we just didn't see it happen.

If we don't see it than it didn't happen, as simple as that. If we started to claim something that is not seen in the film then one could claim, with equal weight, that Luke had sex with Yoda - we just didn't see it of course.

I don't know about that but his training was pretty involved...

"Basically, it is like 'The Godfather'; it’s the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s [about] a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution..."

"[It will reveal the] greasy, seamy underbelly of 'Star Wars.'"

The live action Star Wars show was to be about the underworld in Star Wars. Think the Sopranos in space and you're just about there.

They wrote a bunch of scripts and then realized it was too cost prohibitive to do for television and so they put it on the backburner and were going to wait it out for the costs to go down.

1313 was supposed to be a sort of tie-in to the show and kept going forward into production long after they shelved the show. Then of course that eventually got cancelled.

Rebels is an all new show with no ties to any of the previous efforts.

At least Tim Curry's accent sounds English, the actor who's doing Tarkin's voice sounds a bit Australian

I think Stephen Stanton did an excellent job as Tarkin.

I came here originally because Darth Marsden at the Telltale Games forums (now at Double Fine; we all moved forums after TTG screwed theirs up) brought up Adywan's ANH:R in the middle of a communal rant on George Lucas.

I was wondering where everyone went! Now it's just full of new people threatening TT and demanding refunds because this was their first TT launch day experience. =P

There a specific sub-forum everyone hangs out in over at DF?

What are you reading?

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Well, I was misinformed about when the movie was coming out and so in the last week of September I burned through this book so that I had read it all before seeing the film adaptation. Suffice it to say, I was annoyed when I found out the true release date. But I found the book captivating enough that I probably wouldn't have taken much longer to finish it regardless of when I had started. I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. Though I could have done without the siblings' subplot.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread

a Jedi certainly reinforces the idea that GL was already thinking about Force potential in genetic terms. On the other hand, it makes the story that Obi-Wan had to "discover" Anakin and recruit him into the Jedi Order (as Ben tells Luke in Kasdan's draft) a bit strange.

Not really. This is how I figure that would work. You have two brothers, their father was a great Jedi Knight but was killed in the line of duty. Anakin idolizes his father and wants to honor his memory and take up the mantle.

While Owen grew bitter over the loss of his father and didn't want to have anything to do with those wizards who got his father killed. So when Obi-wan comes around hoping to recruit the sons of Skywalker to help in the desperate fight against the rising clone menace Owen wants nothing to do with it.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I feel like we're talking in circles now. Lucas involvement was discussed in detail very early on.

Here's a five part discussion with George and Kathleen about the future:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Lucas: I've always said I wasn't going to do anymore and that's true I'm not going to do anymore. But that doesn't mean I'm unwilling to turn it over to Kathy to do more. I have story treatments of 7, 8 and 9 and a bunch of other movies.

And obviously we have hundreds of books and comics and everything you could possibly imagine. So, you know I sort of moved that treasure trove of stories and various things to Kathy and I have complete confidence that she's gonna take them and make great movies.

Kennedy: We are absolutely going to make Star Wars movies and we're in the midst of the really fun part of the process. Which is sitting down with a couple of writers and we're starting to discuss ideas and we're starting to talk about what those stories might be.

I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to be entirely on my own because it's important that he at least continue to be a little guardian angel on my shoulder helping me do this.

 ...

Interviewer: And what do you see your role is as Creative Consultant? What does that mean?

Lucas: I just said that I would back her up and I would be there. Especially helping with the script and making sure the script sort of...there's a lot of blank spots in the story treatment that hopefully we can fill in.

In addition, here's a great article that goes in depth on how the deal came to be:

How Disney Bought Lucasfilm—and Its Plans for 'Star Wars'

At first Lucas wouldn’t even turn over his rough sketches of the next three Star Wars films. When Disney executives asked to see them, he assured them they would be great and said they should just trust him. “Ultimately you have to say, ‘Look, I know what I’m doing. Buying my stories is part of what the deal is.’ I’ve worked at this for 40 years, and I’ve been pretty successful,” Lucas says. “I mean, I could have said, ‘Fine, well, I’ll just sell the company to somebody else.’ ”

Once Lucas got assurances from Disney in writing about the broad outlines of the deal, he agreed to turn over the treatments—but insisted they could only be read by Iger, Horn, and Kevin Mayer, Disney’s executive vice president for corporate strategy. “We promised,” says Iger. “We had to sign an agreement.”

When Iger finally got a look at the treatments, he was elated. “We thought from a storytelling perspective they had a lot of potential,” he says.

Based on that article and another I can't recall at the moment, I would say that Lucas didn't write up his rough outlines for the ST until after that meeting in May of 2011. Which would have given him around 14 months before calling Iger in June of 2012.

As for the franchise as a whole, I think too much emphasis is placed on Disney. Everyone seems to forget that the torch was passed to Kathleen.

When it comes to the direction and focus of the Marvel movie franchise people don't bring up Disney, they bring up Kevin Feige. The same should go for Star Wars and Kathleen Kennedy.

Fringe (2008-2013)

Just watched the series finale. Overall, a good show. I liked the modern X-Files vibe it had when it first began. I started to grow concerned when it abandoned that for these huge season arcs but I think it turned out alright.

The cast was great. Though I had reservations about the casting of Joshua Jackson. Coming hot off LOST you could tell Peter Bishop was supposed to be the new Sawyer. The way they wrote the character and his backstory, how he kept calling women "Doll." It takes a certain kind of man to pull that off and not sound ridiculous. Joshua Jackson is not one of those men. But after the writers figured out what Joshua Jackson could bring to the table I think he did just fine in the roll.

I really hated the alternate timeline storyline though. That whole season was pretty frustrating and I hate that they never resolved it. They just gave Olivia her memories from the other timeline and called it quits.

The whole Observer invasion never made a lick of sense though. Nor how the resistance could exist or make as much progress as they did. It was established that the Observers could not only travel through time but also through the infinite timelines. Suddenly now that they've invaded though all they can do is teleport and give people nosebleeds.

On an emotional level, the finale succeeds but I think it could have been a lot better. I was fully expecting that once their plan succeeded that EVERYTHING would have changed. If there were no Observers then September would have never interrupted Walternate's test for the cure for his son. Which meant he would have cured him on his own and Walter would never have stolen Peter in the first place. A somewhat bitter end but the logical one given the course of events.

All Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder #1

So Batman: Arkham Origins comes out later this month. In preparation for that I decided to delve back into the Bat's early years. This title in particular was name dropped by one of the game's developers as an influence. Apparently there's a lot of controversy surrounding the depiction of Batman in this series. I can definitely see where that's coming from but I kind of like it. I was sad to find out that this storyline still hasn't been resolved.

Dark Moon Rising - Batman & the Monster Men #1

Love the title for this one. Basically I'm sticking to storylines that tie into Year One. The art isn't that great but the writing was decent. It's apparently part of a trilogy of stories. Looking forward to the next part.

Legends of the Dark Knight #1

Nice tie-in story to Year One that fleshes out the whole bat thing.
