It’s definitely good to see you’re alive and well, AlaskanSandman!!

Dazman has already said hello in this thread, but since he didn’t toot his own horn I’ll go ahead and do it! Have you seen his incredible work on fixing up shots and adding VFX throughout Phantom Menace?
https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Phantom-Menace-Improved-Edition-10-years-on-the-forum-edit-Released/id/91544/page/2#1485011

A lot of his work overlaps with yours, such as city lights on the Naboo and Tatooine planets in space, nicer lightsabers, and so on. From his OP, it namely boasts hundreds of cuts, tens of added slight sharpening effects to blurry shots, about 75 Audition audio edits, about 170 After Effect shots, and new short shots from upscaled dvd footage, so far too much to enumerate, but from a casual watch I thought his work did a fantastic job at revitalizing the film after two decades!

While I can’t speak for anyone else, I definitely think the best TPM cut would be one that consolidates all of the visual work both you and Dazman have put in; is there any chance you’ve considered collaborating on that front?

I have not atm. Maybe after I finish my own work. I know there was another user named Snooker who had done some good work too like removing Yoda from TPM.
Right now im largely focusing on my own edit as I have a couple distinct story beats that are different, like the assault on Naboo and Escape from Naboo to specifically give my edit its own unique arch. Other things have been changed in my edit like Palpatine killing the younglings instead of Anakin, as this makes Obiwan’s accusation to Padame, questionable. Specially from Anakin’s pov, as Anakin know’s its not true. Palpatine frames Anakin essentially, and Obiwan bites the bait.
I don’t mind people using similar ideas, but don’t want to get bogged down in other peoples “vision’s” while trying to get out my own.

Can this fix bad hdr grades like evil dead 1 and 2?

It depends all on the colorist and his monitor setup. The program which is used is secondary. What does it help when you have the best tools but don’t know how to use them?

That’s what practice is for. Again, taste will play a big factor along with skill. It is art after all

Davinci Resolve added HDR since I last color corrected the Prequels. So this is a quick test of the HDR with out any color corrections. Hdr gives better control and more range to manipulate the different dark and bright areas of the image. Just playing around for now till I get a new drive.

Im sure it could, but as pointed out, its up to the person doing the work. This is something that comes up in color grading too. Personal taste will always come into things too. That being said, who ever does it should focus most on not losing details in the bright and dark areas as you work to add more depth. Itd be very easy to just boost all the dark ends and lose detail in the shadow areas. Its worth exploring though if you are interested, and you can always do a couple test to compare which gave you the better results. Davinci Resolve is free and so is their HDR feature. You do have to set the settings for the proper output and should make sure your monitor is calibrated. If you’re doing just for you, don’t worry about what everyone else thinks and just go with what feels good to you. If you would like to share then of course, do a couple samples and see what people like best 😃

I think one of the biggest things is getting good 3d models, even just for space scenes. I would like models for the ships on Naboo and to do an aerial battle over Naboo. This is one of the more ambitious scenes/shots I would like to pull off. This would be when the Federation is first attacking Naboo, not the climax.

Yeahh, getting the models is always the toughest part. I think Battlefront 2 has some good models for the Naboo Starfighters though (the game’s a treasure trove of high quality Star Wars models.

And maaan I can’t get over how good the trailer looks! I really hope you’re able to get them through. Adding the Order 66 scene from Obi-Wan Kenobi is an interesting idea, wonder how that’ll pan out. I did see someone doing a mockup of it in the radical redux thread.

The HDR control also looks great so far!

Thank you! and yea Battle Front 2 is where I was going for models when I last worked on them. Seems its still the best go to

Looks pretty good!

Im liking the HDR control. Though you have to edit each camera angle independently for the best results, I think its worth the time and effort. Somethings would need to be done after the vfx were added though, otherwise the added Vfx wont be in HDR. So ill have to really consider my workflow for the best results, but it should mean that I don’t have to redo all those Vfx shots (provided they’re still salvageable from old drive). Which would save sometime.

Edit- The Trailer I posted has had no HDR work. Just the test footage I posted does.

A lot of the compositing looks better than the compositing in the original movie. Very well done!

Thank you! Im really hoping i can isolate the cgi characters and stuff to improve their compositing into the scenes along with any new elements im including. Some of this like the optical flares is stuff i always planned to get done, but took me a while to get all the new software i wanted. Really want this not to scream fan edit

Which software are you using?

For anyone doing there own edits and interested. The software being used is.
After Effects 2020
Cinema 4d https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiLO-QoOrlc&t=84s
Video Copilots - Sabers, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reSXGxkyr0k
Orb, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iT12Q9O-Q30
Optical Flares, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSv6aIpYhDQ
Elements 3d, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kThfcP_1TCM
Twitch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rc0dNDzbuM&t=32s
Red Giant - Vfx suite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXRdBtIcK5c

Its all listed at the bottom of the Op for any looking to get into their own editing. Not listed there but I used Davinci Resolve for editing and color correcting.

