New, series, new take on things. That is how creativity works.

It may be a new series, but if I am not mistaken, this is not considered a reboot. As far as I know, Discovery is suppose to take place in the same universe as TOS, nextgen, and the other series’.

yeah i know. but every series has their own transporter beam look, don’t they?

That can attributed to changes in technology. Plus you do have to allow for the improvement in special effects through the years.

These are not Klingons.

These are Klingons.

FTFY

I knew someone was going to bring that up. Clearly when they were doing TOS they didn’t have the capability to make Klingons look like they do in the movies and nextgen and the rest of the tv series’. They eventually explained the difference in appearance in Enterprise. They have not as far as I know explained the appearance of Klingons in Discovery. With the history of the change in the appearance in the cannon already, any attempt to explain this new change in appearance will be far fetched. The change was unnecessary. One could argue the appear of Klingons in TOS looked cheap and clearly they did not have the budget or the capabilities to make Klingons look how the should. The same is not so of the movies and nextgen and the rest of the series’ If they had wanted, they could have make the Klingons look like they do in Discovery. The look of Klingons in the movies and nextgen and the other series’s has become iconic. There was no need to change them. What is next? Giving Vulcans and Romulans square ears instead of the iconic pointed ones? Finally in my opinion, the nextgen Klingons just look better.

You mean you think the lyric writer(s) actually meant genes? I think the lyric writer(s) used jeans because it rhymes with means.

Genes also rhymes with means.

Yes, but I think it is a bit of a jump to assume genes was actually what was meant there.

Weren’t they the kids of his maid who died unexpectedly?

Yes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diff'rent_Strokes

“The series stars Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, two African American boys from Harlem who are taken in by a rich white Park Avenue businessman and widower named Phillip Drummond (Conrad Bain) and his daughter Kimberly (Dana Plato), for whom their deceased mother previously worked.”

They’ll have theirs, you’ll have yours, and I’ll have mine.
And together we’ll be fine!"

A rich man is born rich, a poor man is born poor. Let the rich have their riches and the poor have their poverty and it will all be okay.

You sure you’re not reading too much into the lyrics?

That the what the lyrics are saying. The show didn’t have a rich white man passing his wealth to the poor in a general act of altruism. He took on two specific poor children from Harlem.

He adopted those kids and treated them like they were his own sons. In one episode he tried to give them his last name, the only reason they didn’t take it was to preserve the last name of their biological father. I’ve watch many episodes of that show. He loved those two kids like a father loves his sons.

That in itself has unfortunate resonance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6ha7TK13_0

I have never seen the Color Purple, so I don’t understand what you are referring to here.

I prefer to link to an article and at least give people a chance to decide for themselves, so here you go Warb.

You know, I think people have to realize that people did use the n-word. It happened. Its real. It was not right. But it happened. I agree the word is offensive. I never use it. But it was used and unfortunately racists today still use it. It is simply not realistic to depict racists and not having them use the word. I don’t see the reason why a book like “To Kill a Mockingbird” should be banned just because it depicts racists using that word. Roots also has racists using that word. Should it be banned? It depicts slavery. How would you realistically depict slave masters and overseers referring to slaves without having them use the n-word? The same it true for racists. This is why the word became so offensive, because it was how the master, overseer, and racist referred to black people. I suppose next we will ban all movies and books about WWII if they have American soldiers referring to the Japanese as j__s.

Probably to cater to people like me who’ve never even heard of it. But then again I do live under a rock.

You’ve never heard of Murder on the Orient Express??? Dame Agatha Christie’s most famous book? Don’t watch the new movie, read the book and then watch David Suchet’s version.

If it is true, you do indeed live under a rock.

I prefer the Sidney Lumet 1974 version. It has a cast to die for and as much as I like Suchet the television version adds much to the book which isn’t needed.

perhaps, but Suchet IS Poirot. No one else can play the part like he can. That is why I was recommending his version of the story.

Another version wouldn’t hurt though. Look how many versions of Hound of the Baskervilles exist. Rathbone’s version is still my favorite but I love the Jeremy Brett one too.

Yeah I know. I have seen both versions. Both are good, but I am still looking my definitive Holmes and therefore still waiting for a definitive version of Hound of the Baskervilles.

I see there is yet another version of Murder on the Orient Express coming out in theaters. Now, Murder on the Orient Express is a classic murder mystery. I highly recommend it. But why do we need yet another film version. There have been more theatrical versions and made for tv versions than I can count. Why do we need another one? It is not like not everyone knows who done it.

btw, I would recommend the version with David Suchet, as he is THE Poirot.

Apparently, people are still angry about the “War on Christmas.”

http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/13/politics/trump-values-voters-summit/index.html

President Donald Trump dove into America’s culture wars on Friday, touting his administration for “returning moral clarity to our view of the world” and ending “attacks on Judeo-Christian values.”

Trump, nine months into his presidency, has found it harder to get things done than the ease with which he made promises on the campaign trail, making speeches to adoring audiences like Friday’s in Washington key to boosting the President’s morale. And the audience at the Values Voter Summit, an annual socially conservative conference, didn’t fail to deliver.

“We are stopping cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values,” Trump said to applause, before slamming people who don’t say “Merry Christmas.”

“They don’t use the word Christmas because it is not politically correct,” Trump said, complaining that department stores will use red and Christmas decorations but say “Happy New Year.” “We’re saying Merry Christmas again.”

The comment drew thunderous applause.

Heated debates over the “War On Christmas” have raged for years, with many on the right complaining that political correctness has made it less acceptable to say Merry Christmas. Trump has seized on these feelings, regularly telling primarily religious audiences that his presidency has made it acceptable to “start saying Merry Christmas again.”

“You go into a department store. When was the last time you saw ‘Merry Christmas?’ You don’t see it anymore,” Trump said on the campaign trail. “They want to be politically correct. If I’m president, you will see ‘Merry Christmas’ in department stores, believe me, believe me.”

For those of you who’d like to learn a little bit more about America’s newest Senator, there’s this.

That is technically not true. He not yet a US Senator. Even if he wins the election in December, he still won’t be a Senator until he officially takes office.

I wish you would read all the posts before responding.

Sorry.

Seriously, I remember when guys like this were cardboard character movie villains. Er, cardboard character movie villains WITHOUT the power of a US Senator, that is.

I move that if Alabama elects this asshole, we pass a Constitutional Amendment that kicks Alabama out of the Union. If a state doesn’t want to act like it is part of America, it shouldn’t be allowed to be part of America. Allowing the language currently in the Alabama Constitution and electing things like Moore the US Senate is not American.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to call him crazy, but it’s wrong to say that he’s mentally ill.

Perhaps it is wrong to conclude he is mentally ill, but I do not think it is wrong to suspect it.
