THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

This is unlikely but its worth a shot...

Does anyone know of a torrent for the 14GB version of ESB? I had some bad sectors on my harddrive and lost a split second from the file, right during the "I know" scene, and now the movie loses audio sync after that glitch.

If there were a torrent, I could simply redownload the missing 1% or whatever it is I lost, as opposed to the entire 14GB from usenet (if, indeed that is still possible) - which I've downloaded twice now already.

Failing that, would anyone here be willing to create a private torrent just to help me out?

Thanks a bunch.

I did stuff and I left things alone. If you care then you'll find out. I refuse to outline every damn little tiny thing that I did when I friggen just uploaded a super high quality bluray version of this! You people suck

Don't you hate it when people you admire turn out to be, well, less than admirable?

There's an artist's saying: "Do not seek praise, seek criticism". Its an attitude that's supposed to continually improve one's quality of work while maintaining healthy levels of humility and modesty.

When you think about it, its hard to argue against such reasoning.

How's the quality? Does it look like an SD upconversion? Could you possibly post a screenshot (or two)?

It looks OK,but it is a 720p version,damn I was hoping for 1080p LOL.
I would like to do some more comparison to the retail DVD though to see if it is even worth doing anything with.

Well, if its only 720P, you could put it out as a single layer project perhaps? Assuming, of course, that it is a noticeable improvement over the DVD (please, I'm begging you for just one screenshot!).

If you do decide to put it out, there's a custom DVD floating around with multiple soundtrack options that undo the audio tweaks that were made to the MGM versions. You might wanna pinch a track or two from that one.

The Griff,

You wouldn't happen to have or have a line on Return Of The Living Dead in HD would you?

I'm afraid I don't. Its since disappeared from where I found it but after doing some close comparisons, I'm 100% certain it was an SD upconversion of the MGM transfer (only open-matte).

Believe me, I couldn't have been more disappointed.

I'm surprised DJ that you didn't take me up on my offer to mail it to you! It surely would've been there by now.

I don't remember your offer, because if I did I would have certainly taken you up on it,but rapidshare just sux major monkey nuts!

Ahhh... remember how my PMs kept getting cut short? That's probably what happened to my offer.

I'll split it up over a few discs and have it out your way shortly, DJ.

In the meantime, got an ETA on your first AVCHD project?

Also, I noticed in the screens the appearance of grain, which you can see with a number of BD discs, my question is did you add in the grain or was it already there or did it just make it more apparent with the encoding?

Hi. If I may... grain is a natural by product of film. Its usually digitally removed, at the expense of fine detail, from DVDs because its intricate textures present compression problems.

Its often left as is in high definition video because there is both the increased resolution and compression effeciency to deal with it.

You can read more on the subject, and hopefully discover why some 'grain is good' here.

There is a version of the Ghostbusters video where the celebrity voices can be heard in the mix saying "GHOSTBUSTERS!".

I just captured this 'voices' version off digital television in PAL with minimal logos. If anyone is interested in using it for any GHOSTBUSTERS-related project, send me a PM.

Man, what a cheesy song/video.

This is great news!

I hope you plan on doing ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK since the Optimum Blu Ray was a nasty rescale job and the HDTV rip doing the rounds is so much nicer.

And, if you're interested, I can point you towards a nice 1080i .ts source for E.T. - THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, the ORIGINAL unmolested version. The audio is only 2.0 but the DTS track from the DVD syncs up perfectly for the first 85% percent of the movie and then is maybe a frame or two out so some slight resyncing might be necessary there.

At any rate, I look forward to your results!

P.S. Hell yeah, I'm up for THE GATE in high def.

Thanks again Griff, looking forward to any more Evil Dead discs you may receive.

My pleasure.

I'm not, however, on any exclusive recipient list. I contributed to the ED2 set so djsmokingham was nice enough to repay the favour by sending me out a copy (throwing in the ED1 set while he was at it).

I'm afraid that if and when anymore ED-related stuff comes out, I'll have to resort to begging for them along with the rest of you folk.

All I ask is that I'm not forgotten when that time comes!

I did a comparison between the 720p HDTV rip and the Book of the Dead version, here.

Interesting. There's almost no quality difference between the two versions (the HDTV is marginally more detailed); that said, the JPG file sizes do seem a bit low, maybe some detail is lost due to JPG compression?

Wow. I didn't notice how small those files were. I compressed them at about '8' quality in photoshop, which usually comes out alot bigger for pictures of that resolution. Perhaps this was due to the overall lack of detail?

Also, the HDTV rip was originally broadcast in MPEG2 and then downscaled to 720p and recompressed to x264 even before I got my hands on it.

The other thing to consider is that the HDTV version has obviously been DNR'd to hell and back. There's almost no grain to be seen and alot of the fine detail would've been lost in that process.

But, yeah, I'll stick with the DVD version.
