All Things Star Trek
Time

My coworker, who was once finance manager to the Prime Minister of New Guinea, told me, without ever referencing Star Trek, the first ever decent defense of the Prime Directive.

The people of New Guinea were told the value of a Western style education. so villages would save up to send one bright young man out to get an education, then to send money back to the village.

These young men would leave school brilliant, but unable to do anything in the largely non-industrial country. Consequently, to save face and repay their village, they mainly turned to crime.

A whole sub class of young, educated criminals infested every city, where previously urban crime was almost non-existant.

Can anyone do impressions of any of the following? Let me know, I might have a neat little role for you if you're interested.

  • James Mason
  • Sean Connery
  • Liam Neeson
  • John Huston
  • Richard Burton
  • John Hurt
  • Max Von Sydow
  • Jean Reno
  • Vincent Price
  • Boris Karloff
  • Christopher Lee
  • Andre the Giant
  • Peter Ustinov

Sorry I missed this. I can do Max Von Sydow and Christopher Lee if I get the right material. I can sort of do a Sean Connery but not I can't shushtain the effect.

 Congrats. You just got cast.

But for reals, if you'd like to be on the show,  PM me your email and we'll do a test run and find a part for you. Always can use a Von Sydow or Lee :)

The Standalone Star Wars Films
Time

Here's a summary of a  fan-fic I outlined a while back. At the time I was considering it for an audio-drama.

BACKSTORY:

An indeterminate time befor "Star Wars." A terrorist attack kills a class of Jedi Padawans, only four survive. Three, deeply damaged emotionally, take bloody vengeance on the terrorists, are expelled from the order, go bad, and fly off to a backwater corner of the galaxy to carve themselves out a little power and wealth. One survivor stays and becomes a Jedi.

The three outlaw ex-Padawans do all sorts of bad stuff. This ends when their leader, the most bloodthirsty crazy of them, gets pregnant. The love she feels for her offspring snaps her out of the darkside madness and she goes into hiding with her child.

THE STORY:
On a little planet of nothing but tiny archipelagos and sea monsters, a teenager and his/her mother live a simply life of isolation. One day while the child is out fishing or something, the mother gets kidnapped and their island basically nuked.

The child (Lets car her/him Jo) finds a spaceship hidden in a cave, along with her mother's old valet droid, now slightly insane from being looked in a closet for 15 years. She goes off to find her mother and meets up with the Jedi survivor.

The character twist is this. The Jedi (lets call him Jack) is a piss poor Jedi, reckless and impatient and not that strong in the Force,  because he's never really gotten over the terrorist attack. Jo has all the virtues of a great Jedi, but is not Force sensitive, partly due to the massive emotional scars her mother has.

Jo, Jack, and CrazyDroid have to infiltrate the Bad Jedi Fortress, which in contrast to the Empire, is a dank jungle protected by legions of aliens the Bad Jedi types have convinced that they are gods. There's a spaceship chase through superhuge trees

On this adventure Jo meets the bad Jedi that's her father. He says "I want you to know that I am your father." and she can say "Yeah. I more or less figured that out by now." This Bad Jedi spent 15 years looking for his offspring, and is disgusted she doesn't feel the force.

Eventually, the weakest Bad Jedi tires of all the fighting and released his hold over the native's minds. This brings the climax to a lightsaber fight between Jack and the remaining Bad Daddy Jedi, and Jo trying to rescue her mother from a burning and collapsing temple. Jo finally feels the Force when she hears her mother 'calling' to her.

Good triumphs. Jo declines to go learn to be a Jedi because there's rebuilding that needs to be done with her mom.  THE END

Im hoping to give them a little more than that.

Right now I'm thinking we do an hour on basics...

What is a montage. What is editing. The 180 degree rule. Look at how a standard talking scene is edited.

Then compare Birth of a Nation, Psycho shower scene, The Chinese Connection Car Chase, Jurassic Park T-Rex chase, The Matrix as different ways editing effects thing. Maybe have them tick off the number of cuts in each sequence.

Second hour is about film history and genre. Basically just watching clips identifying Noir, the adventure serial, more Hitchcock, Casablanca (OR COURSE!) The American Musical, American Western, Spaggetti Western, some Kubrik, some Star Wars.

Still just thinking out loud.

I would seriously caution you against showing anything about Birth of a Nation.   I am sure the film can be very educational in regards to learning about film.   But showing any of that film to highschool students is asking for trouble.   You might also want to be careful inregards to showing high school students r-rated scenes.  You never know how parents and those above you might act.

Good idea about Birth of a Nation. I'll just skip ahead to Battleship Potemkin inventing montage. No time to really explain context.

They will need permission slips from parents, but I wont be showing anything with sex in it. Violence is always way more acceptable than the act of love in America.

Well it's the same creative team behind the show so I'm sure in time we'll be seeing a lot more female characters. Don't forget there's a second main female cast member in the form of the ship's pilot.

You can see a bit more of her in the 30 second version of the trailer.

I know, and trying not to poo-poo it too much.

But Pink armor? Really? :-P

Back on topic hopefully .....  I just had my first "check" and it was clean.  Colon cancer runs in my family and I have Diverticulosis so this was certainly good news.  I get a 5 year break before the next one so I just gotta remember to keep a good fiber intake and to stay properly hydrated.

:)

Diverticulosis is the most hardcore bowel issue to suffer from. You're in good company.

Photoshop request
Time

I could really use a little favor if anyone has photoshop and a couple minutes.

My computer is not available, and I dont have PS or anything on my work computer. Could anyone take this photo of a lute, and colorize it gold? Nothing fancy or metallic (unless you feel like it) just a quick Colorize to a golden hue? I post an "award" for the cast of TheTableRound.com every episode, and forgot to make one for today.
