Yeah, that’s straight out of the novel, in fact, this script follows the novel fairly closely. The book actually starts up quite slow with the nurse in Costa Rica and the Tina incident. You don’t actually meet any of the main characters (with the possible exception of Ed Regis) until a few chapters in.

Yeah I read the book shortly after seeing the film way back when but I don’t rememeber the particularities of the story.

I think this type of story telling works well in books because you can have your plot simmer and slowly come to a boil whereas in films, you need to use your time wisely.

Comparing this script with the final film shows the filmmakers understood this and changed things around to make it flow better.

Yeah, I re-read the book about once a year so it’s all pretty well wired into my brain at this point.

I like the raptor tease.

Is that the part where it shows a bit of leg?

Meh. Not enough scales.

Not enough feathers.

Of course you’re strong enough, Mike. You’re self aware enough to not only identify that things aren’t right but to take action to try to make it right. Even coming on here and just writing about how bad you feel is a positive thing. It’s hard, it’ll take you a very long time to begin to feel in control and all the things you hate about those impulses might never leave you. But you’re on the right path as far as I can see.

The only thing you shouldn’t do is give up. It’ll be very difficult and you’ll feel like giving up every single day but just don’t, okay? You can slip as many times as you want but as long as you keep on trying to get the better of it you’ll never be weak. You’ll feel weak, you just won’t be weak.

Make sure you read Bingowings’ post above. So many people just suppress what they’re going through. It’s so incredibly brave to be able to open up here and to your family and therapist regardless of what things feel like from the inside.

Take it slowly and keep trying, Mike.

24-27 up. The gang tours the genetic factory, meets Dr. Wu, and we see our first dinosaur.

Right out of the book! It’s good. Doing the dinosaur reveal this way is so much less impactful than the film, though, one change I really approve of. They kinda blow through the whole cloning process here, but less so in the film. You can chalk it up to the smoke and mirrors of where Crichton eventually goes with The Lost World (I wonder if he was laying groundwork?).

I like the raptor tease. I honestly like Regis as a character and wish he’d made it into the film, because him being there allows for Gennaro and Muldoon to do their thing, which I love in the book.

I’m going to park the advice car for a minute and just remark on how articulate and courageous Mike O has been typing about what must be a very emotionally frustrating and confusing situation. There are plenty of people who have feelings like this and experience difficult to explain obsessions and don’t talk to anyone about it. Many of which sadly find no other escape than suicide. That you have been so frank and open to advice may help someone else wandering onto your words. Thanks for doing that and to all those in distress on the ocean of the web may you all avoid the rocks and find a safe harbour.

Great post, Bingo. You rock.

What was the point of hiring Richard Marquand in the first place?
Time

I get the feeling that Lucas is that kinda guy. We’ve all heard the stories about him wandering through LucasArts and throwing out suggestions that ended up totally rewriting or even scrapping games. He also worked on The Clone Wars and would throw out ideas and suggestions that ended up becoming holy canon, good or bad, which is why Korriban is now Moriband. From all I’ve heard, his “handlers” would bustle through before his visits and tell everyone he might come in contact with to just nod and smile whenever Lucas gave a suggestion, and then make it happen, no matter what.

So it’s not a stretch to believe that he was a similar guy on the set of Jedi.

Not wanting to lose your job, and wanting to impress a very influential and successful man are very powerful motivators.

Another fighter goes down:

Kimbo Slice - 42

I didn’t know much about him aside from his unique look, name, and that he was an exceptional fighter, and I’m not even into MMA. I remember seeing a series of videos with him and Michael Jai White talking about how to throw a punch and it being incredibly interesting. I wanted to watch his fight in February, but missed it due to my life being a mess.

Something fucky went on here though, foul play or drugs. Either way it’s incredibly sad. 42, man.

All the older ones around me are slowly being demolished and rebuilt, which makes me think the 70’s style exteriors will soon vanish from the American landscape.

I’m reminded of the KFC on 17th avenue in Calgary which only just got remodeled from its 80s-90s interior. You know, back when everything had that watercolour blue and pink wallpaper and the strange paintings and art of watercolour ships on the sea. It was an amazing time capsule. I’d forgotten what it felt like to walk into a 90s fast food joint until I went in once.
