4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

10 years after Star Wars, the film Witches of Eastwick was released. What do those two have in common? Musical scores by John Williams. Believe it or not, Cher was the star of that film, which, of course, makes her the most obvious candidate to do a review of the original Star Wars in its unaltered form before its 4K UHD HDR 3D Blu-ray Digital VR release.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. But wouldn’t Cher be under an NDA? Well no, because REMEMBER she won an Oscar in 88 for Moonstruck, and, after last Sunday’s Best Picture kerfuffle with Moonlight, the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse Coopers, being in some deep shit, nullified all legal contracts. WHICH MEANS Cher’s NDA is up, but, she still needs to save face with Lucasfilm OBVIOUSLY because of her upcoming Sy Snootles anthology film (keep up, won’t you?).

So then how do we know all of this? HELLO of course she still wants fans to know what’s up, so she’s been sending coded signals for months via her Twitter account.

Just look at this tweet from February 2 (https://twitter.com/cher/status/827226043467456513):

FYI ARENA IS AMAZING.SO 🌬❄️
Rehearsed on Stage,Sang,Danced. I’m still Somewhat of a clod. New opening costume…You’ll need smelling salts 🤣

Okay let’s break this down. So we all know that “Arena” is referring to Season 1 Episode 18 of the original Star Trek. That’s not a coincidence. Notice how the word “original” is very similar to the word “original” in “original trilogy,” or how the word “Star” is very similar to the word “star” in “Star Wars.” Fascinating, right? She then says “Rehearsed on Stage,Sang,Danced.” I don’t know what that means. But THEN she says “I’m still Somewhat of a clod.” the word “still” meaning the same - as in same as in the 70s - and notice the capitalized “S” as in the capitalized “S” in “SE” which stands for “Special Edition”! The rest of the tweet of course refers to the new packaging and smellovision feature.

Now, stick with me here, because this one’s a doozy. On March 4, she tweeted this (https://twitter.com/cher/status/838273936848670720):

WATCHING 1ST STAR WARS IN THEATRE.SPECIAL EFFECTS OLD,BUT ❤️IT.REMINDS ME OF 1st TIME. HANS,CHEWY,LUKE,OLD BEN,
👑LEIA,DARTH VADER,HYPERSPACE

Don’t let the caps lock distract you, she specifically mentions the words “watching” and “old.” Put these two words together - “watching old.” Watching old what Cher? Could it be an old movie? Could it maybe even be gasp Star Wars?

I guess we’ll all find out when she shows up at Celebration.

For a while the good memories will hurt more than the bad ones. It’s okay to push them aside for now. The pain will probably last longer than you’d wish but it will pass eventually. It’s at that point that you’ll be able to be grateful for those good memories. Again, it’s okay to hate them now, but things won’t always be so bad. Time and distance is a good healer.

Yup. Even the deep cuts scar over.

I never thought it would happen to me, but hey, it did.

I think it’s funny how Kevin Kiner keeps ripping on JW’s other work. In the past we’ve gotten plays on themes from Raiders, Jaws, E.T., and probably a couple more I missed/forgot. This week there was some Jurassic Park.

I don’t really mind it.

Yeah, I kinda love it honestly.

Hera’s line about not moving was lifted right out of… one of those Jurassic Park movies, too.

Everyone who is registered as a Democrat went to polls and voted for which Democrat they wanted to represent the Democratic party in the General Election.

Out west, things get murkier. At least in my state, you don’t register as a member of a particular party at all, so technically everyone in the state is an independent. At primary time, you basically decide right on the spot which party’s primary you’d like to influence this year and choose that ballot (or attend that caucus, or both because yes we’re weird that way). It’s not quite an open primary, but we love open primaries out here and it’s the closest we can get to that ideal without the parties suing the crap out of the state. The parties claim they can restrict primary access to their own members; the public reminds the parties who’s paying for these elections in the first place, and a tense standoff is maintained.

