Should Jacen, Jaina, and Mara be in the newer films?

Not only I'm pleased the EU will not be used in the new movies (they can keep some planets, even some secondary characters if they want to, I would not mind. After all they also bought the rights of the EU...)

I don't know.  A clean break is better. Using some would leave people wondering what counts and what doesn't.

DC Comics just did that, with a huge REBOOT only lots of things were still the same, but somethings weren't and lots didn't fit and no one knew what counted and what didn't. For example, there have no only been two Robins, but Batman has at least five Ex-Robins running around.

I dont say anything, but I'm going to explode if I don't let off some steam.

The logical fallacy commonly called CHERRY PICKING does not mean simply  selecting data that proves your point. Saying "I got death threats, look at all these horrible death threats" is NOT cherry picking.

Cherry Picking means to selecting data that proves your point and ignoring data, usually a lot of data, that is contradictory. The claim of cherry picking doesn't even make sense rhetorically.

The statement "Threats of violence and rape are the only messages on twitter" would be a claim that would be supported by a cherry picking tactic.

Watching these assholes, I'm less upset by them being assholes, and more upset by their abuse of academic language.

The Feminist Frequency lady uses extremely academic style language 90% of the time, but the dudes who try to tear her down try to use it, and it's like a monkey trying to build a rocketship after looking at a drawing of one. There might be certain similarities, but it doesn't fly.

... focuses on too menial menial of issues for the amount of funding she received;... ...

I keep seeing this complaint, and can't comprehend it. I try to imagine some other example where this would make sense and can't.

"The school tried to raise $500 in a bake sale, and raised $900! What a scam!"

"He received a great deal of grant money for his car-that-can-run-on-jam. Why isn't he also making a car-that-can-run-on-peanut-butter? What a thief!"

"What?! You received an enormous  outpouring on public monetary support for your geology research, plainly showing an enormous demand for that type of work! How dare you sir!"

When I say "fan", I am talking about people who are real fans, not just people who like Star Wars. Practically everyone likes Star Wars, but not everyone is a fan. The fan community is so much larger than the OT-diehards on this forum who see Star Wars as being only the three original movies.

Every person that I know personally who I would classify as being a Star Wars fan has read at least one book in the post-ROTJ EU continuity. People know and like these characters. For example, in my local 501st Garrison alone, there is soon to be a third Mara Jade costumer.

Star Wars fans tend to buy not only books but a whole lot of other merchandise, and that has provided for a a significant portion of Lucasfilm's revenue in-between the movies.
That is why I say that I think that Lucasfilm would be disrespectful to the fans if they just ditched the post-ROTJ EU continuity outright.

Could you give us a clearer rubric of what makes people a real fan? I'd hate to think I'm associating with fake fans. Perhaps a questionnaire, or a quiz. Is it a binary REAL/FAKE or can their be a sliding scale, perhaps 1-5? Does the thickness of the books they read matter? The Battle-Star Medic books were kind of thin. Do they count as much as "I, Jedi?"

Please let us know. Your categorizing of Star Wars enthusiasts is vital to the ongoing health of the fandom.

Yeah I know but I figure for new fans I would handle the war the way the war was handled in B5 or the time war on Doctor Who and treat it like something that wasn't seen on screen so viewers who didn't see DS9 wouldn't get lost but what we see would agree with what happened on Ds9 so older fans wouldn't feel left out either.

I misunderstood. Figured you meant something more gimmicky... like LOST with the constant flashbacks.

This is a fun game if you ask me.

 It is. :)

I'm actually going to my own Star Wars fanfic pitch I have in the back of my main notebook (where I keep doodles of superhero costume redeisgns, fan fic ideas, and hearts with my and Jennifer Connely's initials in them).

I'm typing it up to share.

Hey let's play a little game.  Let's say you were asked to come up with an idea and setting for a twenty odd episode per season new series of Star Trek to be aired in 2016. What would you characters, setting, and story be.  it can be anything as long as it would work in the Tv and not movie format.  let's see what we can come up with:)

Episodes would be split between exploring, dealing with character's personal issues left over from the war, finding peaceful solutions to the problems of the Gamma quadrant, and dealing with the rising tensions with the Romulans.

Well that is my pitch, what do you think?

I like the focus on Diplomacy. Not sure the flashback structure would work for me as a fan. The Dominion War was also, 15 years of television ago.

I think that a decision to rub out the existence of Mara Jade, Jacen, Jaina, Anakin Solo and Ben Skywalker would be a giant middle-finger to the Star Wars fan community.

Making a movie that is based on stories millions and millions and millions of people have never read could be seen as a 'giant middle-finger' to the lovers of Star Wars moives.

OR we could just say it's a creative choice to try and make the best movie, and accept that nothing will please everyone.

Idea: a "Jekyll and Hyde" Musical
Time

Thinking of piecing together a decent hybrid version of the musical Jekyll and Hyde.

The only OFFICIAL release stars David Hasselhoff, and while he’s not TERRIBLE, he’d be a fine mid-sized market theater singing star, or even a star in a less dynamic role, as the only Broadway Jekyll captured on film he falls short of the other greats who’ve done the part.

There’s a bootleg of the film productions ‘dress rehersal’ that was done with star Rob Evan. It’s missing scenes, and the video quality is poor, but Evan is an amazing singer and actor.

Planning to slice out at least ALL of Hasselhoff’s singing, replacing it with segments of Evan. Might keep sequences where Hoff is only one of a big ensemble just for the higher video quality.

This wont be seamless or invisible, but it should be more enjoyable to watch.

Shameful video game confessions thread
Time

Hows this for shameful.

I'm freaking brilliant. I have a BA, three Science certificates, am a decorated debater, mock-statesman, award winning author, and five time salesman of the month at Blockbuster video.

But when it was popular, I never ONCE won a game of "Words With Friends." Not once. Literally dozens and dozens of games. Not one. Not against my little cousins, not against old high school buddies, not against foreign people I befriended on Facebook just to play "Words with Friends" with. Not a single time.

The shame haunts me.

Doctor Who
Time

I've read several complaints that the aliens "The Silence" are somehow derivative of the "Gentlemen" from that awesome nontalking episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Makes me want to kick someone.

Did someone of note say this first, and others are copying? Or are there just that many people who see a monster in a suit and start twitching.

  • Gentleman=Exaggerated rictus grins
  • Silence=no mouth
  • Gentlemen=Constantly moving in weird, mime like ways
  • Silence=Usually perfectly still
  • Gentleman=Suits, with pocket square evoke elegance.
  • Silence=Suits evoke MiB, faceless bureaucracy
  • Gentleman=Brothers to Nosfeatu
  • Silence=Basically a Gray Alien in a suit.

Ew, dubs.

 I support dubs.

No matter what, if the film isn't your language, you're going to lose something.

Subtitles means your eyes are going to constantly NOT be on the picture. This fundamentally changes the vieweing experience, especially for films as gorgeous as Kurosawa's.

Dubs are equally flawed, but in a different way. I'd rather not be distracted from the image when watching an epic, visually stunning Kurosawa movie.

For something like Ingmar Berman, I'll take the subtitltes, because there's so little speaking in something like "Persona."

But both are still a compromise.
