The video footage is exactly as it was in the source

To be honest, watching the DVD, it did seem to me that the brightness was taken down a few notches and there were some compression artifacts (mostly slight blocking). The Revisited footage was not as clean as in the Revisited DVD. I couldn't notice these things on a computer, but once I was watching it on a 58" screen, it became apparent.

It's important to note that the DVD player can indeed factor into how visible these imperfections are. For example, very good OPPO upconverters can highlight flaws that other players don't show. In any case, the quality was still very watchable for me.

(aside from the MF's defense on the Ties as it escaped the Death Star - and I WILL be cutting that in the 1080p version)

You're making an HD version?! Do you plan to work on this this before the sequel edit or afterwards? In any case, I look forward to that scene being cut. As iconic as it is, it does not make sense in the context of your edit and seems to cheery, breaking the really great solemn mood you set after Ben's death. I believe I even pointed this out in my initial review.

Once I get the teaser up, you'll see what I mean

Definitely excited for that teaser.

Star Wars was shot on relatively fine-grain stock; what we're used to seeing is not representative of the negative.

Ah, I see. All right. I didn't know that. Thanks for the info, mverta. :-) Out of curiosity, lack of resolution, crushed blacks and color issues aside, is the 2004 master's smoother look closer to how a film print looks than the grainier LD releases or GOUT?

I don't do any noise reduction or grain removal. I do, however, use tools to recover detail from within grain structure.

Thank god. I can't stand noise reduction. I just didn't know that Star Wars had inherently fine grain.

Doctor Who

I agree with CP3S; the Revived Series sometimes does have its campy moments, which the old series ironically had less of.

In any case, if you want to are interested in Classic Who (1960s-1980s), start with the first episode of the series then jump around however you want. If you are interested in Modern Who (21st Century), then I would recommend starting with the Fifth Series, as said before.

Funny, you should mention that Puggo. Initially I personally wanted to start with Tom Baker, but a friend convinced me to start with the American movie and even lent me his Region 2 copy (wasn't available here at the time)... In any case, I don't recommend that route.

Steve Jobs is dead

It is sad and I hope he rests in peace. He was quite the visionary. I suppose it isn't that shocking, considering his previous health issues and retirement from Apple; still, the world has suffered a great loss. He was the man who managed to market technology like touchscreen pads and touchscreen phones to mass populaces well.
