Info Wanted: Question about 1980 uncut Empire
Time
What I find increasingly frustrating about these claims is that the person making the claim will never admit even the possibility of being wrong. Therefore, trying to reason with them becomes pointless. They only seek validation, not the truth.

70mm prints were different from 35mm prints. I thought this was common knowledge by now. But the differences were relatively minor, nothing like what has been described in this thread. There were some different wipes, a different shot/cut in the bacta scene, the establishing shot of the rebel fleet at the end, the holographic Emperor doesn't fade in, and some other things that I forget. The list can be found in the Film Score Monthly magazine that is being discussed. 70mm versions had a completely different sound mix as well, which mostly appears in the Special Edition. Many of the sound mix differences are also heard in the 1980 "Adventures of Luke Skywalker: Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back" album.

I saw TESB exclusively in 70mm during its original theatrical run. It contained none of the grandiose claims in this thread. I didn't even see the 35mm version until it came out on home video.

The truth is memories are often deceptive. To this day, I have a memory of seeing an AT-ST step on an Ewok in ROTJ. Does that mean it happened? No, and I can admit that my memory is wrong.

So it was either in an early version, or was in a trailer or something somewhere, but I still haven't found it, or even another mention of it *anywhere*.

Laserman, the "So's life" dialog exchange between Han and Luke is in the novelization. That doesn't necessarily have to mean that you read the novel; however, you could have been influenced by someone who had, perhaps unintentionally or unknowingly.

Good to see this project progressing, MoveAlong. Your SOSW is one of my favorite fan-made DVD projects to date, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

Are you going to stick with the "Story of The Empire Strikes Back" title? When the album was originally released in 1980, it was titled "The Adventures of Luke Skywalker Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back." It was re-titled as "The Story of The Empire Strikes Back" when it was rereleased in 1983--for conformity's sake I assume. I think using the original title would be more in line with the theme of these projects, but that's just my opinion. What do you think?

I guess that's a good reason to upgrade!

At the time I started, I did have a DL burner, or at least access to one. But I don't at this time. The SL version will not take long at all. I already have a SL sized MPEG2 file ready to import into DVD-Lab Pro. I'll just throw some static menus on there and be done with it. I should be able to get it posted soon after the DL is finished. As for quality, I think the difference will be negligible, at least on my low end TV. There may be a difference on a higher end monitor though.

Yes, it's finally complete and currently being posted to a.b.dvd. However, at 6.2 GB including PAR2's it's going to take 2 or 3 days with my modest upload speed. I'll let everyone know when it's finished and provide an NZB at that point.

I've also decided to go ahead with a single layer version--mainly because I don't have a DL burner. If there is interest in that, it will get posted as well.

I have a question to all - what's the best app and news server to pull this down? I'm hoping that someone seeds as a torrent, but just in case that doesn't happen I'd like to know if there are any tricks with the newsgroups. I've never personally had too much luck with free servers, etc. before.

Thanks.
There are several apps to choose from and it really comes down to personal choice. I use Xnews myself; Grabit and Agent are popular too. There are numerous servers out there. I find the best deal is with Astraweb. Anyway, my buddy Russs15 has some great tips here and here.

I'm not going to torrent it myself, but if someone else wants to that's fine.

Intersting how the LD version looks so close to VHS quality. I guess those old LDs weren't as great as I thought they were. I always assumed LDs were nere DVD quality.

Yes, the quality of the Rad laserdisc is really not that great. I am really excited to have the new HD source. By the way radchris, I believe you need to turn on your Private Messages in your profile. I think they are off by default.

radchris - I PM'd you back. I'm not sure if you got it.

Anyway, regarding availability, it will be posted to the newsgroups when completed. Probably alt.binaries.dvd. From there it's on its own.

If anyone is interested, here is a small (8MB) DivX of the main menu.

And here are some comparison shots between my original laserdisc sourced DVD and the new HD sourced DVD. As you can see there is no comparison.

I'm almost finished with the new DVD using the HD file as the source. It will be dual layer to preserve the best possible quality, anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. I may do a bare bones single layer version as well, I haven't decided.

Here are some sample menu shots. The menus are full motion with audio.

There ARE elements in the 6-track that do not exist in the Dolby Stereo version so I assume were not in the original 4-track either. I can only suppose that additional SFX were added during the 70mm dubbing session.

I've given the 70mm recordings a couple of listens and I did not hear any real differences. Can you elaborate as to what you have found? I'd be very interested to know.

The "original crawl" on the new DVD is NOT the original crawl! Screenshot inside!
Time
Something that may be of interest in all of this is that the same starfield was used for the crawl on all three films. Of course, this excludes the original pre-Episode IV starfield, which is clearly different.

I'm with the general consensus that the starfield was changed when 'Episode IV' was added. I believe that when they created the new crawl, they used the starfield they had just done for The Empire Strikes Back, which was subsequently used again for Return of the Jedi. All of this makes the original crawl that much more unique.
