the link provided by yhwx, you will see some are complaining about women of color being “sidelined”.

Yeah but you’re still complaining.

I’m a white male so it is very difficult to plant myself fully in someone different’s shoes, but I’ll try. If I were black, I’d probably be tired of all the white characters. If I were female, I’d probably be tired of all the male characters. And if I were a black female, I’d probably be tired of both.

It’s called sympathy. I try to have some.

Just because I complain about the changing of gender of character that hasn’t changed gender in over 50 years, does not mean I am unsympathetic to the years of sexism and racist that women and minorities have had to endure. But that doesn’t mean I have to approve of all the ridiculousness that extremists do.

If I read that correctly, you’re saying people who want more women/minorities in media are extremists.

If you didn’t mean that, that was a very awkward laugh I just had.

You read it incorrectly. There is a big difference between wanting more women/minority characters and wanting to change characters already established as white/male to female/minority. Did you see me ever complain about the Doctor getting minority companions? or the addition of a gay character?

It’s called sympathy. I try to have some. Bitching about political correctness, especially as with something as trivial as a TV show, is the opposite of sympathy.

Then it stands that the only way to make every group happy, would have been to make the next Doctor female, gay, transgender, and part every other race but white.

Ok, fellow white lady nerds, I lost my shit about a female dr who too. I am pumped. It feels like there’s a change in the air. BUT,

https://twitter.com/amydieg/status/886629959795699712

We need to pay attention to the fact that WOC [women of color] are being sidelined for this movement of powerful women in mainstream nerd media.

There are more tweets in this thread. To view them, click on one of the links above.

See this is the problem. If a black female was chosen, they would complain about Latino, Native American, Asian, Middle Eastern ect, women being sidelined. I guess they should have found a female, gay, transgender, part every race but white, person to play the new Doctor. But I bet then there would still be complaints about some group(not white men) being sidelined.

edited for clarity.
