While I’ve washed my hands of the ST and all future SW films for the forseeable future, it’s hard for me to sympathize with these people. I’ll bet a sizable portion of them were the same smug, self-satisfied Lucas fanboys who mocked and heckled OOT purists just for wanting a proper restoration of the theatrical cuts. To that faction, I can only say: “Can you feel that, buddy‽”

Well one of these people is me and I want a OOT release, I liked the PT as a kid and still do with the right fan edit and I even liked TFA but I hate TLJ. So try categorising that 😉

“Non-standard non-purist”? 😛

Nice try 😛

If I’m after an OOT release though wouldnt that make me a purist?

I don’t doubt some of the signatories are the type of people you described but you can’t tar the entire group with the same brush as demonstrated above.

True. Still, I find the whole notion of creating a petition to strike a movie one doesn’t like from canon hopelessly immature and petulant. Now, I’m not a fan of official canon, and that’s been true since 2007; I don’t like most of the EU, I don’t like the SE or PT, and I don’t even like ROTJ. Yet never once did I entertain the notion of starting or signing a petition to get any of that decanonized; I’ve chucked out what I despise and replaced it with headcanon.

tl;dr: These people have to get over themselves and stop treating official canon as something which actually matters.

I think the petition creator realised this themselves, here are some of their updates for context:

Update 1

DEC 19, 2017 — Hey guys, I need to be honest here…

I put this petition up because I was upset and I was on strong pain medication. Last December I was in a vehicle accident and am still trying to get the surgery and such, it really messed up my knee and leg and put me in a wheelchair. If I sit up for a long time it really starts hurting.

So after spending the time to get to the movie, watch it, and get back I was in ridiculous pain. I was frustrated and medicated. So, I made this petition. It was a bad idea at the time and I feel that we are pooling our efforts in not a healthy direction.

While supporting this petition is important, and I too have a deep love for Star Wars, I recommend we maybe send this in a new direction. There are tons of people, and causes, who need help, and we are here for Star Wars.

I couldn’t get the help on GoFundMe to help pay for my surgery, and yet this gets this kind of attention? To the point that this petition has been in multiple news publications at this point? How many other people out there need help and can’t get attention?

I’m not comfortable with that…

I love all of the support, but we also know that Disney isn’t going to do anything, and with so many people, who have much better causes, who are struggling to gain attention it is a shame that this is getting this level of media attention.

So please, while we all love Star Wars, I urge every single supporter who signed this, to also take a few minutes to look at other petitions on Change.Org, ones that are important, or look at causes on GoFundMe. Places where we can make a difference that matters.

Thank you.

Update 2

DEC 20, 2017 — Oiy and vey this has been difficult…

Okay, it seems people mistook my last update and got an implied meaning that I never intended, so I am going to be as blunt and direct as possible.

I never slammed the supporters of this petition.

Contrary to what ComicBook.Com wrote (twice) first accusing this petition of being spoiler laden, and then second saying that I had reversed my position and slammed supporters.

Neither of those things happened. I still do not like this film. I only know that the petition, which was made in a moment of compromised common sense, can’t achieve the goal that was set for it. It was meant as a way to blow off steam, and in the grand scope of realism there is a 0% chance that Disney would strip TLJ from canon, and they absolutely won’t delay Episode IX to remake Episode VIII. That was a flight of fancy, and a sarcastic statement.

Do I think The Last Jedi is good? No. I feel that it doesn’t get characterizations correct. I feel that it was poorly written and that, intentionally or not, Rian Johnson insulted the hardcore fanbase repeatedly and made poor use of the assets he had available with regards to classic characters. Killing legendary characters off-screen then introducing new characters in roles that classic characters could have filled better and losing the emotional impact and weight those classic characters would have brought to the series. I feel that some of the decisions made hurt the franchise. I am still torn up about the ending.

I have not been, as some people accused, bought off by Disney. I wish I was bought off by Disney, I could use the money, but no I didn’t change my tune on the liking of this film. If you can please stop sending me threats I would greatly appreciate it.

What I did do, however, was urge you to all aim your signatures and donations into a better direction. That isn’t me saying you shouldn’t sign this petition to show Disney you’re annoyed at them. Please feel free to do so.

That being said, we have, at the time of me writing this, over 25,000 people in one place. We are all passionate about Star Wars. This is a tremendous amount of power that can be used for good. So yes, I still urge everyone coming here to sign petitions that are important, I urge them all to help people who are in need, because we are people and we are gathered, and it is the holidays, and that is just a decent thing to do.

