Help: looking for... JC's Prince of Darkness? and possible ideas for other projects.

Check this out, MrBrown:

Some guy did the same thing using the Ultimate Edition DVDs.

Yeah, nice, but the German languages Ultimate Final Cut is for sale officially in Austria.

I'm sure there's lots of things that are for sale 'officially' in Austria. I fail to see the significance.

A complete Dawn of the Dead would be a real beast to put together. I think the music is drastically different between the various cuts. I know the Zombi version has all that Goblin music at the end, which is radically different than what Romero went with.

Oh yeah. The 'Extended Mall Hours' composite illustrates just how varied the audio was between sources and there's sadly not much that can be done about it. The end result will always be a bastard offspring.

Here's an easy project: WILD AT HEART. Just need somebody with some skills to upscale (and fps adjust) two shots so they can replace the censored versions on the BD releases. Osbserve:

I have the uncut Australian 'Magna Pacific' 16x9 PAL DVD and would be happy to supply the necessary shots.

Another one: THEY LIVE. Sync up the lossless audio from the (upscaled) UK BD to the (high def) picture from the Italian (?) BD.

So if someone has some crazy suggestion they want to see done, now's probably a good time ;-)

I haven't seen any of the V2.0 workprints as I don't think I'd be qualified to make critical assessments of your work (ie. I'm easily pleased) and I really wanna watch it all in one go.

...but I do recall in V1.0 that in the "Look sir, droids" scene, the trooper on the dewback was stationary whereas he originally had a bit of movement to him (or, at least, to his staff).

I guess I'm just wondering if you were able to do anything with that at all this time around?

Sorry if this has been up before but will it be available with "lossless" audio?

From what I gather, lossless audio track/s may be offered as a separate download which the user can then mux with the video themselves.

And there's also the possibility that lossless audio will be included on a future BD-25 version, should one eventuate...

I'm also assuming that, if I download the MKV, I could demux the streams and make my own barebones Blu Ray that I can live with until the fancy one comes out, and #2 and #3 would have the same video quality.

Only if harmy encodes the mkv with black bars so that its fits the 16:9 BD requisite format. Otherwise you'll have to re-encode.

Harmy said:

I thought about it. Possibly but I'm not decided yet. Maybe, similarly to what I have planned for foreign dubs, it could be available as a separate download that anyone can mux in themselves.

Separate, uncompessed audio sounds like a great idea.

Gotta say, I like the idea of a BD25. I don't have a burner (yet) but my media player plays blu ray folders and isos.

Would this mean we might get some uncompressed audio options?

I might start budgeting for a burner now so I can help others out if/when the time comes...

P.S. I don't post on here often but I'm subscribed to this thread and read every post. Version 2.0 is really looking spectacular. Keep up the great work, Harmy!

Well, it took me a while (strangely, THE TERMINATOR is not yet available on blu in Australia so I had to import it) but I've now synced up DJ's mono track and the whole thing works great.

I wish they'd include these original uncompressed mono mixes by default. Breaks my heart when I hear half-arsed remixes on old faves like this and DIRTY HARRY.

Thank you, DJ.

The Blu was the uncut Australian version (Hence the MM2 title card) in remarkably clear video. The only big problem with the disc was the fact that the color timing was completely lost and the desert became clear with big blue skies instead of the dark browns of a wasteland. The original US DVD has the proper color.

The 5.1 remix is only 640 kbp/s and there is no theatrical audio. The commentary was a nice touch though.

Yeah, its like they thought the desert looked too red and tried to dial it down.

I work in the Australian outback and, believe me, it really does look like the dirt came from Mars.

How does a theater not know you need legal permission to show a movie?

I dunno!

They did - and still do - these marathons several times a year, playing only movies in current release (since cinemas do not own prints and must return them after their run) and they never had a problem nor reason, I suppose, to suspect there would be one.

"They" being Greater Union - arguably the biggest theatre chain in the southern hemisphere at the time. I would assume they weren't amateurs and generally aware of their rights and obligations. I'd hesitate to call them stupid and/or crooked. There were 3 or 4 programs to choose from that night and only one was the SW spec. ed. trilogy so its not like they were outright exploiting the situation. Admission, as I recall, was little more than the regular ticket price for one movie. I seriously doubt it would have even sold out - based on the late/long hours and the lack of people at the ESB and ROTJ '97 premiere screenings at the same cinema (I recall them being largely empty).

Perhaps the objection was to playing all 3 films back-to-back, thereby creating an unsanctioned 'event' of sorts that violated Lucasfilm's terms? Maybe Lucasfilm didn't really have a leg to stand on but the threat of legal action or other consequences were enough to frighten Greater Union off?

Deja vu!

In the mid-90's, I used to regularly attend midnight movie marathons at my local cineplex here in Western Australia. They were always held the night before a public holiday and would involve a screening of 3 current movies, back-to-back, starting at midnight (giving us plenty of pre-drinking time) and finishing at dawn. There would usually be a choice of 3 different programs, too, so we used to screen-hop if we didn't like any particular line-up.

Anyway, it was 1997 and I guess the 'Special Editions' had all come out and done their thing. Sometime after there was a public holiday and yet another movie marathon. One of the programs was to be the Star Wars trilogy! The ads were in that weekend's papers and we were all quite keen to go (me especially, since a trilogy screening in '83 or '84 was how I first got to see EMPIRE). However, when we got to the cinema shortly before midnight on the night, we discovered that the trilogy screening had been cancelled. Why?

George Lucas.

Lucasfilm had found out about the marathon and put the kebosh on it. Needless to say, alotta folk were pretty bummed about the whole thing.

Does anyone know if the new transfer still digitally removes the reflection between Indy and the snake?

Y'know, I just had a look and I think its there. Its extremely subtle though - and I've forgotten just how noticeable it was to begin with! Its been so long since I saw any version prior to the DVD release. I wonder if I still have my widescreen VHS handy...

Spielberg's recently gone on record saying he plans to never tweak any of his movies again (even planning to leave in visible wires in 1941) so it is encouraging.

Nice replica! That's even better than The Great Sword.

That's good news on NOTLD. I don't think sharing 25GB (or more) is exactly feasible, however, or I'd be all over it. I don't s'pose you know of any screenshots of the Forgotten Films release lurking about online, do you?

But back to CONAN: unfortunately your audio track(s) can't be synced to the local Aussie version since its the same as the Euro disc, defaults to the censored UK version and uses seamless branching to do so. Looks like I'll have to get the HK release before I can enjoy your efforts in full.

I'm appalled that Fox lazily foisted that censored version upon us, even though there are (laborious) workarounds...

So I've sampled the affected scenes a few times and, I've gotta say, the results are seamless!

Outstanding work, DJ. I am in your debt! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Care to share any anecdotes on how you managed to achieve such a feat?

P.S. I am also interested in your NOTLD project and would love to follow your progress (though I suspect it wouldn't be so easy to share that one).

You know, that is exactly what crossed my mind late last night while working on the score, cant that part of the CD score be laid on top of that audio section or will that not work?

I don't see why not! As long as the CD is from the same recording as the one used in the movie. If that's the case then even if, for some reason, the timing doesn't match perfectly, you should be able to manipulated it slightly (squash/stretch/trim etc) to fit. You could also try de-emphasizing everything but the choir so there's less chance of an echo or volume boost on the common elements.

I think its definitely worth a try! If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Oh, man, but if it does...
