Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?

My original reason for supporting Blu-ray was because of animation. Accurately displaying lines in as crisp a fashion as possible requires low compression rates. If all of the bit-rate and space can be used to the fullest on Blu-ray, I'm sure there would be a noticeable difference between an anime transferred to Blu-ray in comparison to HD-DVD. Unfortunately I don't know if that kind of utilization of BDs will ever come along. At the very least, Blu-ray can offer better performance in terms of multiple language tracks for a piece of animation. I'm glad it now looks as if it's going to be the winner.

Either way, the movie I most look forward to getting on Blu-ray (when I get a player and an HDTV) will be Wings of Honneamise. I own the English dub on VHS already would love to watch the film at a quality that is closer to what I would see in a full-fledged theater.

I might have said this on a previous page, but my theory for Lost's strangeness involves fate somehow. Like I believe the island exists in an alternate version of earth by utilizing a different history altogether. Hearing that the character's are supposedly dead and at the bottom of the ocean then made sense to me since they might have split off into two versions of themselves by traveling to the island. I thought the same thing when I saw Mr. Eye-patch-man come back to life. Perhaps it's even a thing where anybody could potentially die on the island and come back.

This idea of fate could tie together the show's fixation on free will, birth, life, death, and limitations. I'm hoping the message of the show will involve something along the lines of Locke's faith being the source of his free will. That would be neat.

Wherever they decide to go, I want the end to at least be as cool as what I just described, if not better. If not, I'll be forced to regard this show as a failure. They've backed themselves into too many corners and I don't want them to explain all of that away with simple smoke and mirrors. In fact, if the whispers that Sayid heard in the jungle were simply "the others" hiding in the bushes and if the creepy, silent people of the jungle (which trained the teddy-bear sporting child to be creepy like them) were just "the others" out for a Sunday afternoon stroll, then my respect for this show will have dropped dramatically just from those explanations alone.

Whether you're watching an HD or SD digital broadcast, you're still picking that transmission up through an antenna. In other words, you still can use rabbit ears pick up any local digital signals. In fact, I found that rabbit ears work pretty well.

I see your point. I don't have anything against collective bargaining myself, and that's why I didn't care about the strike at first. Heck, I don't even watch TV. But, looking at the affects of their strike, I don't see what it's accomplishing. I just see that it's now going to hurt my ability to enjoy Lost and I know which side I'm currently perceiving as whiny. I could easily be wrong in that perception of course, but I don't care too much. Just making a comment.

That writer's guild is out to make enemies. This no new shows nonsense is turning me off more than it is making me appreciate them. If they aren't talented enough to own their own intellectual properties then they are nothing more than factory writers being paid to churn out a product and they really shouldn't have too high a view of themselves. If these geniuses were really interested in progressing the nature of written entertainment, they'd be creating something new and not destroying what they have.

He'd probably enjoy the game a lot. I find it very fun. I was just mentioning some features that I miss from the olden days.

Peter Jackson evidently IS returning for The Hobbit...sort of...

I think that seemingly endless action sequences, one after another, is boring. The Hobbit could be made into a great film for all the reasons why Fellowship of the Ring was the best best of the PJ films. Unfortunately, he'll probably stuff the story with a bunch of crap that isn't needed. Any man who thinks it was cool to have the Steward of Gondor run two miles, while on fire, and then leap off the edge of the city's summit should not be trusted with making the Hobbit . . . not in a perfect world at least.

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...

I wish your project luck.

My take is that the original films were so amazing that they deserve a high degree of loving attention. What fans crave or George Lucas owns doesn't matter to me so much by comparison. It's a moral issue realizing that great art and hard work deserve both respect and honor. The original story and the original form of the classic trilogy should get careful, individual treatment apart from George's latest edit of the week (history alone should require at least this much).

Are you making bear puns? Beorn is an awesome character, so I wouldn't blame you.