This petition probably shouldn’t have hit this critical mass. Certainly not to the point that it has been featured in pretty much every news site out there. I shouldn’t be getting threats, and worse, over a petition, and I have been dealing with such all day.

So to clarify:

 1. No I don’t like The Last Jedi. I would actually love Disney to strip it from canon, I just know such a thing isn’t (and never was) a realistic goal.

 2. You should all help people, as we always should help people, because that is just a decent thing to do. My concern is that the popularity of this petition could pull the focus off of things that might be more important.

 3. You should not be throwing threats around at people. This was a way to blow off steam, I have said that from minute one, and show that people were displeased, but you shouldn’t be threatening people. That isn’t cool.

 4. To restate one last thing: “I am not slamming anyone who signed this.” I am passionate about Star Wars too. I didn’t like the Last Jedi. I was very upset at the film. I just don’t want people to have unrealistic ideas of what this petition can actually accomplish.

 5. I’m going to use this thing to do good… So each and every day I will use the ability to send out an update to direct people to worthy and good causes. Why? Because that is a decent thing to do.

Today I’m going to direct Star Wars fans to visit “A Force For Change”

https://forceforchange.starwars.com/

I’m not saying like the current film. I don’t. I’m not saying don’t sign this to show Disney you’re upset, by all means please do. I am saying that you can do that and still help people.

The Force Will Be With You, Always…

Update 3

DEC 21, 2017 — I have been asked to verify that I am who I say I am, because it may be that the Huffington Post would like to comment on this petition.

I have been in contact with Matthew Jacobs, and this was one of the few ways I could verify that he had the right person.

As always, sign if you want to sign, but please also take a few minutes of your day to help someone else. Thank you.

I reached out to them because people have been conflating this petition with a growing theory that all Star Wars fans who are displeased with the new film are members of the Alt-Right. We are, or at least I am, absolutely not.

The issues people with this petition have has nothing to do with race, gender, or creed of anyone and has nothing to do with real-world political affiliations. The majority of people in this petition are here because they feel that the legacy of Star Wars was mishandled and didn’t enjoy the film. Nothing more, or less.

My feelings are well known. I just didn’t want anyone who did sign this being caught in a very negative narrative, nor did I want anything I am a part of to be associated in the least bit, with the Alt-Right. This is about the characters of Star Wars.

As I have stated, this petition started as a way to blow off steam, but regardless of that, I didn’t want to risk that kind of an association.

Thank you and remember. Please take the time out of your day to help someone else.

I also want to thank the petitioners who have signed this as well. You are all passionate Star Wars fans. Though initially there were some really aggressive posts (I received more than a fair share of those) in the last day or so, this has become a pretty positive group. I am very thankful for that.

That’s actually true. I think the petition is bs, but what happened to respecting the minorities? If it was the PT people would be fine with it. In fact when it was the PT people here were more than fine with it.

Recently there was a comment in this very thread where someone said we shouldn’t treat PT fans like people. I found that to be very rude and possibly ban worthy. I used to be a PT fan myself when I was younger and several little kids I know are PT fans.

I’d most certainly ridicule a petition that tried to do the same thing for the PT. The concept is just plain dumb as shit. These people need to grow up.

So while we’re at it, how about we stop treating people who like the ST like people? Or stop treating people that like MARVEL movies like people? Or how about stop treating someone with a certain sexuality like people because they are attracted to X instead of the majority’s Y?

I hope I don’t get banned for this, but come on.

Making “people who don’t like Disney SW movies” out to be a minority on par with people with different sexual orientations is… misguided, to say the least.

Point completely missed…

Can’t see anything wrong with that post mate.

Also regarding the petition, even the creator himself acknowledges he created it in the heat of the moment while dealing with some heavy personal shit, that given a few days to cool off he wouldn’t have made it and that he doesn’t expect it to accomplish what it states it wants to achieve but he decided to leave it up since it got such a strong reaction and was becoming a rallying point for people to simply voice their displeasure at what RJ and Disney did with TLJ.

It has made it into a number of news articles which usually report on it wrongly but nevertheless it has been noticed out in the wider world and hopefully by Disney so they at least know there is a subset of fans that really abhor the choices made with TLJ.

