If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

Oh yeah. The space combat is far superior to EaW. EaW isn't "true 3D" in the sense that different ships are more or less relegated to different "levels" in the plain. I can't help it in that I have a huge thing for Imperial starships, but I also like a challenge, so I would rarely just go up against some mis-matched, tiny fleet unless I wanted to have some guilty fun.

EaW's difficulty is also not all that hot. I play games on the hardest difficulty available these days because everything else isn't much of a challenge anymore (though I find that "hard" usually means "you do less damage and enemies do more, also there are more enemies" which isn't "hard" so much as annoying and lame, but this is a different rant =P), EaW for the Empire becomes way too easy once you get the Executor and about four Star Destroyers in a fleet; after that you will likely never lose another ship and will basically roflstomp anything (including their hero units) with the audacity to stand in your way. You'll have to resort to using an interdiction cruiser in order to keep them from hiding on the other side of the map until they can jump out of the system, which is kinda lame...

I enjoyed EaW a lot, but I was already spoiled by Warlords' space combat by the time I got a hold of it.

Warlords is really incredible. Having played Homeworld II, it really is a total conversion indeed, because only rudimentary things from Homeworld are the same. Warlords is also more of a "sim" in that attributes are what they are from canon material and are not balanced and better ships are just better ships. That said, I wouldn't say any one side has an advantage or disadvantage (except the pirate or independent faction, whichever it's named, obviously they don't have access to crazy military technology [though they did get a bit of a boost when they put in some of the ships from the EaW expansion]), because I've had my Imperial fleets pretty well dismantled by certain Rebel ships. Of course, if you have the patience and resources to build some of the super-class ships, things get all kinds of crazy.

There are also some interesting non-canon ships in there as well, and I believe you can restrict the construction to certain timelines, too, which is cool.

Anyway... if you get a chance to try it out sometime, you really should. It's one of the best mods I've ever played.

The Warlords mod for Homeworld II is amazing fun. Really it's the best Star Wars RTS I've ever played.

I'm not sure what the support for it is like anymore, since it's been years since I played it last, and I know there was work happening on a Sins of a Solar Empire mod going on by the same guy (more or less a "port" of Warlords), but man; the level of detail on the ships was amazing. From the Executor down to the TIE fighters, everything was spot on. You could just follow one little TIE around as it engaged in dogfights with X-Wings, or you could zoom way out and watch your ISDs pound the pulp out of some Rebels on a true three-dimensional plane. Truly an amazing experience.

Here are a few screenshots I had laying around that I took for background purposes. I realize now that it kind of shows the fleets you were talking about not liking, but they're pretty damn awesome (not to mention the AI Rebels would always give me a run for my money).
