It's very simple really. These discs were created by transferring the original magnetic tracks with the master audio untouched. Usually for film prints the mix would be tweaked, EQ'd and fit onto the format. Then each individual theater had their own standards or lack of standards for proper audio presentation. It's still this way today, in fact IMO even more so. Despite having lossless audio, I can't find a theater with decent sound anymore. There's more quality at an art house with a horribly battered print of For a Few Dollars More that had the mono track going nuts with uncontrollable volume spikes!

I'll have to dig up a VCR and look at all my tapes for the titles. IIRC for most of the series waves from the '93 set on  they were all letterboxed.

Thanks Captain Solo. I never realized that some theaters were so badly setup for sound.

Getting back to Bond, I've watched the first 2 on bluray. Now, I don't have the best tv, but damn! they really did a good job with what were then 45 year old negatives that were only scanned at 4k.

Are these restorations considered average, or were Lowry setting a standard with those?

I think these are original mixes, done off of master tapes. I guess just recorded straight to the video master at 16/44.1 PCM.  You hear things you wouldn't even theatrically. Like all of the background sound design.

Can you elaborate on that a little? My brain has a bit of difficulty grasping that my home setup could pick up sounds that would not have been heard in a theater.

I saw Skyfall the other day. I wouldn't say it's the "best Bond ever", but it was good. It'll be interesting to see where it leads (no spoilers).

Still haven't watched Quantum of Solace, though.

I had also not seen Quantum of Solace, and also have the same opinion for Skyfall. Hmmm.... Maybe that's why we both think it's not the greatest Bond (like most of the planet). We haven't seen QoS (which was bad according to reputable sources), so for us, we don't see how much better SF is compared to it.

Also, I"ve ordered the Blu's for the first 5 Connery Bond's. I'll let you guy know how they look/sound once I have them. Yes, I know the original mono are in lossy for the Blu's, but that they've used uncompressed audio for their 5.1. Sheesh, I hate that.

I thought it was hilarious when during the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray "war", people were saying, "Which format will porn choose?" Those people completely neglected two things:

1. Porn choosing VHS in the 80s mattered because you couldn't stream porn with two clicks of a button on your computer.

2. Because of said ease of availability of porn on the web, only morons buy porn in the present day.

My local Fry's has an entire aisle dedicated to morons then. ;)

Speaking of porn, does anyone think Disney will go after the company that made that SW porno that came out this year?

Wouldn't this technically count as a parody, thus out of reach of Disney?

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

Another recommendation for Verbatim here as well.

I used to use Memorex, but the layer break gave me too many problems. Basically, as the player started approaching the data near the layer break, it would start to stutter until it wasn't reading any data anymore. I created a lot of coasters before I abandoned them.

Since I've used Verbatim, I've only created one coaster and that was my fault really for using the wrong settings.

Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Released)
Time

No release of this film has ever been perfect on disc (note also that this film has only ever been release legitimately on DVD and Bluray in Japan; any other disc version you have seen is a bootleg).

Before continuing, a few historical notes on this film.

The movie is a 2 hour version of the original 36 episode tv series. After the series had wrapped up in 1982-1983, it was decided to do a film version for release in 1984.

In 1987, an OVA call Macross Flashback 2012 was produced. It was a mix of old and new footage. The beginning of it was new animation set to about 90 seconds of the song "An Angel's Paints". The last 3 minutes are also new footage and set to the rest of  this song. The middle part of the OVA is a mix of TV series footage (originally animated on 16mm film) and movie footage (originally animated on 35mm film). The whole OVA was mastered on video (ie not film) at 29,97 fps. The original film elements for the new footage is considered lost and only the video master remains.

During the 90's, the film was released on laser disc with some of the original footage of Flashback 2012 inserted at the end of the movie and called Macross Do You Remember Love Perfect Edition.

In 2000, it was released for the first time on DVD. The version was the same as the Perfect Edition. Curiously, it was encoded rather bizarrely. It was encoded at 29,97 fps interlaced, but the disc was also progressively authored. The viewing result on an HDTV was a mess if you used a table top DVD player. At the time, only a PS2 could play it well.

In 2008, it was released again, this time in a 3 disc edition, as djmasturbeat said. Disc 2 was the original theatrical version without the flashback 2012 footage. This was not remastered and the video is grainy. Disc 3 is bonus content. Finally, disc one was our promised “HD Remastered” version. This version was the same as the perfect edition, except it was encoded at 24 fps progressive. The video was considered quite grainy for a remastered version. Also, there are 2 video glitches. During the climax, as Bodoza’s ship begins to self-destruct, for a split second, you see footage from earlier in the film. A similar glitch also occurs later in the film, except the interval is shorter (I’ve never noticed this second glitch myself). The glitches are part of the master used for the dvd.

Finally, the bluray, as is already known, has a much better picture, but is edited/censored in a couple of scenes. Also, some footage is considered slightly more blurry than others. Often one cut will be sharp, the next blurry, the next again sharp, all during the same scene sequence. This seems to be part of the original 35mm film and how they filmed it. There is no workaround for this. Also, the flashback 2012 footage used on disc 1, also looks softer since it comes from video. Disc 2 is the "theatrical version", but it also contains the edited/censored scenes. Disc 3 is bonus content, including Flashback 2012 upscaled to 1080p.

Like I said, this film has had an interesting release in Japan.

They're available for download here.

The bottom part of the back is a little snarky, but I couldn't help myself. ;-) I'm willing to upload blanks for others to modify if there is demand.

Doubleofivek, I hate to be anal about this, but you have a typo in your ep 5 summary.

"the evil Darth Vader ures young Skywalker into a trap."

Really? I'm intrigued. I wish I could pick up the BD set, but a) I don't have a bd burner, b) I have a bandwidth cap that would force me to take me a long time to dl them.

But I did dl the DVD V3. How much did I enjoy them? Let's just say I had a smile on my face the whole time, something no other dvd release (legit or otherwise) has been able to do. I thank you wholeheartedly.