I don’t believe at this stage that it’s going to have any impact on Disney, only time will tell if further major drop off with Ep9 and reduced merchandise and home release sales actually happen and then what effect that is seen to cause. Merchandise figures are already well down, whether that’s a result of the movies themselves or something else isn’t really known but it will be interesting to see how the home release sales go.

As it requires no great sacrifice or personal inconvenience on their part, it kind of cheapens the concept of a boycott. Let’s see them deny their kids a trip to the parks or buying other Disney product.

Sorry but I don’t understand what personal sacrifice or inconvenience has to do with a boycott? The point is to get a message across by voting with your wallet, if anything the boycotters are better off from saving money and not having to sit through more movies they are fairly certain they are not going to enjoy anyway.

Why else would we boycott the movies other than we really do not care to watch any more Disney SW movies due to our experience with TLJ and the direction we can now see that the movies are heading in? At that you could almost say that it’s not a boycott and that Disney have simply lost part of their fan base which if they aren’t fans anymore of the new movies, they’re not going to see the movies or buy the home releases anyway. What makes it a boycott is that these people love their SW and still hope to see change to a certain extent in how these movies are being made as a result of hitting Disney where it actually hurts them. If this changes actually happens then they’ll get back the patronage of the boycotters.

Regarding kids, I certainly reserve the right to decide what my kids will watch and what I buy for them. Once they are old enough I’ll have no problem if they want to watch the ST and spend their own money on merchandise and we can have interesting conversations on the matter, that’s if they even like SW for that matter 😉 I’ll be bringing them up on a healthy dose of OT for sure but you never know if they’ll keep liking it as adults.

Edit: forgot to reply on your comment about kids

Petition is now at 100k signatures. Below is the petition description:

https://www.change.org/p/the-walt-disney-company-have-disney-strike-star-wars-episode-viii-from-the-official-canon

Star Wars has long been a story about two things, the Jedi and Luke Skywalker. After over 260 novels where we could follow the adventures of that great hero you, the Walt Disney Company decided to strike all of that from the official canon and wiped out three decades of lore. We were excited to see Episode VII to see how our heroes lives turned out since you took away what we knew. We saw the death of Han Solo, we saw less than a minute of Luke Skywalker.

Episode VIII was a travesty. It completely destroyed the legacy of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi. It destroyed the very reasons most of us, as fans, liked Star Wars. This can be fixed. Just as you wiped out 30 years of stories, we ask you to wipe out one more, the Last Jedi. Remove it from canon, push back Episode IX and re-make Episode VIII properly to redeem Luke Skywalker’s legacy, integrity, and character.

We stuck by you when you did things that hurt us before, so we ask you now, please don’t let this film stand. Don’t do this to us. Don’t take something so many of us loved so much and destroy it like this. Let us keep our heroes.

While obviously this will never happen and if it were to happen it would be completely unfair to those that liked the movie, I can’t fault what he says and I wasn’t even into the EU myself.

Found a YouTube video reviewing the *** versions of NJVC’s blurays, there’s been one comment so far trying to set him right (that’s these are supposed to be obtained freely and he’s being scammed) but one only.

We should all get on and post a comment each telling him the same thing, that he is actively helping to advertise a scam and that he needs to make a retraction edit to this video or a follow up video explaining the issues with what he bought and reviewed:

Mark Hamill's star joins the Hollywood Walk Of Fame
Time

Collipso said:

So I just watched it all the way through, and… I wasn’t the hugest fan of the ceremony. It felt like they were giving Star Wars the star, not Mark. I didn’t like neither George’s nor Harrison’s speeches. Then again, George only worked directly with Mark once (yes I know he was on set for TESB and RotJ, and almost co-directed RotJ, but still) and even though it was the most important movie of his career, it was just one movie. It’s not as if George had all that many amazing memories and stories about Mark - he talked about some things he remembered from 40 years ago, and you couldn’t expect more from him. Harrison too, and Harrison is known for not being the best speaker in the world.

So while I do think that Harrison and George had to be there, I think they should’ve balanced it by bringing in some people from his Batman career, like Kevin Conroy, for example. They’ve been working together for almost 30 years now, and I think he’d have had more to say about Mark than the 2 Star Wars guys that spoke. Maybe Paul Dini, too, since he ended up writing some of the best Batman stories that Mark played the Joker.

Mark deserved it. I’m so happy for him. It was about goddamn time. But I did not like the ceremony itself. And, of course, I miss Carrie.

