General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread

The VP of my dept at work decorates his office every year with Yoda Christmas lights. He’s a huge Star Wars nerd and collects all sorts of nice memorabilia and artwork. I’ve mentioned him and the Yoda Christmas lights before but I don’t remember ever taking a picture of them. This is from earlier today. One of the managers in our dept has a Lego Star Wars Christmas advent calendar. (No pics)

Brilliant 😃

I love this kind of stuff, and it still puts a smile on the face!

Reasoning Behind Changes from Release to Release

Still no reasons from George, Lucasfilm, ILM, or Disney yet?

I suppose the ‘it was always meant to be this way’ or ‘this is the real finished version - not that one which has stood for 20 years’ only works so many times? 😉

There have been no official explanations of any changes since the old “What Has Changed” articles in 2006.

Hell, they made #maclunkey show a Greedo emoji, but no one has explained what it even means.

Have you received any other responses or information from Lucasfilm (or their employees) after this happened?:

https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp/status/1202581565823475712

or why they claimed the Disney+ versions were from the blu-ray releases?

Yeah, we know. We’ve discussed it all already. Shogun Assassin is just a film compiled from parts of the first two Lone Wolf and Cub films, edited together for American theatrical release. Magnificent Seven is just “reused material” (to quote you) from Seven Samurai set in the American West rather than Feudal Japan.

Did you know Star Wars (1977) is just a bunch of standard hero and myth tropes jumbled together with a bit of fantasy, western, and samurai genres all blended together? Did you know Fistful of Dollars is just a spaghetti western remake of Yojimbo? Things reuse ideas from previous things. Omg! There’s a reason the word “tropes” exits…

The issue is, how well does THIS media execute those ideas? I thought episode 5 was possibly the weakest so far. I still liked it, but it definitely had some issues with the casting and maybe the directing imo. I still think episode 2 and 3 were the high point so far but this is still a very fun series! I’m sad we’ve got only, what, two more to go this season?

I didn’t know about this Yojimbo film, but I guess for a good reason.

If you reuse something you should make it better, as all of those pictures you mentioned here did.

What makes you think that’s true? If you’ve never, by your own admission, even heard of them? Because I assure you it is not.

I literally said I did not hear about Yojimbo.
It means I heard about all the others.
What the hell you smokin?
Own admission?
Can you even read properly?

You say the Magnificent seven is not better then the Seven Samurai?
That Star Wars is not better then the Hidden Fortress?
Wow. Ok. Good bye.

Don’t forget your ‘case’, and to also cancel your subscription to Disney+ yet again 😉

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *

Ugh - Jason Ward, MSW and the supposed leaks… 😃

‘Star Wars: Colin Trevorrow Debunks Alleged Rey Origin Story in Rise of Skywalker’:-

https://comicbook.com/starwars/2019/12/05/star-wars-rise-skywalker-spoilers-rey-origin-story-debunked-colin-trevorrow

I remember Jason Ward from the MF.com way back - If I remember correctly he got found out pretending to be a female fan in a bid try and lure gullible male fans to his site? (or did get one of his wives to do it for him? I can’t remember!)

He would gladly bash on Star Wars fans (“I hate them with a passion”) and attempt to start feuds with other sites to stir up drama and get clicks and people to visit his site. Was this place one? Or with a few people connected on here back then?

Jedit - From MF.com: http://millenniumfalcon.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=2015&t=9605

Now it appears he may be getting desperate and trying to get as many hits and revenues as he can before TROS comes out in a couple of weeks and his traffic dwindles - even contradicting himself from day to day in his new articles and ‘leaks’, according to some.

I’m quite surprised some members on here have taken him at his word. Sure, he may have obtained or got sent the leaks from the trailers and tv spots some time ago, and filled in some gaps from the books and obvious story links… but anything else? Clickbait. A Supershadow type for the modern internet - for me, anyway.

Please delete or edit if I have gone a little too far mods 😃

“political dissidents”?

We must save them from their oppresive masters and restore their freedom!

Oh, you mean the guy who told the site owner to go kill himself?

The other who bitched at the site owner repeatedly over considerable time - still bitches about this place and the community here in general on FE (the moderators on there remove his posts - to keep the peace?)

And the other, a bully who never believed he was wrong in spreading drama and shit all over the forums, derailing threads, and acted like he owned the place? All those requests and warnings must have been for someone else?

You mean those “political dissidents”?

They are not “political dissisents” - they are people who acted like entitled idiots and got what they deserved.

At least the young kid admits it was right he was banned for his part and shows some maturity and responsibility.

Sorry for derailing the thread further, mods. It had to be said. Am sure others disagree - and will continue to harp on about this for years to come. Oh the inhumanity of it all!

Sorry if I’ve not been up with recent discussions, but what was broken about Holdo’s hair being purple?

Nothing mate.

Though some may want to tackle it as a technical challenge / exercise (apparently it is quite a difficult, labour-intensive task to to do - and get right).

Others don’t like the Holdo character and wish to make changes to her.

An aesthetic choice - some seemingly don’t like (through to some not being able to stand) people having purple hair in their Star Wars space opera / fantasy films.

A few have problems that the purple hair meant that the Holdo character was a lesbian; an oft-mentioned comment when making racist, sexist, homophobic or other derogatory comments on other female characters in the Sequels too.

