Great!!! That looks great, TMBTM. The tints give it an otherworldly feel. I'd hardly know the base was B&W if you didn't tell me. The bright blue then red light makes it feel like some harsher decontamination/healing is going on...

Slightly off topic, using tints to colorize does remind me of the Moroder's Cut of Metropolis. Did you use this as an influence?

Info: My attempt at color correcting the GOUT (Outdated thread - though lots of info)

We'll see if I do the Technidisc sometime, I still haven't downloaded that version yet.

Do it, I dare you.

Though, keep in mind, it does have a very Technicolor feel to it; personally, I wouldn't try to stray too far from it. The color also fluctuates from frame to frame quite a bit, I don't know if there's any "cure-all" fix for that sort of thing.

Hmm... a Technicolor correction may be quite interesting. Though it is not as high resolution as the GOUT, there is absolutely none of the bothersome smearing. I would be very interested in such a release since I feel msycamore did a good job capturing it. Furthermore, the Technidisc is much more saturated, unlike the desaturated GOUT.

I'm actualy toying with color correction of deleted scenes for my new edit The War of the stars part2. But i'd like to make NOT a grindhouse edit like the first.

WAR OF THE STARS 2?? That sounds absolutely brilliant. I'll be interested in any alternative cut of ESB: non grindhouse or not. In any case, with that one mention, you've already got me thrilled! :D

So every lines and spot removal tools are welcome. I tried Spotremover for virtualdub, but I'm not a expert and as english is not my first language I have difficulties to understand its subtilities. And the result is not good. At all.

Spotremover is not a partcularly good filter IMO. It seems to be very similar to the DNR used on the GOUT. I tried to pass some aged film through there and it became completely smoothed out: utterly awful looking...

Now, for my edit, I only work in DVD quality with premiere pro. But it was just to show you some preview.

Good job on that color correction! It nearly matches the V3 perfectly. It's far better than mine...

By the way, out of sheer curiosity, did anyone see any of the color-corrected deleted scenes I posted?

I'm happy with any deleted scene improvement.  Please show.

Absolutely. Keep in mind that these are VERY crude and just to show basic color correction. It's not my specialty and my source were 720p AVI files.

Here are the links to the deleted scenes color corrected:

WAMPA SCENES: http://www.multiupload.com/TPUN9S65YK

HAN AND LEIA HALLWAY  SCENE: http://www.multiupload.com/LW8HWVOAVC

LUKE AND LEIA HOTH SCENE: http://www.multiupload.com/QXNVB5AN5W

Unfortnately, the Han and Leia scene is the worst of them all. I only included it if anyone wants to take a look. These are what were on my YouTube channel before FOX went on a viral take-down spree.

Frame rate : 25.000 fps

Thank you.

Echo3 said:

I dont know if it would look bad, but you could just re encode it with handbrake at 24 or 23.97fps, then use TSMuxer to create an AVCHD disc.

Hmm... I'll try this. Thanks for the tip. I had a 25fps thing that I tried adjusting with TSMuxer's frame rate control but it looked awful, producing countless junk frames.

captainsolo said:

The 04 and 99 should share the same video transfer. All of the Legacy Collections re-used the original DVD transfers save for Bride of Frankenstein.

It may be the same video transfer but I believe the Legacy disc allowed a higher bitrate because it have the movie more space than the comparatively cramped '99 disc. For example, Creature From the Black Lagoon is the exact same transfer but because it has an extra GB worth of space on the Legacy Edition, it looks better.

As far as a silent version goes, that's pretty much lost just as the original ending is. I have always wanted Universal to give these films the restoration they deserve, and hopefully that tag ending will finally resurface.

Actually, I watched the Brownlow Documentary with the Dracula DVD and it has a clip from the silent version, so it may have survived. It probably just hasn't been released. The clip looked surprisingly decent quality. I hope it isn't a lost film.

The silent version is much like the original green tinted Frankenstein-lost to the ages.

Hmm... I'd be interested in that as well though it's probably not hard to recreate.

Dracula (1931) (Released)
Time

To anyone interested, the 1080i version is actually on tehparadox as well, so it's not exclusive for Cinemageddon. If anyone finishes downloading it, I'd be curious to know what the frame rate is: 25fps or 23.976fps. I downloaded a 25fps of Frankenstein 1931 and was quite saddened I couldn't play an AVCHD of it.

By the way, to my eyes, it seems the '04 wins a tad bit over the '99 release. The '04 had less compression artifacts when viewed under a good upconverter. The audio situation is however rather unfortunate. Anyone else agree/seeing this?

On a side note, as a "minor" fan of the Universal Classics, does anyone have a silent version of this, complete with intertitles? It's my understanding that this came out in both silent and sound versions. I'd be curious to see the silent one... that is, if any copies still exist. Has there ever been some sort of bootleg of this... even a rudimentary telecine on VHS?

The "I met a famous person" thread
Time

I've seen Ludacris in Costco. I didn't talk to him. He was apparently marketing some sort of alcohol. I also saw Anne Hathaway at a Starbucks. I didn't want to bother her, so I didn't ask for an autograph or anything.

Last but not least, I met George Lucas... he signed my issue of Star Wars #1. He was all right when I met him. This was around the time of a renewed interest in Star Wars when ROTS came out....

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

It was an honor to review this workprint. I know I haven’t been a Despecialized tester since ESB, but this 40 minute workprint blew me away. Do forgive me if anything I say here has already been pointed out. The workprint starts on a very good note with sharp and well defined title cards. The crawl here seems much better than the 1.0 crawl and more vivid. The color of it seems spot on. During the opening shots, the starfield is very visible which is awesome, considering how obscured they were in the 2004 master. I was surprised you were able to make that many stars visible.