No need to apologize. Happy to hear you´re well. You don´t owe anything to people in this forum.

Thank you and I figured most would be understanding but It is still unfortunate to have happen. A lot of people were going through more though so Im still grateful and looking forward to getting cracking at it again. The upgrades on the computer end will certainly help speed up production

Why don’t you do what adywan did and do a fundraiser for the equipment you need etc. also are you going to do a hdr grade if not because you don’t have the tech raise the money for that as well.

Tempting, but Ady has more time, experience and a larger following. Also, that puts me under more of a time constraint to get things done for the investors, and with the way the world has been so unpredictable. I would rather shoulder the responsibility myself

Maybe adywan can use his clout to help get your project fully realized.

Nah, Im sure Ady has enough work ahead of him than to be worrying about my project. My project isn’t as ambitious as his is either, so im not sure it justifies it as much. Ady did new props, miniatures, and even filmed actors on set. If I ever get to that point then Ill consider it more

Honestly wish I could offer help in some regards, I do have some experience using Blender, though mostly in animation and the like, and I’d still consider myself fairly noobish.

I suffered a computer crash during the pandemic that I didn’t have the available funds to worry about at the time. I eventually got a workable computer but not a good computer, just something I could go online with. Not anything that could do any real work though. I eventually was able to buy the parts to start building a better computer that was more than fast enough to handle everything I was doing. I still need to get some extra storage space in the next week or two, but after that I should be able to get back to work. The biggest thing to see still is if my old hard drive is still accessible as a slave to retrieve my old work files so I don’t have to start from scratch again. If I do have to its not the worse thing in the world for me as at least the work flow should go much faster than before. Im pretty sure the hard drive should be ok though.
I apologize for the absence but needed to focus my time and energy elsewhere during the pandemic and couldn’t justify getting a suped up computer at the time. I hope everyone else is doing good and I appreciate those who have shown interest in my edits. Soon as I can get some new content posted I absolutely will.

Your fanedit sounds great but could you go one step beyond if possible do two major things with this update the cgi with modern cgi and if possible update the lightsabers to look the way they do in the sequel trilogy because I think the effect is perfected in the sequel films it’s too bad the original trilogy lightsabers can’t be updated in that way. 😦

Somethings I will be trying to update as much as possible. As far as the Lightsabers, I am updating somethings to look more similar while one thing for sure, I am not. I am trying to add as much light cast from the sabers as I can, but as the old scenes were not filmed with an actual light up saber prop, there is only so much you can do in post. As for what im not changing to match, is the core of the saber. I don’t like the way it looks in Mandalorian when they swing the saber. This is more accurate to how a lit object being swung would look, I just don’t like it. I like the intense white core from the Og and prequel films that leaves a white streak when swung.

The only reason I asked about updating the cgi is things unreal engine 5 etc. really blew my mind and also the fan film vader when Vader goes to Naboo outside the palace of naboo looked better than it did in both ep 1 and 2. so yeah that made me sad lucas didn’t make the prequels later than he did in someways.

Yea I’ve seen some great stuff between Blender and the Unreal Engine but I don’t want to oversell myself just yet with no time or experience with them at the moment. I certainly would like to and I picked up the other stuff rather quick but we’ll see 😃

I hope you will be able to know use one or both of them one day for the prequels because it would be such a huge improvement for them this is what I also wish could be done for the good original trilogy cgi scenes. like cloud city the good parts of mos esley being expanded the Death Star assault using the original cuts song for jabba’s palace but just updating sly snootles and the return of the Jedi victory celebration keep the trash monster blinking I think it wasn’t a bad addition and remove the rest. maybe keep the Ewoks blinking I don’t know how I feel about that change.

I wouldn’t ask another editor to pick it up because it’s such a huge undertaking, but you’re right that we’re nearing consumer-available photorealism - especially of environments - with Unreal 5. Some of the environments they use in The Volume for filming the live-action TV shows use Unreal 5. I’d always swing in this direction, but maybe in the next breather when the dust settles on the current movies and TV shows, we should collectively try to deep dive and upskill in some of the new technologies. Unreal and Blender are free until you start making money off them, which is an awesome model for us editors.

I think a team working together would have a better chance of completing such an awesome endeavor but am certainly interested in such a project.

I think many of us have been worried this project would not be continuing but I’m so glad it is! Of course sorting out the other stuff in life when needed is more important, so you don’t owe us anything. Your work has been influential already as you are credited in at least one of the TMP edits. 😉

Let’s hope you can retrieve your old files!

