Bill Maher. I liked his movie "Religulous", I like his TV show sometimes, but I saw his most recent stand-up special and it was way too crazy-guy-spouting-conspiracy-theories-on-the-street-corner for me.

yeah,  I don't like Maher all that much anymore.  He comes across as someone who is bigoted against religious people.

Well, the man is plainly and outspokenly against the whole idea of religion as a phenomenon. Is it possible to hold that view and not be 'bigoted against religious people'?

"clone wars"=PT for me
Time

I'm currently of the opinion that the "Clone Wars" show is all the PT needed to be.

As a television series, it's automatically a different animal, and doesn't easily compare to the OT. Apples and oranges, so it avoids the unfavorable comparison the PT has going for it.

I don't need every single aspect of Anakin's and Obi's life explained. Anakin's a Jedi. Obi's his mentor. He has a secret wife. Perfect... that sets up the OT all I need.

Palpatine is Chancellor AND the Big Secret Bad Guy?! Whoa!!!! I don't need to know how Palpy got elected.

I think the show, for what it is, has succeeded at its aims far better than the PT ever did. If we didn't have the PT movies, and just this show, I bet we'd all absolutely love it and say "Great job Lucas! Too bad this isn't a trilogy of movies!"

Washington (CNN) -- A federal court ruled Friday that the evidence supporting an alleged causal link between autism and a mercury-containing preservative in vaccines is unpersuasive, and that the families of children diagnosed with autism are not entitled to compensation.

It wouldn't surprise me. Pharmaceutical companies would do anything to make a quick buck.

Cause nothing's quicker or easier than decades of development, years of clinical trials, and the millions and millions of dollars spent to achieve FDA approval.

I'm sure Big Pharma is just swimming in the money they make off somehow giving kids autism by a completely undetectable (and statistically insignificantly success rate) method through the moderatly inexpensive basic vaccination series.

There are also connections between the unfilmed Dune (developed by director Alejandro Jodorowsky), Star Wars and Alien...

The project was sabotaged in Hollywood. It was French and not American. Its message was not "enough Hollywood". There were intrigues, plundering. The story-board circulated among all the large studios. Later, the visual aspect of Star Wars resembled our style. To make Alien, they invited Moebius, Foss, Giger, O'Bannon, etc. The project announced to American the possibility of carrying out science fiction films to large spectacle and out of the scientific rigour of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

http://www.duneinfo.com/unseen/jodorowsky.asp

Jodorowsky is a damn loon, and his film would have been pretencious trash. The Lynch Dune, flawed as it is, is infinitly better than Jodorowsky on his best day.

"The visual aspects of Star Wars resembled our style" is vague, unprovable, and for my money nonsense.

I'm curious why David Bowie isn't #10 on your list.

Because after listening to "Paralyzer" 3 times, you get a little board. But when you listen to another song then you realize how much you miss it.

Oh, ok.  I thought you were ranking your favorites, not the order you listen.

Btw, if you listen to "Paralyzer" 6 times, do you get a big board?

Wait... when YOU list your favorites you dont feel the need to listen to them fully, in order, as you do it!!?

That's why I don't do Top Ten favorite movies. It would take all weekend!

Movie Adaptations
Time

I really liked the book "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and it's sequels (hey, I work at a middle school).

Now there's a movie coming out, and while the trailers look faithful, I can't imagine it can capture the feeling of the book.

NO SPOILERS, but the book is the diary of a little kid. He's a little bastard with zero empathy or understanding of other people, but because the book is from his point of view, it's kind of charming because you see everything he does from his kid-logic viewpoint and how he actually doesn't realize what a bastard he is.

The movie though, with it's omniscient camera, is either going to have to change him fundamentally, or make a movie about a really really dislikeable kid.

It got me thinking about adaptations, and which have the most challenges, and which have it easy, and which are faithful, and which totally miss the point.

One that I thought of was "Count of Monte Christo" and how SPOILER ALERT in the book it's not clear who the count is, or what characters know who he is or not. But in the movie, with actors and closeups of reactions it's harder to pull that off, so even though the most recent adaptation was marginally faithful to the book, in one fundamental way the narrative was completely changed.
