TV version of THE THING (Released)
Time

Apparently the infamous alternate TV version of THE THING (1982) is playing on AMC on the 11th April. Anyone keen on capturing and preserving this bizarre anomally? I know I’d love to see it!

CBS edited 12 minutes from this film for its 1986 network television premiere.

The American syndicated televison version features:
A voiceover for title card reading “Antarctica, 1982”.
A voiceover added and film re-cut introducing each character and providing their back stories.

The version broadcast on television in the eighties ended with a few shots of a dog running, stopping to look around and heading off into the distance, leading the spectator to believe the Thing had survived. Also, the scene where a man’s head tears itself apart from his body, grows legs and eyes and runs off, was cut.

The television broadcast version of The Thing sometimes has an unknown person narrate the beginning of the film. He introduces all of the characters as they appear and gives a brief blurb about their goals/reasons for being there. At the end of the film, the narrator returns once more to deliver a haunting speech, and then a shot of the Huskie running away from the burning base is shown. This version often appears on TNT or TBS. This version also has so much of the gore edited out that originally deleted scenes are used as time fillers to extend existing scenes.

The American syndicated television version has a slightly extended version of the scene where outside in the tractor Macready and Fuchs secretly discuss Blair’s sanity. In the extended version Fuchs remarks that while Blair may be losing his mind he is still a brilliant scientist and his rantings should not be totally dismissed.

P.S. Tried doing a search for “the thing” to see if there were any pre-existing topics but got far too many results and couldn’t find an ‘advanced search’ option. Feel free to merge this with any pre-existing topics, moderator(s).

Thanks for letting us know about the Australian version of The Great Gremlins Adventure ride, and I'll look into it as far as I can. Perhaps someone was smart enough to use their camera back then.

I have a segment from an Australian children's morning television show (circa 1995) where the host goes on the Gremlins ride at Warner Bros Movie World on the Gold Coast. Quality ain't so hot but its still very watchable.

If you're interested in this, gimme a PM and I'll put it online.

This is as good a time as any to ask:

Has anyone documented the rumored alterations/fixes that were made to the movies for the '03 dvd release? The reflection in the snake pit is the only one I know about.

As far as I'm aware the alterations are the digital removal of the glass as you mentioned, the removal of "production equipment" and I've heard the rails that the boulder runs on have also been removed. I also think there might be some sound changes.

I've found it's hard to find a list of the changes because they are few and far between.

I seem to recall some minor changes to the removal of the heart scene in Temple of Doom. But this was done for the home video release not specifically for dvd. Maybe someone else can confirm this?

No, TOD is intact, it was only Raiders that was tweaked, as mentioned above. They are really so invisible that its not even worth noting. The only exception is maybe the cobra reflection--I sort of miss seeing that, but thats the purist in me.

No, the heart removal scene is slightly censored - less than the old video release, but it is definitely shorter than the theatrical. I was disappointed when I saw it.

You're not talking about the UK version are you? That's always been censored to my knowledge. In the US (and down here in Oz) ToD has always remained the same as the theatrical version as far as I know and can tell.

Rolling Thunder (1977) + custom dvd info (Released)
Time
A custom made DVD was uploaded to alt.binaries.midnightmovies just over 3 months ago. While certainly preferable to any VHS version, it was no substitute for an official DVD release. The picture quality was quite soft, the letterboxed image was non-anamorphic, there was a big MGM logo in the corner for the entire duration and it was a PAL->NTSC conversion - though the picture looked a bit squashed so I don't think the guy knew exactly what he was doing.

That said, it was still very watchable.

No, this is a PAL project because i wanted to work with the highest quality picture available (the HD version wasn't available at the time) plus i live in PAL country. Because i will be doing both NTSC & PAL for the DVD i render a PAL master of just the video first and then use Virtualdubmod to then create a NTSC master. All i have to do is resize it to 720x576 and change the framerate to 23.976. Then i just convert the audio from 25fps pitch to 23.976fps pitch using Vegas and that's it.

I think you mean 720x480.

In a movie, when you follow a moving object from shot to shot, the object must always go in the same direction. But here, we have the falcon exiting hyperspace and going from the top to the bottom of the picture, and then in the next shot she goes from the bottom to the top! It puzzles the viewer: did the falcon just turned back?

Think of how many times you've seen a car drive up to and over a camera (bottom to top) and then the shot switches to the reverse angle and the car drives over and away from the camera (top to bottom).

It works there and it works here as well. Because the Falcon is passing underneath the camera, that's where we expect it to emerge from. There's probably some fancy terminology to describe this certain type of screen direction but I'm too drunk to remember and too tired to look it up.

Bottom line: there's nothing wrong with the relationship between those two shots.

Its possible Neil didn't see the notice because he hasn't been following the thread and someone may have tipped him off that his name was included. Whatever. There's no need to be so... scornful.

Ady, I've just rewatched SW:R again and you've actually credited me twice: my old username 'Cashflagg' is on there. For some reason I can no longer log into that account so feel free to jettison that particular credit. I certainly don't deserve the extra billing!

Grabbing it off usenet now. I haven't watched STAR WARS in its entirety for about 7 years so seeing this projected at about 14 feet across should really be something else. Congratulations and thank you to Adywan and everyone else involved.

I'm gonna grab some booze and some munchies then it'll be lights down, curtain up.

Interesting...

Anyway, is anyone able to please set me up with the entire ep I-VI set (minus EMPIRE, which I already have)? I could provide the honorable volunteer with the necessary blanks, replace them, re-imburse them, pay for them in advance (along with postage) via paypal or simply vow to PiF to the next chump that comes along.

Although I have access to usenet, my downloads are limited and the newsgroups seem inundated with inferior rip-offs and/or alternatives so I'd rather do it the old fashioned way.

Any help in this matter would be very much appreciated. Cheers!

Dawn Of The Dead Ultimate Edition Volume 2-UPDATE Discs 1-4 (Released)
Time
I just watched the Blu-Ray of DAWN projected at about 12 feet wide and it looked spectacular. Same transfer done for the Divimax DVD but the increased resolution really brings it all to life with a clarity that puts some big budget movies of its era to shame. And it would seem to be the same story for DAY. I'd pick them up without hesitation.

And while I'm here I may as well inquire as to the status of the two 'ultimate' cuts that are being worked on... I hope they haven't been abandoned!