Thank you very much! I appreciate the the kind words and support very much and I look forward to getting cracking on it again. Honestly I think the hardest thing to redo if I had to would be all the saber and blaster rotoscoping haha but Im hopeful that won’t be necessary and even if it is, it should go much quicker than before.

Welcome back!

Thank you very much! Before the crash i had acquired a lot of new programs that were speeding up production but was still running on a slow computer not up to minimum specs for After Effects. So these recent hardware upgrades along with the software I acquired will really help speed things up. Everyone’s responses have been very encouraging and I appreciate the support greatly!

This is from someone with more time and experience and even then its not up to full par. Its pretty darn good though. You have to consider though that the prequels actually used a lot of miniatures and real footage composited together. Vfx teams can also spend over a year on a shot that’s less than a minute in length. Its not as easy as we would like yet.

Comparison between original edit and slowed down edit.

The wide shot of Theed from a far will need to be redone though as the time stretches fudges my mask keyframes and precomposing it causes the effect to become see through for some reason even though opacity is to 100%. Idk why so im just going to redo it, its a short scene anyways.

Ok mate you asked for it :p
From your latest tease, I personally think the added flames on Naboo (e.g… behind Qui-Gon) are moving too fast.

Those are all real fires filmed on green screen, so the physics are proper. They’re not simulated flames. So slowing it down might not look right. Itll also mess up the frame rate

Just checked out your trailer. Very nice work there. But i have to agree that the flames are moving too fast. Also the smoke is too. Using real effects doesn’t always give you the real world physics. This is true when you are using effects that are from a small fire to create an effect of a large one. You have to slow down the fire element fx footage to give the scale of a large fire.

In this shot, the smoke needs to be slowed down to around 60% of the original speed, maybe 50%. The fire, to at least 50%, but probably closer to 40-30% to give the scale required. Doing this won’t effect the frame rate of your composition. You can use after effects built in time stretch feature, with blending set to pixel motion, to apply that to the layers your fire / smoke elements are on, without effecting the compositions , or any of the other layers, framerate. I prefer to use the Twixtor Pro plugin as this gives much better results. Fire can be a pain to slow down as you can get blending effect problems. Artefacts can be painted or masked out for the most part. Which is why i prefer using something like twixtor because it gives you more control over the results. You can get great results with smoke when slowed down though. You don’t get the same sort of artefacts and the results are almost always perfect.

Now, in the following shot, the smoke is way too fast to give the appearance of the scale you need. This smoke should be slowed down to about 20-30% of the original speed. I’d say its closer to 20% but working with things like this you just can’t know for sure without actually testing out the speed on the source files. A lot of this is done by eye so it’s a lot of trial and error.

Here’s a quick test to show how slowing down the smoke and fire can give the effect of scale you need. Obviously i had to slow the whole first shot down because i don’t have the separate elements and there are a few glitches with the fire in the second one because its reacting to the background elements that wouldn’t be there when treating them separately. For both shots the smoke/ fire was slowed to 30% of the original speed using twixtor. Youtube’s compression messed up the smoothness of the result causing the smoke in the first shot to look a little jerky. it isnt like that in the file i rendered, so thats not an effect of slowing it down with the plugin.

Something i did notice, however, in the trailer i downloaded from your googledrive. The framerate is set to 24fps. It should be 23.976 when working with the blu-rays. This has caused some duplicate frames. Is your project set to 24fps or 23.976?

Ok, just got twixtor. Not really sure how to fully use this or what all settings you used so just going to set speed to 30.% and see how it works. Hopefully i don’t have to precompose for supercomp to show it right, but if so all good. Just means ill have to redo the compositing.

Just checked out your trailer. Very nice work there.

Hey, thankyou very much for your time and input! The project files are at 23.976, i just render the trailers at 24fps. Great to know about slowing down the clips. I worried i would get jumpy elements slowing them down, especially since when i use rotobrush it wants the framerates matching. Frame blending i didn’t think would solve any jumpiness. Also good to know about the elements timing vs physics and scale. I definitely see the difference in the clip you provided (which, thank you for. Especially with how busy you are) and will have to look into that plugin and try it out. Ill apply the percentages you provided and definitely get those fixed then. Once again, i greatly appreciate the input. Still feel very noobish but really want these to be the best they can and cant express enough the gratitude for the advice or critiques to get these there.

Always great to see someone with real evident expertise can and is giving advices like that. Thank you adywan. Best feedback possible for this great project.

I thought i was on the wrong feed when i saw his response haha def made my day. The technical explanation and work around though was super helpful and his example looks great in getting across what he and you guys were saying. I actually kinda like the slowdown to the camera also on the shot of Theed from the cliffs.
