According to the "Schnittbericht" the blood was originally shot, and only digitally erased for the theatrical cut. So I assume most of the time it's the original versions of the shots.

I've been noodling with the two versions, seeing if I can be bothered merging them, and the unrated cut really is a hodge-podge of originally shot stuff coupled with new CG tinkery.

For instance, when Mai kills the technician on duty at the power plant, the shot of him slumped in his chair was shot with blood on him, and CG'd for the PG-13. (They erased the blood on his forehead and coat, and for some odd reason, moved his ear slightly.) A moment later, Mai wipes blood off the console, which is obviously shot live. But then in the very next shot, when she opens the case, the consoles are clean, but have had blood composited into the shot. It's almost as though they shot for coverage, but misplaced the 'bloody' take of the case opening.

Same with the swearing. Some of it seems to be putting back what was supposed to be there, but most of it is looped after the fact, especially McClane's line as he prepares to jump from the speeding squad car, and his "Fuck being a hero" when driving to West Virginia. The 'hero' looping is also terrible because they've had to trim a shot of McClane very short to hide the fact that his mouth wasn't moving. So it cuts from Matt, to McClane's profile for a microsecond, then right to a C.U. on McClane's face.

I almost wanna edit it just to see if I can straighten it all out.

Cheers for the link. I think the ran out of bullets line is the only thing I'd bother keeping from the PG version. Everything else seems pretty dispensible to me.

Any chance of a few examples of what to look for in the alternate cut?

The first thing I checked was the scene just after the power plant explosion, and much to my dismay, Justin Long's rant is the same badly sliced up scene it was before. Half the shots of him do not match the dialog comin' out of his mouth.

But I'd be grateful for any pointers on scenes I can compare. (I only saw the PG version once, so I don't remember it vividly.)

I've been away for just a little while, and it gives me a sick feeling in my stomach to hear that Laserman is still 'away sick'.

I really hope everything turns out all right for him, he's a very nice guy who was far kinder and more generous with his time and property than I ever expected anyone to be. (Especially to a nobody on these forums like me.)

Get well soon, Laserman. All other priorities rescinded.

Info Wanted: Has anyone edited AvP?
Time
I've made more changes than I can be bothered counting, but my main focus has been:

1. Removed all references to Sebastian's idiotic "metric time" watch.
2. Re-ordered events to lengthen the Aliens' gestation time as much as is possible. (Not much to work with, but you do what you can. )
3. Dropped as many of the cringe-worthy lines as possible. I've needed to retain one or two to help with flow, but most have come out without fuss.
4. Take out a lot of jibber-jabber. The characters don't seem to be able to not talk for more than ten seconds, so I've removed a fair bit of non-essential small talk.
5. Altered all Predator-vision shots to be more like the first two Pred films. I did not dig Anderson's Tang-vision.
6. Added the Predator's triple heartbeat to all P.O.V. shots.
7. Re-edited the main fight between 'Scar' and 'Grid' Not a whole lot better, but re-ordered it and removed a bunch of shots that I personally hated.
8. Altered the colour-timing on the whole flick. Those muted grey shadows that turned up a lot gave me the shits.
9. Ummm...[thinking, thinking...]

That's the main stuff I can remember. There's tweaks in every scene of the film, but a lot of it will probably go unnoticed. I'll be doing a detailed list of alterations once the cut is locked.

The original "V" got released theatrically away from the Yanks, too.

are you sure about that, I live in France, and it was only broadcasted. Do you know which territories had V in theaters ?

I may have been mistaken on that front. I went back and checked the email I (mis)remembered it from...

Kenny Johnson said:

"My mini-series of V, shot six years earlier, was framed and shot in 1.85 to 1 ratio because we expected a foreign theatrical release. On the V DVD it is presented in that correct 1.85 format -- and looks very good."

So, they were expecting one, but I have no idea if they actually got one anywhere. Sorry about that.
