General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

I remember hearing that before. I really hope that's not true or else what the heck happened?

Yoda: Yes, run! Yes, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.

Luke: Vader... Is the dark side stronger?

Yoda: No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.

Luke: But how am I to know the good side from the bad?

Yoda: You will know... when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, NEVER for attack.

Alien: Resurrection - Special Edition (1997/2003)

Joss Whedon....what the heck man? I never got to see this in theaters or watch it in its entirety. What a giant pile. Started off on a really bad foot with all the terrible "humor." It improves toward the middle while they're on the run and then just craps out again at the end.

They're supposed to be outside of governed space to conduct these top secret experiments. One of the cornerstones of this franchise is that space travel takes ages. So long that they have to put the crew into suspended animation but this giant installation can just scooch over who knows how far a distance to reach earth in about the time it takes to watch an episode of Law and Order: SVU?

Then there's the whole Newborn...thing. Just blechhhh.

It feels like Jon Spaihts was heavily inspired by this "film" while writing Prometheus.

Oh and it was quite the surprise to see Adrian Cross from this season of 24 pop up.

Ah, but you can't have thousands of Sith with thousands of red lightsabers running around in a PT/OT setting, can you? That pesky Rule of Two gets in the way.

SWG didn't seem to have a problem with it.

Though they should have just forgone Jedi as a class altogether.

SWG would have been perfect if set post-ROTJ. That way you could have your stupid Jedi class and even be trained by Master Skywalker himself. But nooooooo, we need the Emperor, Vader and Jabba alive!

I like how the TOTJ comics depicted the ancient Jedi as being largely decentralized, with masters only coming together to deliberate in times of great crisis. Making it so that the Jedi have always had some central leadership in the form of the Jedi Council is just another stupid retcon made to force the older stuff into matching the prequels.

I think you'll get a kick out of this discussion that's currently going on...

Edit: Nevermind, link won't work as their profile is private apparently.

But it was basically fans lamenting the fact that TOR looked like the prequels instead of the TOTJ comics and blamed it on the general public not being able to understand something so different.

Prometheus - Special Edition (fanedit released 2013)

Finally a decent film! I still don't care for the core concept behind it but at least it's not a giant muddled mess anymore. The film feels tighter and more streamlined. The reincorporated scenes help clear up various character motivations. All of the bloat has been excised. I really don't understand how Lindelof scored this gig. Something simple like the handling of Fifield and Millburn was just so incredibly botched. But this fanedit really saved the film.

The only problem with it was that the audio wasn't very good. The parts that had a new score would drown out the dialog and whenever scenes got really loud everything would mush together into unintellible noises. But those problems were few and far between. Had the audio been done flawlessly I would say this was the most perfect fanedit I've ever seen. I was really impressed with how he managed to salvage the film.

^And I was actually looking forward to seeing it. *shakeshead*

I thought it was a really good movie that capture the spirit of the 1954 original better then any film in the franchise since and the focus on the human characters made everything extremely intense.

Mmmmm....the trailers maybe tried to capture the feeling of the original 1954 film. But I'd say this film captured the feeling more of something like Godzilla vs. Mothra. Either way I loved the film.

Absolutely!

So the dude made a pretty good flick where all he could afford was models. I don't see why that makes him the Chosen One.

It fits with the hiring pattern for the films thus far. He's still a relatively young filmmaker with a passion for the genre and practical effects. Who is also an excellent director and writer.

I think he'd be great for the franchise.

Harrison Ford Returning to U.S. for Six Months of Rehab

Harrison Ford will take six months off from filming the new Star Wars movie in Britain to return to the U.S. for treatment on his shattered leg, according to a U.K. report.

The Indiana Jones actor was first thought to have fractured his ankle during filming in England earlier this month (Jun14), when his foot was crushed by the door of a spacecraft prop. However, his injury turned out to be a broken leg, with reports suggesting he would be out of action for up to eight weeks.

It has now emerged that he will not be able to return to film Star Wars: Episode VII for six months as he needs rehab treatment for his left limb, which was fixed with a number of metal plates during surgery this week (beg16Jun14).

A source tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "Shooting is continuing, but Harrison won't be back for months... the film company is looking into extending filming well into the second half of this year to allow Ford time to get back on his feet."

Ford is still receiving treatment at a hospital in England but will fly back to Los Angeles with his actress wife Calista Flockhart to work with a physiotherapist, according to editors at the publication.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

Interesting...that could be why they're trying to make Rebels more fun and like the original film. To counter-balance where the new trilogy could go if that's accurate.

Personally I've never been one of those fans that wants dark brooding Star Wars. So I hope even if that's somewhat accurate that they keep the tone close to the original trilogy.

Decent article, I strongly agree with that last line.

The thing that really rubbed me the wrong way with the first HALO Anniversary was how they changed the outdoor atmosphere. The original HALO had these really alien purple tinted skies and the skybox in general gave the ring this epic sense of proportion.

When they did the graphical overhaul they changed the sky to this overpowering teal hue and robbed it of that same sense of proportion. It was a change for the sake of change.

I'm always rankled when I see HD remasters that change random little details for no reason and it happens in virtually all of them.

The changes for HALO 2 Anniversary seem pretty tasteful for the most part. Probably helps that they're not just recycling art assets from Reach this time.

Looks like business is booming:

Pinewood Shepperton plc (“the Company”) welcomes today’s decision by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to grant planning permission for PSDF.

Commenting on today's announcement, Ivan Dunleavy, Chief Executive of Pinewood Shepperton plc said:

“Our project builds on the success of the Government’s policy for the creative industries and addresses the shortage of stage space in the UK. As a result of today’s green light from the Secretary of State, thousands of much needed new jobs will be created in this growing sector of the economy. We want to begin construction as soon as possible. I’d like to thank colleagues both within and outside the industry, for the tremendous support they have given the project.”

PSDF will secure the future growth of Pinewood Studios which will address the clear need for additional capacity in the UK. It comprises doubling the existing Pinewood Studios by adding a total of 100,000 sq. m. of new facilities, including studios and stages, workshops and production offices.

The Company will continue to implement its existing planning consents at Shepperton Studios.

The Furious Gods: Making of Prometheus (2013)

This was ridiculously long and I can't believe I watched the whole thing. At the very least I now know the majority of the film's failings don't all fall upon the shoulders of Damon Lindelof. Despite the length of this documentary they don't get very deep into the conception of the film. From what I can gather the studio had been bugging Scott to return to the franchise but were struggling with coming up with an idea on how to go about it.

Eventually they start talks with a wet behind the ears screenwriter who comes up with this idea to focus on the Space Jockey from the first film.

The studio loves this idea and decides to let him roll with it and present it to Scott. Scott loves the idea and starts to roll with it from there. So the whole worn out ancient alien, Chariots of the Gods bullcrap came from there.

It was kind of sad really, he wanted to do something new and exciting and to him that idea was. Not knowing what a tired and boring trope it's become these days. You know it's time to put a concept to bed when Michael Bay latches onto it.

They don't discuss it at all in the documentary but I recall hearing it was a mandate from the studio that they specifically didn't want to focus on the Aliens but for it be mainly on the Engineers. Which in my opinion was incredibly stupid. You sell everyone on the idea that this is a prequel to Alien and then give them something completely different. It felt incredibly dishonest.

What I will say about the film is I love the devotion to practical effects. Ridley's methodology was if it can be done practically do it that way. Only use digital effects as a last resort. It was also nice to find that they shot a majority of the film at Pinewood Studios. They did an excellent job. So I'll be very happy if a majority of the craftsman that worked on this end up working on the upcoming Star Wars projects.
