The Enderverse (WAS: Finally! Ender's Game emerges from Development Hell!)
Time

For any Ender fans out there, Corey Olsen, aka The Tolkien Professor held an online class about "Ender's Game." The three classes are up as videos or as mp3s.

Olsen is a great thinker and communicator, and the class really gets into the book (ignoring Card's ickyness, the movie, and the crappy sequals).

Blu-Ray Of Unaltered Original Trilogy Rumour

I agree with Tyrphanax 100%.  I just want the movies I saw as a kid.  The one that made me beg my parents to dig my brother's old action figures out of the closet and let me have my own adventures.  Had I been a little older, I would have begged my parents for a laserdisc player to see them in better quality than the old releases that sat on the shelves of my local mom and pop video store.

If Lucas would have just given us a choice, then most of the hard feelings would have gone away.  He didn't for whatever reason.  But now we have the chance to have a high quality release of the OOT.  Something I though would never happen unless Lucas was dead.

Adywan's Star Wars is a nice variant, but not the Star Wars I and many more will look at the definitive version 20, 30, 100 years down the line.

I want the OUT on BluRay just as much as anyone of you. But let's not let nostalgia delude us. .. Just by that alone SW:R is superior regardless of popular opinion.

"let us not be deluded" "regardless of popular opinion" "empirically" "objectively"

The way you talk, I get this picture of a little kid with his dad's coffee mug playing 'teacher.'

It's cute.

When the Death Star fires at the MonCalamari ship, it always bothered me that the beam didn't just punch right through like it was made of paper and keep going.  It can destroy a whole planet, so a ship shouldn't have stopped it...  Maybe it could even take out another ship(s) in the background.

This is a good one. I've always thought the same, myself.

I believe the official explanation is that the second Death Star had a variable energy output so they could dial it down to destroy a ship, or dial it up to destroy a planet.

Something about that explanation just never sat right with me.

Why not? It doesn't make sense to use the full power of the superlaser just to blow up something as tiny as a capital ship. Reducing the power level in exchange for a faster rate of fire not only makes sense, but would also help explain why the Death Star in Star Wars spent 30 minutes traveling around Yavin to to get in range of the Rebel base instead of blowing up Yavin and then blowing up the Rebel base two minutes later.

Why not?  Well because the only "official" explanation would be whatever is in the movie in the first place and not some fan-boy EU crap.  The emperor says it's "fully armed and operational," and nobody says anything different.  What you say makes 100% sense, but once the ship explodes the beam would have gone through.  Visually it would be a much more dramatic demonstration of the beam's supposed power.

The official explanation IS the movie.

The Death Star can blow up a planet. It can also blow up a ship. This is totally clear in the film. It requires no further exposition in the film, nor any outside discussion.

YOU made up a rule "once the ship explodes the beam would have gone through" that doesn't fit with what's in the film.  The film is not in error.

If we watch them in order... ...
Time

If we watch the movies in #1-#6 order, what doesn't make sense?

When TPM makes a big deal about R2 and Threepio meeting. If that was the first film, there'd be no reason to even show that dialogue.

Jabba in TPM. Without prior knowledge, it seems that big worm dude is the mayor or something. County racing commissioner? The owner of the track? Why is he there?

In AOTC all the lil younglings are wearing blast helmets and fighting remotes. Three movies later ObiWan has that exact equipment on the Falcon. How did that happen?

I'm actually doing something like this, although nostalgia, not authenticity is the goal. It's a present for my sister.

Working to collect late 80s commercials right now, and the old "move of the week" bumpers, local news promos.

Anyone have ideas where the commercial breaks would be?

I'm wishy washy on what source to use. I'm thinking Harmy's DeSpecialized, then just autocropping it to TV shape.

What is the worst line in the Prequel Trilogy?
Time

imperialscum said:

"From my point of view the Jedi are evil"

Crap dialogue and crap acting.

That is quite the worst line yes but not for the reasons stated above.

The reason is that it makes it look like the dark side makes one stupid rather than evil. He knew too well Palpatine was the evil Sith who tried to take over the Republic (after all he personally admitted it to him before he went to rely this news to Windu). So after he turned (for the selfish reason to save his wife, NOT because he thought the Jedi were trying to stage a coup) he suddenly forgot all that.

And here is how it should have been... He traded the fall of Republic (helped a criminal, ie Palpatine) for his wife which is an evil thing. In order to protect himself from a persecution he should have willingly try to get rid of the Jedi.

I sometimes feel between that line, and the "I hate yooooouuuu!" that they were going for an "Anakin is now completely batshit insane" vibe, but never really committing.

I'll say again, I hope they don't just shoehorn in every character from the OT.

I like Lawson, I like Wedge. I don't need him in an adventure 30 years later.

If Mon Mothma is still hanging around, that's worse world-shrinking that all the trips to Tatooine.

Damn SpiderMan 2 didn't make a lick of sense.

SPOILERS

How did Harry not know his dad had a degenerative disease when they used it in OSCORP PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS!!?!

How did Harry, who plainly owned the entire company outright, get totally removed from authority without any kind of process?

Why didn't Spidey donate his fricking blood??? In a controlled medical environment, Harry wouldn't have become the Green Goblin.

Why did this movie INSTANTLY reverse the emotional ending of the previous movie? ASM1 ends "We can be together." ASM2 starts- "We can't be together!"

How did Peter's dad build a super secret laboratory without his billionaire boss finding out? Who paid for it?!?

Was Gwen REALLY the only person who "knew" how to turn on the power plant? She hit a giant red button that said 'power on.'

If you want the most bang for your buck, Dark Horse reprinted the entire Marvel Run in Omnibus form.

The only downside with all the collected reprints is, you don't get the goofy ads or letters column. It's fun to read what fans had to say back then.

Oh man.  That looks like the way to go.  Should have it ordered by the end of the day.  Thanks.

I found a site where someone scanned a bunch of pages.  No kidding on the readers' thoughts.  What a trip.

I got that one. It and the next volume are the most... 'pure' being all written before ESB came out.

Lucasfilm clarifies the future of the EU

Anchorhead,

I loved those comics as a kid. Before VCRs, I read and reread the adaptation of Star Wars hundreds of times.

I still say "LO! The Moons of Yavin!" when the planet appears on the screen.

Compared to your digest copy in the link, I had the extra large versions as a kid. They must have looked comical in my little hands.

You gotta wonder if there's gonna be a huge backlash to all of this. As noted earlier in the thread, a lot of fans on fb, tfn and elsewhere are pretty pissed about this already. I can't say I blame them.

Where was this backlash when Lucas blatantly contradicted the EU with the PT? Why does Abrams and the ST receive so much scorn when Lucas gets off scot-free without so much as a slap on the wrist?

These fans are all double-standardizing, cognitive dissonant @$$#%!&$, and they deserve to have their insular bubble burst.

Lucas got off scott free because Star Wars is HIS. Even without it being spelled out, everyone knew the movies were more important than ancillary media.

^That is much better.

If Batman has to look more bat-like why doesn't he wear dark brown.

Batman should wear dark blue and grey and have a brassy coloured utility belt. The blacksuit is another thing I haven't enjoyed since Keaton.

I didnt mind the black suit, as long as the yellow circle and belt were there. Without it, I just didn't like it.

The yellow circle made no sense. It's like having a target to shoot at!!

I think someone made a retro-excuse that he had a target on his chest because that's where he had the most armor.

I however don't need an excuse. I don't mind the "S" standing for Superman, or Batman having a cool logo, or Wolverine in yellow spandex.