Now some of that independence is obviously fictional. We have more self-reported independents (as opposed to the meaningless registration numbers) than most states, but lots of those are leftists who are choosing between third parties and Democrats, and rightists choosing between third parties and Republicans. The percentage actually choosing between Democrats and Republicans probably isn’t that different than other states, although we do have a lot of ticket-splitters, and we were one of the last refuges of the fabled liberal Republicans before they went extinct (or more accurately became Democrats).

We also have a long history of messing with the primaries of other parties. Since the primaries are occasionally just formalities with a single plausible candidate, and you can choose at the last minute which primary to vote in, people often talk about crossing over to the other side to vote for the weakest/craziest candidate on the other side, to improve their own party’s chances. However, that sort of talk has lately fallen out of fashion since it makes the situation a lot more dire when your party loses. Now people talk about crossing over to vote for someone they could stomach, if not vote for, which I guess is moderation coming back into fashion.

I’m registered independent in MA and it’s the similar for me, pick which ballot you want when you show up. Haven’t done the “vote on the other side” thing though.

Ditto in Arizona. Registered Independent and can choose which primary to vote in.

A bit late to the party, but the kicking off of the What If arc is the best episode of AoS so far in my opinion. I have so many questions and I’m super jazzed to see where they take it. Fantastic quality.

Spoilers

But if I have to sit through ANOTHER DAMN SEASON OF GRANT WARD I WILL SCREAM.

Not sure about best, but definitely up there. I’d have to rewatch that episode from last(?) season that’s all about Jemma’s stay on that blue planet, which has been my favorite since it aired.

As for your double-quoted spoiler, I agree wholeheartedly.

I’ve actually heard that a lot about the Blue Planet episodes. Those were really good, but just didn’t stick with me as well as this latest one.

Sorry to hear that, Mike. I wish I could give you some good advice, but this is out of my area of expertise. Maybe you should talk to your Dad’s doctor again, maybe your medications need adjusting. Have you seen the psychiatrist yet? If so, tell him that you feel you are backsliding. If not, maybe it is time to me with him. Keep in mind this is coming from someone that has little knowledge of what he is talking about. I hope and pray you get better.

I’m trying to see my dad’s doctor, but he’s hard to get a hold of. He’s only contactable by Dad or phone and has a secretary and no answering machine. My father pointed out that I should probably look into getting a new one who’s educational minds more with the age of computers, and with whom I’m a little bit more compatible. Oh, and my dad has hernia surgery tomorrow, my brother’s girlfriend’s father is in stage one of pancreatic cancer, and is going to start chemotherapy on St. Patrick’s Day. I had a breakdown in front of my crucifix yesterday and started sobbing. And I came home from work to that wasn’t too bad, only to indulge in considerable compulsions, and the associated inexplicable guilt, anger, anxiety, depression, and circular obsessiveness that I cannot control.

Hang in there Mike. Keep looking for a psychiatrist, and keep on pushing forward man.

I had been really into a girl for about a month. We went out a lot of dates and we really liked each other. Eventually she started having some family issues and started getting some really awful depression. I could tell her life was spiraling out of control. She talked to a therapist and decided it is best for her to not have a relationship with anyone right now. The saddest thing is that I completely understand and this is the right thing for her to do but I really liked her a lot. This hurt a lot 😦 I feel really hopeless and depressed

Try to take comfort in the fact that she’s doing what she feels is best for her right now. Respecting her and her choices is a great thing to do, and maybe when she’s feeling better you guys can rekindle something.

Breakups are tough, so just hang in there and try to find some joy in a hobby or school or work or whatever you get up to. Take the time to find yourself a bit.

Man, I heard Tusk on the radio yesterday. We have a great station that plays more obscure songs, so sometimes you get some great deep cuts. Tusk is such a good song.

Is Tusk really a deep track?

Not particularly, but I never hear it on the radio. That might have been the first time I ever had, actually.