What I am referring to is the fact that current factories producing DVD's can be slightly altered and can make HD DVD's, I'm pretyt confident that licensing fees would be minimal if history is correct. However, to make Blu-Ray discs, it takes a whole factory re-tooling and I am pretty certain they'd jack up licensing fees like crazy once they leave HD DVD dead in the dirt. That all equals high assed Blu-Ray discs. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno, I'm just speculating about a subject I admittedly don't know much about other than what I read on here and in the news.

As I remember, that was an additional cost of a buck or two for each BD over HD-DVD. Now that the production lines are up and running, the cost of the manufacturing upgrade is probably negligible in comparison to the profits.

Otherwise, the Blu-ray organization is big and wouldn't start voting to abuse the market anymore than DVDs do. The primary companies behind the BD format are most of the primary companies behind the DVD format. The only proprietary things about Blu-ray that I can think of would be the companies that own the patents for the technology behind BD. if they get bitchy and greedy with their agreements to the organization of which they are members, they could potentially cause the cost of Blu-ray discs to go up, but I highly doubt they would go that far.

Why though? So the next movie can waste time showing Lyra before she goes into the other world? The second book began far after that point.

Did Pullman also like the other, pathetic contrivances that replaced the book's plot (like Iorek becoming king before fighting at Bolvangar)? Did he like all of the Lyra's World for Dummies sequences and explanations when the original story focused on characters and mystery instead? Did he like all of the incredibly-boring, added scenes depicting the bad guy's belated intentions and faulty knowledge as a way to ruin almost all of the story's suspense?

I'd have trouble believing that any author would have supported the final film we got. That is unless that author is best with books and likes bad movies. :\

Whether he's a liar or not, Huckabee has a history of supporting tax increases and welfare programs. He's not someone a real conservative would ever pick. I agree that Romney is similarly flawed, but I would argue that's he's not quite as bad. The biggest area to distrust Romney is on abortion, but to the degree that he'll affect abortion (say in terms of judges) I can't see him doing a bad job. I'd rather support the guy who'll fight for tax cuts and free market principles; I see Romney and Giuliani being better in this regard.

Otherwise, Thompson all the way.

This movie was awful. The way it tortured the book's plot line, as well as logic in general, was unacceptable. The book was fantastic and did not deserve that kind of treatment. Was the screenplay even proofread?!

The special effects were very good, I loved the design work, the actors and actresses were perfect choices (particularly Nicole Kidman as Coulter) and their performances were well done. Considering all of that in conjunction with how fantastic the original story was, I am at a complete loss as to how this movie ended up this bad.

Central/South America?

That was more about Spain and Portugal's colonialism than anything. Roman Catholic conversions were not the primary goal for the warfare and mostly happened on top of that. At worst the colonial powers saw themselves as having the superior religion and deserving to rule on that basis. It's not as if the religious freedoms of the native populations were persecuted in extremely severe ways (in a large-scale, general sense). Also, it wasn't difficult evangelizing to the Central/South Americans since the loyalty they had to their previous religions wasn't exactly what we could call strong.

That said, the horrors committed against those populations were awful. Central and South America are still heavily fucked up because of what Spain and Portugal did. However, you can't directly blame Roman Catholicism for that (and certainly not the rest of Christendom). (England and the U.S. of A. that followed certainly weren't good to the North Americans, but those regrettable events generally weren't as bad.)

BECAUSE THAT WAS ONE OF THE RULES I POSTED WHEN I CREATED THIS THREAD.

Rob started the NSFW status by posting a naked picture of a very feminine-looking trans-gender man (a number of pages back). (I think Moth3r edited the thread when he saw it.) Otherwise there hasn't been anything since then really.

Yeah, no kidding. I think all it gets you is constantly screwed over. My experience anyway.

Exactly. I was hoping perhaps Sean could inform me why atheists think people should be moral. Perhaps they actually have sound reason since many of them claim to use it so well. Otherwise, I must confess that morality is a very confounding thing to me.
