General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

Revenge of the Sith. Kinda dull sometimes.  I had a thought watching it last night.

Just imagine this.  Palpy and Anakin are watching the opera. A servant brings Palpy a drink, offers one to Anakin, who is going to refuse but a look from Palpy makes him reconsider and he takes it. They are both having a drink throughout the scene.

No new dialogue. No new special effects. Just a little bit of business that:

  • reinforces the subtext of the scene, serving as a kind of metaphor
  • give the actors something to do other than stare at eachother.
  • give the audience something to see other than bad greenscreen compositing.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

OVER THE HOLIDAYS.

INT. Thanksgiving Dinner.

Douchebag In Law: "So you say these inner city schools you work at are bad? But isn't it all about the parents? Isn't it all about personal responsibility?"

Me: "Hmmm? How much do you spend sending your kid to that private school?"

(long pause. Douchebag walks away).

END SCENE

And somehow I'M THE BAD GUY! Cousin brought it up again last night. Argh.

People are worried about if they throw out the current script that they won't get a new one in time to start shooting for a 2016 release. I'm pretty sure that every writer in Hollywood has a Trek spec script, and if they didn't, they've written one since Friday.

My co-host and I talk about our thoughts on this whole business in next week's podcast. I'll post a link when it's up.

 Looking forward to the podcast.

I'd rather read what two guys wrote on a napkin at Denny's than whatever cripe (crap + tripe) Orci managed to create.

Ady had been working on the edit for almost two years when he released that.

If you watch it with CC activated it explains what's changed but even those changes have changed nearly five years later.

Maybe someone should do a fan edit of the trailer with what we know is different put in.

ESB:R:TFT:R

We could make RETRO trailers, hyping the release of previous ESB:R trailers!

Thank GOD Orci is out.

The man has written dreck... sometimes made watchable by a) talented directors or b) already being a beloved franchise with lots of good will built in.

He can take his nonsensical 9/11 theories elsewhere thank you. (Seriously, look at STID! He cant make his conspiracy theories make sense when he writes the whole thing himself!)

Here are some directors I'd love to see at the helm.

Danny Boyle

Cary Fukunaga

Pete Travis

Lexi Alexander

Joe Johnston

Joseph Kosinski

^Yup. My nephews speak with mid-western accents despite their father speaking with a very strong Aussie accent.
The idea that all those clones would sound like whats-his-name just because they came from him is stupid.

It would be funny but appropriate if all the Jango clones sounded like Kaminoans.

Why though did George decide to dub the PT aliens instead of subtitle them?

It makes Chewie, Greedo and Jabba look stupid since everyone can speak English but them (nevermind the Ewoks, since they've never encountered offworlders). Ooh... and it makes me wonder which they're going to do for the sequels.

My guess is it was an ease-of-watching choice.

The Neimoidians are dubbed, I assumed because they have a LOT of dialogue. They also speak to eachother, meaning who conversations would be subtitled.

The Geonosians are subtitled because they speak so much less. Greedo and Jabba are both subtitled, and they all carry on conversations with people who speak English, so there's not to much reading involved.

Fun fact, my Grandpa fought in Europe, mostly Italy, during the War.

He once told me that you could tell where a man fought by what racial slurs they used. He didn't know that 'Nip' was a racial slur until the 1970s, because men in the European theater of war used 'Jap,' and when he'd heard 'Nip' he'd assumed it was a normal term, like 'Brit.'

I mean, I thought Return of the Jedi established that Fett basically lived at Jabba's. Not that I ever much liked the idea, but what the hell else is he doing just chilling there in the movie?

Neither makes a whole lot of sense, but the idea of him chilling over at Jabba's hut seems much better than the alternative. I always figured he's getting paid to be there. A bodyguard, perhaps, albeit a really ineffectual one.

Naturally, the real explanation is that he was a meanie in ESB and thus needed to get defeated by a hero in RotJ, but no one bothered to think his inclusion through. That's shoddy RotJ scriptwriting for you.

What's shoddy about it? Here's what we know from the ESB:

1: Boba Fett is a bounty hunter. It's a seedy gig.

2: He's clear that in addition to the Imperial bounty on the Falcon, he also wants to deliver Han to Jabba for a reward.

Here's what we know from ROTJ:

1: Boba Fett is at Jabba's palace. Maybe he's chilling, maybe he's working. He's armed and ready, so it's not unlikely Jabba hired him. Is it possible he USUALLY works for Jabba, and spends lots of time at the palace? This is possible but there's not evidence one way or the other.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Third vote here for Boris Karloff.  A bit of a shame he became so typecast - he could have done anything.  Although I think he enjoyed his horror niche a lot.

But he got typecast to a genre, not to a role, so we still get lots of variety in his great performances.

His great as a working class thug in "The Body Snatcher"

as an elegant but evil gentleman in "The Black Cat"

as basically a comedy role in "The Old Dark House"

as some Egyptian dude in "The Mummy"

Ady, can you give any details about this other project? Is it a Star Wars fan film?

Alas, Ady can't even tell the team what project it is. Very hush hush for some reason.

Most likely the filmmakers simply wish to handle promotion themselves, and have made it clear to the crew that it's not their job to talk about the project. It's not uncommon.

You might be right, but I prefer to think Adywan was secretly directing Ep 7.
