The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I went in guarded but was pleasantly surprised. It was everything I wanted in a Star Wars sequel. Was it perfect? No, but the good definitely far outweighed the bad.

The acting was fantastic. Everyone turned in a solid performance and the new cast fit perfectly in the universe. Harrison turned on the magic and brought Han back to life. Love how character driven this film was. Oh and they got the real Ackbar to reprise the role! I was so worried they were going to use Tom Kane. LOVE that they brought back Erik Bauersfeld after a fan located him.

On the bad side, the plot was pretty thin. The Starkiller was completely unnecessary and never truly felt threatening. There were also way too many coincidences. Lastly, there was never any context given for how Rey would know about Jedi mind tricks and her rapid growth in the Force felt well…forced.

Those quibbles aside, I still thoroughly enjoyed the film and gladly consider it the fourth entry in the saga.

Yeah this is a return to form riffing old B-movies. Rifftrax has the luxury of never having to pay licensing fees since their main product is an external audio track to be played over films you provide yourself. MST3K has always had to pay licensing fees unless whatever they want to poke fun at is in the public domain.

The live stream countdown for the campaign was a huge success. They raised enough to do 13 episodes and a Christmas Special.

Why is the Unknown Region so close to the Deep Core? (Continued discussion)
Time

I think it traces back to the early WEG days. WEG provided the very backbone, the foundation, for everything we know about the Star Wars universe outside of the films.

They did a lot of awesome work expanding the universe BUT there was one aspect of it that was eventually abandoned but the echoes of which could still be felt going forward. That aspect being that the original contention was that most of the galaxy was still unexplored and it was new founded Empire that was leading this charge to explore what was out there and to conquer, exploit and enslave anything and everyone they came across.

For the longest time, it was a fact that Mon Cala/Dac was a newly discovered planet within the OT timeframe.

So with that context in mind, the Unknown Regions being laid out as they were made some sense. But it should have been readdressed loooooooong ago. That they’ve not done so at this opportune moment in time with the new canon is a massive failure on their part.

TREMORS (Film/Television series)
Time

Anyone else a gigantic Graboid fanatic? I don’t know what it is about that franchise but I’ve always been a huge fan. It probably has to do with the fact that the original four films and TV series were headed by my favorite writing/producing duo of Wilson and Maddock.

Anyway, what with the new film that just premiered a month ago and the big news dropped today. Well, I thought now was the perfect time for a thread.

Without further adieu, here’s the big news:

Earth-shaking reboot news!

There’s a TV series in the works reviving the sci-fi franchise Tremors — and original star Kevin Bacon is back on board as an actor and executive producer.

Universal Cable Productions and Blumhouse Productions are developing a show based on the 1990 cult favorite about giant killer worms, a movie that spawned four direct-to-video sequels. There was a previous TV version, as well (the 13-episode Tremors: The Series that aired on SciFi Channel in 2003).

Andrew Miller (The Secret Circle) has been tapped to write the adaptation.

Bacon’s involvement is particularly cool as the actor is returning to the franchise after 25 years. Bacon, who recently starred in Fox’s The Following, only appeared in the original Tremors (and doubtless turned down ample opportunities to be involved with the sequels). Bacon will reprise his character Valentine McKee and the setting will return to the fictional Nevada desert town of Perfection.

Earlier this year Bacon said he’d love to revisit the character. “I’d love to do something else with Tremors and revisit the character 25 years later,” he said. “Part of what’s great about that movie is there are next to no digital effects. The monsters are done with puppetry, and it’s still off, funny and scary — it’s a cool accomplishment.”

UCP and Blumhouse are currently shopping the project around to various networks and we’re told “multiple bidders” are interested. Obviously SciFi Channel’s new incarnation Syfy seems like one potential fit, but nowadays pretty much every network is interested in genre shows.