I like to think most on here doing this change for Edits see it as an aesthetic choice or a technical exercise / challenge…

I think it’s really dishonest to reduce anyone who doesn’t like The Last Jedi to a bunch of politically motivated epithets like “racist,” “sexist,” “homophobic,” etc.

I suggest you read my post again - because I am not sure how you claim to that conclusion based on what I wrote.

“A few have problems that the purple hair meant that the Holdo character was a lesbian; an oft-mentioned comment when making racist, sexist, homophobic or other derogatory comments on other female characters in the Sequels too.”

You said “a few,” but you also said, “oft-mentioned,” and I have zero trust in you or others like you to make the distinction. You’ve defended Johnson for his fan bashing several times. “Oh no, he just doesn’t like the bad ones.” That’s nonsense. It’s essentially a political divide, and I think it’s fine to acknowledge that openly.

“Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.”

ooJason has posted articles on here highlighting the fact that Rian Johnson has indeed called out the toxic fans - sexists, racists, homophobes and people who issue death threats etc; and that Rian Johnson has no problem with fans simply voicing their dislike of the movie.

Rian Johnson is on record saying exactly this - he has no problem with fans who simply don’t like the movie.

You continue to deny this, and accuse others with present any facts yourself, and also conintue to derail the thread with comments you have been repeatedly told are more suited to other more apt formus of the site. And you continue further!

Seems ooJason somehow triggered you when you said “I think it’s really dishonest to reduce anyone who doesn’t like The Last Jedi to a bunch of politically motivated epithets like “racist,” “sexist,” “homophobic,” etc.” - which you know full well what he was not referring to that.

Going on your post history here I can see why you did try to claim it given your attitude to women in film. Yet when you make up quotes, continue to derail this thread, ignore moderator requests to stop, and try bullshit your way with accusations on others, taking their posts way of context, attack others in here… it only refelcts poorly on yourself. And also others who may agree with you.

Like many of your kind, you are a coward. A sexist who hides behind feeble excuses, and will say anything to continue your transparent agenda here.

Man, I don’t like the purple hair or the Holdo character that much - and am glad the fan editors here are coming up with many choices for fans to watch different versions of many films here - but I am more glad to be nothing like you. You are toxic about it.

I hope more people call you out on your actions here. This place is one of the least toxic places online and that is why I love it. I’d hate it to become like other places filled with toxic views and people like you. You’ve already tried to ruin this thread.

Sorry mods. Rant over.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | “Duel” TV Spot

Not gonna lie… hearing Duel of the Fates gave me goosies right away.

I enjoyed watching that - though it seems Palpatine’s lines may have been recorded for trailer (or other promos) - and not from the actual film itself?

I am probably wrong - it just seemed a little ‘off’ (and it is just a short tv spot afterall).

Doctor Who

In case anyone missed this:

The Daleks are back! In black and white, and on YouTube! The metal monsters are once again menacing secret service agents from Earth on the planet Kembel, in a recreation of a Doctor Who adventure not seen since 1965.

Using the original script, replica props, vintage TV methods and the contemporary voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs, the missing episode Mission to the Unknown has been remade by film and media students at the University of Central Lancashire. The recreation premiered on the official BBC Doctor Who YouTube channel at 5:50pm on 9 October, exactly 54 years after the story was broadcast for the one and only time.

It is unique in the original Doctor Who series for being the only episode not to feature the Tardis, Doctor or any of his companions. Instead, it was a standalone story starring arch-enemies the Daleks, which acted as a prequel to a later 12-part adventure The Daleks’ Master Plan (and quite possibly, in the mind of Dalek creator Terry Nation, as a pilot for a Dalek spinoff series that never materialised.)

Would a Dalek spinoff have worked in 1965? On this evidence, yes.

The episode sets up a galactic war between humans and Daleks, and an undercover security force sent from Earth to thwart them. It introduces an alliance of alien races, who are determined to invade the solar system alongside the Daleks. You can easily imagine a multitude of further stories set in this universe.

It is probably the only Doctor Who episode that could be completely remade convincingly in this way. The lack of regular cast involvement means there’s nobody trying to imitate William Hartnell as the Doctor, and the characters of Marc Cory and Gordon Lowery (played by Marco Simioni and Dan Gilligan) get to establish themselves on their own basis over the 25 minutes.

Inevitably, given the source material, it is a bit stilted, stagey and even slapstick at points. But the recreation of the Daleks, and the way they are shot in stark black-and-white, is effective. The Kembel jungle and the dangerous Varga plants look comparable to 60s Doctor Who sets, and the Dalek death ray effect is true to the source. The storyline is quite slight, though, making this an interesting curiosity rather than a ‘must see’.

It says something about the mythical status of the missing Doctor Who episodes that what is essentially a student project has ended up getting a run-out on the BBC’s official YouTube channel.

There are still 97 episodes of 60s Doctor Who missing. They occasionally turn up, most recently in October 2013. However, Mission to the Unknown was never sold overseas, meaning there is virtually zero chance of it ever being found.

The production took five days in February 2019, and former Blue Peter presenter Peter Purves, who played the Doctor’s companion Steven in 1965, visited the set, saying: “This is an absolutely wonderful project. I can remember at the time that Bill Hartnell and I were a bit miffed not to be included in any way at all … but it was a nice week off in the end!”

I thought this was a good place for us Whovians to find this quality project too - I hope theis is okay and the mods don’t mind?