I’ve watched the entire thing as well and didn’t really have any issue with anything particularly (apart from the media at the end “MARK! MARK! MR HAMILL! THIS WAY! LOOK CENTRE! PUT YOUR ARMS UP! PUT YOUR ARMS UP!” - Like shut the fuck up and let the man enjoy his moment) as I don’t know how the ceremonies for this generally go or what to expect.

I agree that Lucas’s speech was rather awkward, maybe unabashedly out of touch at times at what is probably considered appropriate in that position and it finished so abruptly you could even see Lucas realised after a second as he started to walk away and half raised a delayed goodbye wave LOL. But from any footage I’ve ever seen of Lucas and also reading his biography book “A Life”, to me this is just how Lucas is and didn’t really expect anything different than what Mark got out of him.

Regarding Ford, I feel the opposite in that it was a very sincere and heart felt speech. Similarly with having seen various videos of Ford over the years on different shows and especially in recent years with TFA, he seemed to always be wearing a tolerating “just gotta put up with this shit” face and putting up a facade with his answers to questions, half the time as jokes where I didn’t see any of that here. He’s always seemed a man of few words and I feel the few he used in this case were loaded with thoughtfulness and sincerity in choosing the words he used, loaded with a lot of hidden meaning that only Mark and maybe a few others would ever fully understand. If he is known for not being a great speaker then I think this adds extra weight to what I thought was a good speech all things considered.

They definitely could have had some more people there from his Batman voice acting career though I’m sure it’s not that widely known about compared to his role in Star Wars nor what initially shot him to the spotlight and is probably why the ceremony focused mostly on Star Wars.

But yeah either way, really happy for the bloke and think he thoroughly deserves this recognition.

Edit: Also did no one else find Mark’s TFA joke funny as hell? XD

What I understand from a friend is that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce select around 25 people a year and these 25 are supposedly ‘nominated’ usually by publicists or wealthy friends. Then if they want to go ahead with the star they are personally charged $30k.

So it could be he hasn’t been nominated till now or was earlier in life but wasn’t interested at the time in coughing up $30k for essentially a tile with his name on it 😛

So I don’t know how there isn’t a thread for this yet, but it seems as of 2 days ago Mark Hamill has been recognised for his life’s work with his own star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

George Lucas and Harrison Ford both make speeches and Mark’s own speech is a crack up from a golden joke about being speechless to finishing with a laugh from the Joker himself 😉

The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released)
Time

While I don’t think a fanedit is ever going to fix this movie for me, I thought I’d still try to help with what sounds like a decent and interesting edit.

My idea is in relation to your goal of removing much of the odd humour that either doesn’t work or is at odds with the tone and emotion of the scene it appears in such as when Luke nochantly tosses his old lightsaber (also his Dad’s old lightsaber) over his shoulder. I can’t remember clearly but do we then see it landing on the ground?

I’m thinking that scene could be edited so that we see Rey hand it to him and he stares back while holding it, a thousand emotions running across his face and then it cuts to simply seeing the lightsaber hit the ground, indicating he’s dropped it / fallen from his grip as he battles with the memories of the last time he held it - fighting Vader with his father’s own lightsaber only to lose the fight, his hand and then come to release Vader is his father and then jumping to his assumed certain death. The scene would pause for a second or two showing the dropped saber resting on the ground and then cut to show him stalking away, obviously overwhelmed.

This is something I expected of TLJ and to have him throw it over his shoulder like it meant nothing and as a joke for the audience was quite offensive really and completely disrespectful on many levels.

Whether just to remove the tone defeating humour or for those additional above reasons, it would be great to see that part edited so. I also can’t remember, but is the scene in TLJ where Rey hands him the lightsaber and he stares back, the exact same footage from TFA? Or did they reshoot it? If reshot, would it be worth replacing TLJ version with footage straight from TFA? That way you get the overcast lighting and Luke’s emotions as portrayed in TFA rather than Rian’s retconned version of the scene.

Another one I can think of which is not only tone defeating but out of character is when Luke brushes of his shoulder after withstanding the barrage of walker fire. It is again only for the audience to laugh at and diminishes the gravity of what is happening in that moment and the battle itself.

Good luck with your edit.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

sonofjones said:

I’m not sure if anyone’s already suggested this (I haven’t exactly been reading this forum regularly), but here’s an idea I have: Anakin’s death feels kind of out of place in the tail end of the Battle of Endor. It’s an emotional, quiet scene, but as soon as it’s done we jump right back into high paced excitement and heroic triumph. The two tones clash and it always felt a bit jarring to me.

