It could be that these tropes come from *deep breath* the 'new world'.

America for example is a largely immigrant nation where it's very likely that a Polish Jewish woman may marry a Roman Catholic Irish man and the child would have a cultural/ethnic mix in and environment not shared with both parents.

It would make sense then if you are to tell stories of future interplanetary colonialists to draw upon the recent history of colonialism in our history.

Ergo all these half human half something else characters.

Besides the totally nonsense biology I've always hated the "two halves of me are warring!" crap. IIRC that was Torres's first line in Voyage. Even before I had biracial children, I felt it crossed a line from lazy writing towards paternalistic racism.

Well, I admitted that I could easily be wrong for the very reasons you mentioned.  But if I am right, it might give folks a little more sympathy for Warbler, as I feel that people are unnecessarily harsh on him.  Even if he merits no such diagnosis, he clearly struggles with certain aspects of humor, and has a unique personality on this board.  It seems to me that implicitly calling him a passive aggressive paranoiac is the weightier sin, no?

 Fair enough

lets talk heterosexuality. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I once dated a female with an extremely similar libido and sexual response cycle. Otherwise I didn't fancy her too much. She was a bit dull, I hated her friends, and lets just say she wasn't on the Deans list. But we had simultaneous orgasms "like in the movies" I wrote in my journal at the time. At 21 that seemed profound enough to really try to stay with this girl. Reading my old journal got me thinking just how much movies affected my expectations about sex, well into adulthood.

As a former college RA and current high school teacher I've dealt with lots of self diagnosed Asbergers cases. Diagnosing a chum online seems a pretty questionable task, even with the best intentions.

I feel like we would need to learn about/hear from crosscultural adoptees to really talk about this?

Well, my crackerasscracker family has two adopted cousins, one Mexican. She defenitly went through several super-embracing-Mexicanosity periods throughout her life. She once told me even as a little girl, before she knew she was.adopted, she knew she was different and never felt right singing Danny Boy with our clan.

What do you HATE about the EU?

I may be going a little meta here, but what I really hate about the EU is that since the announcement that only the PT, TCW, Rebels, the OT, and the ST count, there are people that continue to even have a conversation about the 300 books, 100 video games, and 5000 comics that are all now just a pile of professional fan fic.

 When was that announced?

I'm also not clear on your point. If an executive at Disney says they don't count, people should suddenly pretend that novels they've loved for decades never existed?

Oddly enough, the conversation about being born gay is one I've had with some of my own gay friends.  I have had some pretty shady gay friends on FB that preach vehemently that it is fact.

I did my own research and found that the truth is scientists do not have 100% proof that this is true.  The believe it to be the case but cannot nail down the gene's or proteins they believe to be responsible for being born gay.  They are still searching.

My FB friend called me a slew of horrible names before defriending me because he felt I was just trying to be mean towards gays.

For what it's worth, can anyone pinpoint the gene that makes someone hetero? Is that really the standard you're holding it too? Where's the 100% scientific consensus on that?

I'm not a geneticist, but homosexuality is rampant in the animal kingdom. Do we assume that a dude sheep that does another dude sheep chose that, or was influenced too much by media? Just trying to make his parents mad?

...

and just so I understand this. You made a gay friend on FB, who you then badgered about your belief that he wasn't born gay, and he's the shady one? Really?

Wish there hadn't been two random black people in the background of one scene.

So Disney made another cracker-as-cracker movie, all white folks having a good time. But they insert two black people into the back of one crowd shot. This instantly makes me think two things.

  • Cracker-ass-cracker Disney plainly knows this is a cracker-ass-cracker movie, and they think throwing in these two colored folks make it all ok.
  • In this fictional world black people plainly exist, which just draws attention to the fact they don't even speak and all the characters who even get a close-up are more cracker-ass-crackers.

Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist "church"  has died.

I wonder if there will protests at his funeral, as payback?

Its hard for me to imagine someone who opposed Fred Phelps has enough venom in their hearts to actually do that. It takes a LOT of hate to do that. Like, more hate than blood. Most people just don't have that much.

What actor/actress would you like to see in new Star Wars Movies?
Time

aflip said:

Original actors only in the lead spots, please. No generic 2000's actors, thank you. We don't need generation facebook dweebs like that Hayden Christiansen buttwipe ruining any other Star Wars films. OK?  BTW, Leia is WAY sexier than that generic Padme'...Leia has more attitude and would be  better in bed. But if you like cold fish..well, Padme' for you.

 Stay classy San Diego.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I feel so sad watching this:

Star Wars Ep. VII's FX need to be made this way. It's just real and shows human behind it.  We need SFX, not VFX.

But maybe the channel is posting these for a reason?

Atleast I can hope...

Let's be honest here. Real models are unsurpassed by CGI when it comes to reproducing stationary environment, buildings, space ships, etc. But when it comes to reproducing creatures, puppet based SFX just suck compared to CGI. CGI can reproduce more natural behaviour and motion of a creature. In the end they both look fake.

I just don't see the reason in investing great amount of time, effort and money in making a stop-motion SFX with a puppet. Especially when it usually look very unnatural. The way to solve this is either putting a guy into a costume or using CGI.

Go watch "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" or "Pan's Labyrinth" and tell me that Watto looks more realistic than the characters in those film.

And you repeat the common misunderstanding that good CGI doesn't take time, effort, and money. Do you have any idea how much they spent on The Hulk in Avengers? In British pounds, it's buttloads.

As I hate the whole PT-spawned notion that only certain genetic supermen get to have an afterlife, I hope Episode VII -- or any of the sequels, really -- clearly establishes that everyone -- be they Jedi or not, Force-sensitive or not -- gets to survive death as spirits in the Force.

I'm not sure that concept is in the PT at all.

Really, all we get is that Qui Gon learned to be a ghost. Where other peoples souls/whatever go after death isn't touched on.

I mean, if that's your reading (which I dont think has much evidence behind it), then the OT supports it just as much.

TCW makes it clear that Maul's tattoos are NOT Sith tattoos. I love how this proves Legacy wrong.

I'm still clinging to my initial position from when I saw TPM that those weren't tattoos, just his species's markings.

Getting elaborate tattoos seems kind of uncool.

  • PALPY: What did you do this weekend Maul?
  • MAUL: Spent 23 hours in a tattoo parlor my lord. Only three weeks to go and these dope sleeves will be done. Then we shall have our revenge.

The New Generation of Star Wars Fans

I got a lotta hope about the Next Generation. Look at merchandise. I was at Disneyland, and during the entire trips saw two pieces of PT merch. LEGO Star Wars shwag is almost totally OT. Angry Birds Star Wars merch is almost totally OT. Fisher Price Star Wars merch is heavily OT. In all of these cases I'll add "with the notable exeption of Darth Maul."

People complain that Maul should have been the villain throughout the PT, but if he was, Lucas would have totally mishandled him. "Killing" Maul in Episode 1 was the best thing that could have happened to the character.

I don't think Lucas would have mishandled him. ANYTHING other than looking awesome, flipping, killing and dying would have ruined him.
