Midichlorians versus Life Day: which is worse (with compliments to Puggo Jar Jar's Yoda) + (you can't say this is just another anti-prequel thread because Life Day is OT material...sort of)

Frink, why do you post such disturbing images? In any case, looking at that picture, you may be right. I change my vote to Life Day song as less distressing.

Honestly, midichlorians are worse. They attempt to justify scientifically what should only be taken as is. As for Life Day, I think a day of celebration is natural to any developing species; once the species develops that to be thankful for, it normally has some happiness, which could lead to celebration. Of course, showing it was completely unnecessary, and, having watched the Holiday Special only once, I think that's how it should stay.

Another related question... what's worse, "Jedi Rocks" or "Ode to Life Day"? That's not easy either.

Sorry but Jedi Rocks is better, not to say that any musical number should have been in ROTJ in the first place, but Carrie Fisher singing...

Info: a Smear-free '93 ?
Time

The sunset does look interesting. You're probably right in saying that they just forgot to put post production coloring on it, which could have been the case in those days.

Looking at your sample, it looks honestly really good, msycamore. Sure it's a tad it soft since it's from laserdisc but that doesn't really show that much. As far as crosstalk, in the clip, I didn't see much, so I, for one, probably wouldn't be bothered by it. Colors do look nice, and it has no clipped whites. Furthermore, the optical grain was nice to see. It looks more natural, as opposed to the more scrubbed look of the GOUT.

Certainly, the quality of this is similar to Arnie d.'s V8 (though that was from the JSC). Speaking of Arnie d., if you really can't live with the crosstalk of this release, he was offering raw X9 captures of the (similarly, smear-free) JSC trilogy to anyone willing to finish it up.

In conclusion, yes, I'd be very interested in you doing this after finishing up on THX.

EDIT: Do you mind kindly uploading a sample of the sunset scene? It looks good, no crosstalk, judging from your sample picture.

1992 VHS release of the OT

Nope, not the same master as the JSC.

It is the same master as the "no shrinking ratio" SWE, though.

Sorry but isn't the JSC and the SWE from the same master, at least for ESB and ROTJ, definitely granted that SW was the newer "no shrinking ratio" master. If this is just about SW then apologies.

I have actually found it on eBay and I'm thinking about buying it - would you guys recommend it ?

The laserdiscs are naturally better, but if you only have VHS then yes I would most certainly recommend it. It's this one right:

Curious about Certain Aspects of My (Primitive) LD to DVD transfers
Time

Hmm... well color me surprised. Thank you Moth3r. I'll start tinkering with my captures I guess.

Thanks for the link as well Moth3r. Looking at it, my Toshiba is the successor to the Toshiba DR410 mentioned on top, so I'm glad to know it's capture card quality as I think they're roughly the same. I didn't need a TV tuner, but some of those extra filtering features do sound nice. It's too bad some of the best ones can go well over $150 used. :-(

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971
Time

I know this may be an obvious question, but after reading this thread, I'm a bit confused. What is the video source for the Banned Bond Criterion DVDs from Demonoid? Is it the better Connery Collection or the Criterion Collection discs? Did FanFiltration ever do a better version?

This is the post that really had me confused:

FanFiltration said:

Here is something I did not consider back when I made the Banned Bond set. The Criterion Collection are in optimal Standard Play - CAV format. This would mean that the prints used on these disks must be preserved in great quality for fans not owning LD players or these sets. I think I remember using the Connery Collection Vol. 1 as my video source for the Banned Bond project.

I didn't see any follow up, confirming which source it was.

If it was the Connery Collection, I was actually just thinking of picking up a cheap Criterion CLV version without the commentary just to approximate the whole Criterion laserdisc experience, including picture quality, as the timing was a bit different and director-approved. However, is it far lesser quality than the CAV version? The above post hinted at this as well.

Furthermore, I also agree with the general sentiments voiced on this thread. The Blu-Rays don't seem true to Bond and not like 60s films. The color timing's different and it's too clean grain-wise. There is such a thing as too invasive a restoration. :-(

I'd be very grateful if anyone could answer, as reading the thread with some posts deleted and most of the pictures gone can get a bit confusing.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

The thing is, in this case I'd actually be more inclined to believe that this isn't the footage from the actual Blu-Rays, as they're snippets from documentaries, so they would probably use the 2004 HD master just as it was, just like Empire of Dreams uses a lot of 97SE footage.

Good point, Harmy... I wouldn't be surprised if LFL did something like that.
