General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread

I’m locked in battle with some dude on YouTube who keeps telling me that I’m not a true fan of Star Wars because it seems I’m the only person in the comments who dislikes the prequels.

I once stated there’s a lot more to the Star Wars galaxy than just Jedi and the Force and was berated for not knowing what Star Wars is.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *
Time

Star Wars concept artist Ian McCaig teased some VIII knowledge:

But here’s where it gets interesting… The meat really came at his mention of Rey, and then her mysterious background. He spoke of how Qui-Gon and Shmi had a romantic affair in early-mid drafts of TPM, and how you can still see the remnants of this idea in the final film. He also teased that (paraphrasing) ‘though none of these prequel-related concepts were able to be used outright, these ideas remain in the Lucas ecosystem, and filter through.’ AND, though he spoke thus quietly, he almost certainly then said: “…And now we have a new Skywalker.”

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * <strong>SPOILER THREAD</strong> *
Time

Star Wars concept artist Ian McCaig recently spoke at the Art and Industry of Imagination conference. He spilled some beans on The Force Awakens:

  • Lucas initially wanted nothing to do with VII, but in a short while after pre-production began, he decided he wanted to submit a script. He brought in Ian and another prequel artist (possibly Doug Chiang, I missed the name) to the Ranch to help him realize his concepts. The script was rejected outright, as a result of…
  • Disney’s banishment of anything mildly prequel-related. Usage of prequel-only characters, environments etc were banned, as to not incur the fan base’s wrath.
  • Disney execs were reluctant to include non-Caucasian characters. The new trio were all initially all Caucasian, but it was JJ’s favoring of Boyega that brought about VII’s multi-cultured character set.
  • A number of initial script ideas teased Anakin/Vader’s force ghost’s involvement, and Ian presented an idea so titillating (even to prequel-haters) along these lines that he had the audience clapping.
  • After being questioned by an audience member, he responded that he was unable to confirm nor deny if Lucas’ script had any influence or effect on the Arndt/Kasdan/Abrams script – but strongly implied to the positive.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

Star Wars concept artist Ian McCaig recently spoke at the Art and Industry of Imagination conference. He spilled some beans on the Han Solo film:

Lawrence Kasdan actually wrote the script for Han Solo before he began work on VII, and that it is (paraphrasing) ‘By far the best Star Wars script, and one of the best scripts period, that I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, I did all the things you should do when reading a good script. You’re in for a treat.’

<strong>Star Wars: Underworld</strong> (Cancelled Live Action Series) - general discussion thread
Time

Well this was unexpected. New details have emerged about the cancelled series and from quite a surprising place.

The director for the new God of War game used to work for Lucasfilm and got to read the scripts for the now abandoned series. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview with VentureBeat:

Probably the really small beginnings of this idea, the germination of this — when I was working at Lucas, I was allowed to go up to the ranch and read the scripts for the [canceled live-action Star Wars] TV show. It was the most mind-blowing thing I’d ever experienced. I cared about the Emperor. They made the Emperor a sympathetic figure who was wronged by this fucking heartless woman. She’s this hardcore gangster, and she just totally destroyed him as a person. I almost cried while reading this. This is the Emperor, the lightning out of the fingers Emperor. That’s something magical. The writers who worked on that, guys from The Shield and 24, these were excellent writers.

All Things Star Trek
Time

Productions can only be 15 minutes long, with a max of two videos? What kind of bullcrap is this.

This will effectively kill Star Trek Continues and the Trek fanfilm community at large.

Continues has:

  • Professionals that previously worked on the series behind and in front of the screen
  • Authentic reproductions of costumes and props
  • Average runtime of 50 minutes an episode

I was kind of hopeful for Beyond but now I hope it crashes and burns. Same for their upcoming idiotic subscription scheme series.