Of course, I was born in 1989 so that may be a factor despite listening to classic rock stations growing up.

Well its not exactly the type of track that gets a lot of airtime on the radio these days.

I guess I only listen to self-branded classic rock stations.

I mean me too but I’ve never heard it played.

I feel like it was a hit in it’s time though. I think of deep tracks as those songs from popular albums that don’t make the cut for nostalgia radio stations to play, or as good songs that didn’t make the hits compilations.

You’re not wrong. “Deep cut” probably isn’t the right word. But “hit” isn’t either which is I think what Tyr meant.

Yeah!

Nice.

Lot of people I know fawn over Rumours, but I think the self-titled album is Fleetwood Mac’s (2.0) best.

Yeah, it has a lot of good stuff on it. I’m So Afraid is a really great track. They got away with more on the eponymous white album, but I think by 77 they had found their sound more or less.

Holy carp… I have recently been in agony due to a broken tooth with a nerve that is practically exposed. Last night I took six ibuprofen capsules, two codeine tablets, and held a cotton bud soaked in toothache drops (ethanol/phenol/benzocaine) on the exposed centre of the tooth, followed by another one soaked in clove oil just to get a few hours sleep.

Today I went to the doctor, and she gave me a small vial of magnesium salts. I waited until the pain was almost unbearable again, dissolved less than a teaspoon of this substance in lukewarm water and swirled it around in my mouth for about five minutes. Less than ten minutes later, the pain was almost completely gone and so far has not returned. She said she only had to do this twice for her own tooth and the pain never came back.

This shit is freaking awesome and I recommend it to anyone with tooth pain.

Very cool.

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like I’ve got some digging to do!

I could never get into TuPac’s stuff, he was pretty good but just too focussed on violence and depressing ghetto themes, that’s also why I don’t really care for Nas, despite his ability.

I know I listened to Madvillain at least once, but it didn’t take. Will check out more MF DOOM. I liked some of OutKast’s earlier stuff for a while but went off it again. Never gone too far into nerdcore but I quite like some of MC Frontalot’s tracks. Not really a fan of mc chris.

Yeah, I hear ya. Some of it just isn’t for everyone. Especially nerdcore. It’s hard for me to get into even.

I was kinda hoping for stuff that wasn’t on the list  ;)

Tyr, if you have any more suggestions I’d like to hear those too!

I’m sure you’ve heard of:
MF DOOM (or Madvillain or Danger Doom or King Geedorah) (Try out MM…FOOD)
Loot Pack
Madlib
Quasimoto
Wildchild
(Pretty much anyone off of the Stones Throw label)

I also enjoy (but listen to less):
TuPac (He’s a damn classic!)
Big Pun (hit or miss, check out Still Not A Player)
Kanye West (hit or miss, but Graduation is quite a good album. He’s gone to kinda a conceptual/artsy place that’s not for everyone [even me], but I suggest 808s and Heartbreak because it’s very different from Graduation)
Busdriver (Imaginary Places)
Grayskul (Prom Quiz or Scarecrow)
Jedi Mind Tricks (not for everybody at all, can be brutal but try out Saviorself)
Army of the Pharaohs (same as the above, lots of group raps so like an ultraviolent, conspiracy theory-believing Jurassic 5, check out Seven)
Outkast (their early stuff is really interesting, try out Elevators)
Tyler, the Creator (Not for everyone, haha)
Ludacris (hit or miss, try out Stand Up because I enjoy raps that kinda parody the game)
DMX (mostly for the hilarity of his angry raps like X Gon Give It To Ya)
G-Eazy (hit or miss modern white-guy raps, check out I Mean It)

For Nerdcore, I’m really picky about it because a lot of it is just junk that’s really tryhard. Most of these guys can be hit or miss, too.
Mega Ran
Richie Branson
Adam Warrock
Dr. Awkward
Backburner
Dual Core
