The New Generation of Star Wars Fans

I got a lotta hope about the Next Generation. Look at merchandise. I was at Disneyland, and during the entire trips saw two pieces of PT merch. LEGO Star Wars shwag is almost totally OT. Angry Birds Star Wars merch is almost totally OT. Fisher Price Star Wars merch is heavily OT. In all of these cases I'll add "with the notable exeption of Darth Maul."

People complain that Maul should have been the villain throughout the PT, but if he was, Lucas would have totally mishandled him. "Killing" Maul in Episode 1 was the best thing that could have happened to the character.

It's almost like an oxymoron, yet it's completely accurate.  Maul's introduction was handled relatively well in TPM.  He was mysterious, a badass, and the visual embodiment of his role.  But if George decided to extend his role into AOTC and ROTS, he would have stripped away the mystery and come up with equally contrived plot elements as are already present in those films.

You mean exactly like how every EU and PT appearance of Boba Christ Fett makes him lamer and lamer?

The concept of the Force that could be present in a cloned Jedi sounds ridiculous as if the soul of a human being could be reproduced in a cloned unit. Besides, the very word combination "Dark Jedi" is similar to "round square": how is that a Jedi could be "Dark". He's a Sith in this case.

Joruuuus Cboath was not a Sith.

  • A) the term didn't mean anything then, and
  • B) even in the context of the 8,000 different Sith organizations introduced since TPM, he wasn't a part of any of them.

The truth about remakes...

The only problem with that is that the guy that remade Psycho might qualify as someone that loves and respects the original.

Hmm. Yes. Perhaps I should also add that the person who remakes a film shouldn't just love/respect it, but also have something significantly new to bring to the table; if you're just going to regurgitate a movie without putting a fresh spin on it, then what's the point?

Like "The Wicker Man" remake? Had some very interesting points to make about male/female dichotomy, and a bold vision of bees/matriarchal society imagery to layer on the original film. Must have been a perfect remake.

Cinema Cliche firsts
Time

OK, so in "Creature From the Black Lagoon" the film historian's commentary claims that "Creature" was the first film to do the "...I'm so scared. Eeek! Something touched me, oh wait, it's my friend tapping my shoulder." gag.

So lets see if we can identify the first documented appearance of other total cliches.

Here's one:

  • I person is delivering a speech that they don't want to. We cut, and see that they are along, practicing it. Ha ha.

Yes.

I have an awesome DVD collection. I see no need to spend any cash to upgrade anything to Blu-Ray

Not long ago I was content watching VHS tapes on my 13 in TV. Now I have a 52 inch plasma and a DVD collection. I'm a happy dude.

I take it you watch SD TV also.

I don't do cable but I stream HD from my BD player.

People still buy DVD's?

I haven't the budget to get anything better. Besides, I'm satisfied with DVD-quality definition -- I don't need anything better.

Your first reason is legit, your second is insane.

Yeah, I know -- it's so much saner to have an insatiable addiction for each shiny new gimmick that comes along.

 Remember Hi Def-DVD?
