George doesn't like 3D That 'comes out at you' from the screen (!)

The skeptic in me wonders if he "doesn't like" that sort of 3D because he can't do it with the source material he has. Because that statement is inconsistent with Sy Snootles' ROTJ Special Edition lips.

I'm going to have to disagree based on the new Star Tours. Outside of one shot, at least on my path, the 3D was more about depth and perspective than shock and amazement with things popping out at you. That project suggests that he actually means it when he says he's not crazy about 3D as a spectacle, but more as an enhancement.

You're inside a ship on that ride. You can't have stuff popping out at you all the time unless you're supposed to be sucked out into space. The only appropriate time to have something pop out at you is if it literally bursts through the cockpit window.

Where's the quote of Lucas saying he only likes 3D for the depth? So far the only person I've seen talk about it is John Knoll and he's the person who was put in charge of the conversion.

I wonder how much this would have to make in proportion to how much it cost to create the 3-D version? I'm betting it'll do gangbusters because all things Star Wars do, but it'll be interesting to see.

Let's not forget that the 2008 Clone Wars movie was a complete bomb, critically and commercially (35mil domestic). And that was a brand new piece of work meant to segue into the tv series.

The Clone Wars movie was the show. They just stitched the first few episodes together. A real shame too as those were the worst of the season.

Where's kenny at, anyway? I don't think he's blessed the forums with his presence since the Blu-rays came out.

He's moved on:

Hello Jason and Jimmy Mac,
I've been a huge fan of Star Wars since 1990 when I saw the 1st film Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope on a VHS tape and I've loved all the films and The Clone Wars TV series ever since. I've been a loyal supporter of George Lucas since the very beginning. What makes me mad sometimes is you hear all of these so-called fans who claim to be Star Wars fans but say not-so-nice things about GL -- that he ruined the series with the Special Editions and the Prequel films, or he won't release the original versions of the films on Blu-Ray, and other not-so-nice things. Star Wars would not be the success it is today without GL, period, end of story.
Take Care Jason and Jimmy Mac, love the ForceCast and as always May The Force Be With You.
Sincerely,
Faithful ForceCast listener Kenny Kraly Jr. From Ohio

I haven't really explored '80s cinema outside of Spielberg, Lucas and The Breakfast Club. At least, I can't think of anything from the '80s off the top of my head outside of SW, Raiders, and the aforementioned John Hughes film. I tend to prefer movies from the late '70s back, and sometimes a few from the '90s.

That...that sounds like you haven't seen The Goonies.

(Spielberg did produce and write it though)

Snippet from an interview with John Knoll in the latest issue of Insider:

When you start a conversion, do you start from the beginning or the middle or the end?

We worked in an odd order, because with Episode I, we were also doing a restoration. One of the first questions that my Associate VFX Supervisor, Dorne Huebler, and I realized, was that if we were going to take this movie and cut it up into 2,000 separate pieces, we had an opportunity to upgrade what those 2,000 separate pieces are. It seemed like we had a perfect opportunity to go back and create a cleaner, sharper, and purer version of the movie.

In fact, the window was closing on that; these archive tapes don't last forever and they haven't been meticulously catalogued and archived because no one thought that was really the master of the film, so it wasn't clear that we were going to be able to find all of them.

Where did you find them?

They were in a variety of places. It was some work to find them and we found about 98 percent of them. So we went back to the original material, and if you look, you're actually seeing about eight percent more movie than in the original release. In the original, there was a bit of cropping, so you lost a little bit of information. We have slightly more of an image now.

The "I met a famous person" thread

Hmm, I'll have to think about this one. I've seen a good number of celebs in person so I think I'll just list the ones I've met:

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

Love both of the clips. That new Hoth background at the beginning is great and I never noticed how oddly that star destroyer lowers in that establishing shot.

One thing I've wondered and I don't know if it would actually help but have you tried applying a tiny motion blur to the digital mouth enhancements to Yoda? For some reason I think it might help in the same way when they apply it to stop motion nowadays but I'm probably just talking nonsense.

That Bespin sky comparison is fascinating.
