Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)

I'm willing to loan the tape to someone than can do a proper job of capturing it if this tape is deemed worthy of the effort.

Hi Foam.

What you've got there is almost a holy grail. If this looks as good as your screencap indicates, we're all in for a treat.

There is a reliable and trusted forum member here (they're all trusted and reliable, really) who has done beautiful captures of the PAL Droids tapes. His name's RetardedTed, and I'm sure he can be persuaded to take on this assignment. I'll PM him about it this instant.

Thank you for coming forward.

Fritz

Droids Series Complete Set. Reconstruction from multiple sources. V1.0 is out! (Released)

Sorry for the long breaks between updates.

I finished the Great Heep episode. Using SRestore for standard scenses and then a simple blend for the panning/zooming scenes.

Yes, that's the solution I would have suggested, but I didn't think anyone would be patient enough to do it. No question about your commitment, Sir.

I thank you for doing this, and am looking forward to seeing the results.

Info Wanted: Is this amateur audio recording of Star Wars in '77 any use?
Time

Good of you to go through all the trouble to share this. Many thanks, Sir.

I envy you your mom, btw. :-)

For me, it's the audience reaction aspect of your recording that is the most enticing. I remember seeing Star Wars with an audience for the first time when the '97 special editions premiered. After seeing the films hundreds of times at home on video, I was surprised and delighted to hear the audience respond to stuff in the film I had never recognized as funny. (They got the jokes I had never got, basically. Ha ha.)

... and your tape will be in the safest of hands with Puggo.

Info: Droids and Ewoks, anybody ?

Yet another screenshot comparison from me. This time with Ted's NTSC MKV and my RAW PAL captures. NTSC on top, PAL on bottom.

As you can see, the NTSC MKV has brighter colours, and none of that ghosting that pervades the PAL masters.

Oh, the ghosting! The horror! The horror! PAL EPIC FAIL!

In these, you can see the ugly edges along R2s legs and in front of 3PO's mouth. They are there in both sources, they just show up better in Ted's brighter MKVs.

Ted, the edge fringing is excessive on this capture. The NTSC has three outlines along 3PO's hand, while the PAL has one (and some ghosting again). Did you add some horizontal sharpening, or was this in your source? Perhaps you can show us a before-and after of how you cleaned up the NTSC recordings?

Here the reds bloom a little, typical of NTSC. The PAL fares better in this respect. I would tone down the colours just a little bit on the NTSCs.

Thanks, Ted.

That did the trick.

The episode looks gorgeous, aside from some ghastly edge fringing that probably is part of the source. I'm very much looking forward to seeing all the episodes in this quality.

The sound was bright and clear, but with a slightly harsh quality, and a somewhat hollow, reverb-like character to it. Did you do much work on the sound, or is this just part of the original recordings? We've probably never heard them in this quality before, and it brings out the deficiencies in the original tracks.

Anyway, excuse my niggles. This is the best we've ever seen or heard Droids, and probably ever will. The community owes you and Pittrek big-time for doing all this work.

If you guys could take a look at them and offer any advice or criticism that would be good. To get out before I upload the entire series. Also any odd audio crackles or VHS defects I likely won't be going back and editing out. I barely have enough time as it is :P

Ted, these links aren't working for me. All I get is pop-up ads. Would you please consider uploading to Rapidshare, a site I'm more comfortable with?

Please?

Hi, everyone. It's been a long time. Anyway, I've been somewhere else *wink wink nudge nudge* and whenever Ted is ready I'm ready to send him clones of all the transfers I had someone make(for the PAL tapes). I don't know if you guys want any NTSC stuff I have, but you're all welcome to it.

(I did the NTSCs if anyone is wondering)

I felt bad that I didn't have anything to offer months ago and some false leads.

The expertise that Ted and the rest of you have humbles me.

Hi Dad.

Whatever you can contribute will always be appreciated by the community. The more we can give Ted to work with, he'll be able to sort out the best possible sources on his own.

I have made transfers of the PAL tapes myself, but the dreaded blended frames are an eyesore. It's a pity, because otherwise the PAL tapes have good colours and the details are better than the off-air recordings doing the rounds.

Anyway, there's always use for a second set of PAL captures to replace any damaged portions of either set. I know my set has quite a few instances of dropouts and streaking from tape damage.

Thanks for all you've already contributed.

Fritz

Hi Ted.

Glad to hear your wee one is doing fine. Our first born was slightly premature as well (5 weeks), so this brought back memories.

Good to hear you're still working on Droids. I favour MKVs as well, but what I really want are finished DVDs, ready to burn. I could author them myself from your MKVs, but I'd rather you make a specific DVD encode using the highest feasible bitrate.I don't necessarily want it fast, I want it good :-)

I was thinking I could make a custom cover for a complete DVD set, like I did for Ewoks seasons 1 and 2.

Joshua Ling ... Archivist/Collections Manager at Stephen J. Sansweet, Sound Technician at University of Southern California, Projectionist at USC - School of

Coincidence maybe, but Stephen Sansweet is head of Public Relations at Lucasfilm, I believe, and has been since the mid 90s. That makes it very likely that someone working for him would have access to the HS.

I guess Josh Ling is in trouble now...

... and here's what the shot looks like in my bootleg of a 35mm exhibition print from ca. 1981. (Click to view the full image.)

The pinkish sky certainly gives it a "dusk" vibe. I'm not claiming this is correct, but you can at least tell how much of the sky was exposed on film. To me it looks like this was shot on a somewhat overcast day.

(There also seems to be more image on the top compared to the official releases.)

Correct or not, I'm still going with OMEN's grading on this. The pale skintones and bright whites seem more appropriate to the storytelling.

Could someone on here maybe shed some light on the different versions I have? None, I'm looking at you :-)

What's the story behind the Zion Hybrid and the WMAR "Ruthless" edit?

The VCD capture is a little unfair, as it clears up after the first minute and looks okay after that. That VCD version was my first (1999, I believe), and it cost me an arm and a leg. Like SKot, I'd heard about this special for years, since 1983, actually. It was only with the advent of the internet and eBay I was able to first see it.

I have 8 9 (found another one) different Holiday Specials on my harddrive. Screengrabs from MPC.

I have no idea if they're identified correctly, but this is what they are called on my drive. Not even sure if they're different.

As far as I can tell, KCCI is the only version to have the complete first seconds.

"WMAR 2"

"KCMO TV5"

"KCCI from OCP"

"KCCI from ANGRYSUN"

"Zion Hybrid"

"RIFFTRAX DVD"

"WMAR Ruthless Edit"

"KMAR"

"VCD version" from eBay about ten years ago. No station identifier that I could find.

No problem, if you need more give me a shout. On another note would it be possible if you could rescan a high res of this please?

Here you go, at 600dpi.

Let me know when you have it and I'll take it down.

Would you mind removing the link to the image from your post? I'd rather avoid hotlinking to my server. Thanks.