So what if instead it were made so Anakin died on the shuttle after it had already escaped the Death Star? Then we transition back to Han and Leia on Endor and any celebration there that might happen, then have the ending Adywan described (Luke burning his father’s body alone as the Jedi ghosts look on).

I can see how you may feel that way, never had an issue with it myself though and I think it’s because you see this kind of thing happening in normal life anyway - small sad moments that mean a lot to the individual but they don’t halt the entire world which could be rejoicing something amazing at that very same moment. I think there’s a number of other things to also consider:

 • the urgency of the scene (to get off the DS before it explodes) helps in understanding why it doesn’t linger and go on for to long.

 • the rest of the galaxy doesn’t know and is rightfully celebrating the downfall of the Empire (or if you watch the ST, a minor set back at that…)

 • they can’t focus too much on the sadness of Luke losing his father in face of the fact he was the biggest and evilest villain in the galaxy that has killed untold number of people (billions if just going by his involvement with destroying Alderan) and the story has been building up to his defeat over 3 movies which the audience are supposed to cheer at along with the galaxy, while also feeling sad for Luke.

I find also that much like with Alderan’s destruction and probably other examples throughout the movies, they don’t deliver all the emotion of one event in one scene. They space it out a bit to give you time to process what has happened and then later on hit you harder with the emotional side of things. For Alderan, it was Obiwan later falling into a chair on the Falcon and relaying his sense of horror and loss of what he was suddenly feeling through the force. For Vader/Anakin’s death, it is the funeral pyre scene as Luke lights it and the music swells, seriously one of the scenes that always makes the eyes get a bit misty (got the chills watching it again just now on Youtube) which then pans up to show the celebrations still going on elsewhere which we are then returned to and see all the main characters joyfully reuniting, Luke somewhat bitter-sweetly. This is in order to bring the audience themselves back into a feeling of jubilance and positivity to end the movie on.

All that aside, while the idea makes sense to an extent it is also changing the story and removing a pretty important if not pivotal scene from the movie. Unless you meant to keep it and make it seem somehow they are on Endor as Luke removes Vader’s helmet on the shuttle’s rear ramp? I’m hoping Ady doesn’t do that or his idea for ending on the funeral pyre with the force ghosts looking on, it just changes to much of the ending that I’ve always loved. Plus I don’t understand how having the force ghosts standing there smiling at each other is appropriate for this idea - turn those “non-frowns” upside down? 😛

Val

Edit: Below is the clip I refer to and to explain my feelings on the ending of ROTJ - Lucas swapping in Hayden’s head and changing the music from Yub Nub is one of the, if not THE changes to the OT that I hated the most and changed forever the way I viewed Lucas, as it fucked with an ending I fondly remembered, had loved watching for many years and never thought anything was wrong with it or the way it left me feeling at the culmination of 3 movies telling a saga that I grew up with.

I really don’t see how being influenced by a dozen old movies is in any way comparable to blantantly recycling story elements, structure, and visuals from the same movie series.

It’s not, nor was I addressing that issue. I was responding specifically to Collipso saying “Neither Star Wars nor Empire ripped off any movie whatsoever”. In fact, it ripped off several films. For the record; I’m not bothered by that. Not now, not in 1977.

Regarding your claim that TFA recycled elements from the OT; I can’t imagine there is anyone on here who doesn’t see that to be the case. There are all sorts of parallels between the OT and the ST. The differences seem to be more about the level at which people are bothered by them.

I would be fine if that were the case, but I don’t believe it is. Some posters here conflate recycling Star Wars tropes with being influenced by other film makers, and works of fiction, thus arguing in a sense, that the current creators are more or less doing what Lucas did in 1977. Lucas’ Star Wars wasn’t original in their view, because he was obviously influenced by many sources while making the first film, and it’s sequels. The current creators are doing the same thing, theu argue, but they just happened to be influenced by Star Wars movies. My argument is Lucas didn’t invent the ingredients, but he did invent a new and original recipe, and one that has resulted in some very tasty meals, while the current creators deliberately used Lucas’ recipe and added a few twists to disguise the fact that they couldn’t come up with a new recipe. The meal might still be edible, but it’s just so similar to Lucas’ recipe, that I can’t shake the notion, that I’ve tasted far better versions of it in the past.

Brilliant.