When I got to the Tantive IV halls, I was thoroughly impressed. Though I’d seen screenshots of the color correction, it didn’t strike me just how good they were until I saw the CC in motion. You_Too and Harmy, you guys rock in color correction! You’ve somehow restored that good old fashioned 1970s film look. It doesn’t seem bland like the GOUT but more like a vivid version of the earlier releases… if that makes any sense. In any case, it seemed to resemble screenshots from the IB print. I felt the original’s color correction did not go far enough and this certainly did. I noticed there was no red push like the GOUT and instead a slight green cast, which makes it more resemble any film cels I’ve seen of 70mm prints. Anyway, the Tantive IV halls were in stark, Kubrick-ian white and all the soldiers had spot on flesh tones: very natural-looking. I also enjoyed the color of C3PO and R2D2. I was very impressed by the amount you retrieved from the crushed blacks. It’s pretty astounding. Thank you for having no lobster man this time around! It’s worth noting that the color correction did not interfere with the laserblasts in any way. I did notice that the black widescreen bars occasionally changed color, hopefully you’ve resolved this.

One slight think I noticed was a matte box (?) in the initial shot as the escape pod as it was launched out of the Tantive IV. It seemed like an artifact of undercontrasting in order to retrieve crushed blacks.  I was once again impressed as Vader confronted Leia since his helmet wasn’t at all obscured.

The Tattoine sands look great: not pinkish or reddish by any means; they are more natural than I’ve seen them in quite a while. I’m also really digging the canyon scene! It’s not too dark but not too bright. It feels like you referenced the video of the Senator IB screening, which is great. In any case, it was a good balance and I feel that you really nailed just how it should be. I noticed a very, very vague distortion behind the left trooper in the “Look Sir, Droids” scene, possibly to remove a Dewback. It didn’t bother me.

The droid selling scene was wonderful. I really loved the color of Luke’s hair and skin! In some scenes, I noticed that without the overcontrasting typical to the ’04 master, some instances of slight DVNR appeared to be visible. This is certainly no fault of yours; I just felt like mentioning it. The sunset was nice: not over contrasted and light enough to be like a real sunset. When we get to Ben’s hut, the exterior shot looks good, and, inside, less contrast reveals so much more detail.

I must say my favorite thing about this workprint, even better than the color correction, was the lightsaber! It looked so old-fashioned like in DJ’s Project Blu. I was blown away by how you put the original ’77 lightsaber (I assume) back in. The hand-animation makes it very simplistic but adds a whole great feel to it. The color of the lightsaber is spot on. Some close ups of Luke look a tad desaturated. This may be because of color inconsistencies in the ’97 restoration, passed to the ’04 master.

Just when I thought the color correction could not impress any more, I saw: THE DEATH STAR! You nailed the grey-green look of the Death Star. It’s now exactly like in the 70mm scans. Flesh tones look great and the uniforms are a good grey/brown. I’m impressed how there is no blue cast whatsoever. Red skin tones do not pervade this scene. The daylight scenes on Tattoine afterwards looked fine. Thank you for that humorous ending, BTW J.

Harmy, you’ve truly blown me away with  this one. It’s unbelievable better than V1 and I can’t wait to test more. I'm very sorry if I've repeated anything that's already been said. As some of you may or may not know, I was on a hiatus for awhile so I haven't had time to catch up on the thread.

Info Wanted: Giorgio Moroder presents "Metropolis" - is it any good? (lots of info)
Time

Ooh! I love this version of Metropolis. Sorry but ever since I saw it, it has a special place in my heart for its wonderful corniness. Freddie Mercury and Pat Benetar on the same soundtrack is great. Forgive me but what I have to say is mostly a reiteration of what has been said:

I tend to watch Redux more often than the Blu-Ray. It's a fan recreation using a modern restoration, so it looks gorgeous. Some of the color effects look slightly better than what Moroder could achieve, but it blends with the higher quality remastered video. The audio is all right on this one... nothing special. There's a watermark at the bottom if you watch it with underscan but it doesn't detract from the viewing experience. From what I understand, the fan who made this version put quite a bit of effort into it. It's a very excellent result and should be used for general viewing (comparable to a reconstruction like Despecialized). This is available on TEHPARADOX by the way in two places.

The Blu-Ray does have its merits. It is completely faithful to what was seen back in the 1980's: warts and all. Moroder could not do a thorough picture/visual restoration and many details are obscured by high contrast and not so good film materials. A 35mm print is the best source for this. I'm glad it appeared to be a relatively straight transfer: no DVNR or anything... I respect Kino's decision in this matter. There's less picture info on the sides than Redux I believe. This would be equivalent to having a straight 35mm transfer of SW (if there were no other film materials surviving).

It is worth saying that those are the only versions I feel are necessary. All the VHS and LD boots are basically far lower quality versions of the Blu-Ray. They're not different AFAIK. The reconstruction called Metropolis: Morodered on Preserv was unfortunately, IMHO, not as good as Redux. It attempted to make a version like the Moroder's Cut but was culled from a lower quality restoration and wasn't as impressive.... Sorry.

Anyway, that's just my two cents about everything.

Did anyone ever get a chance to watch this? I'd be happy to hand this concept over to someone with better editing skills than myself.

However, the edit is complete and IMHO fixes Episode 1 on a far larger scale than anything else I've seen.

I did get a chance to watch this. Sorry I haven't written a full review. This was a pretty good in my opinion. I really enjoyed V2, and V3 was a distinct improvement. The reorganized climax and additional trims worked well. Good job on this! It's also short enough that I wouldn't mind watching it often. This is caught in a tie with L8wrtr's edit for my go-to TPM Edit.

^How sad is that?

Ha! Very sad. It's too bad Lucas put so much faith in the character.

By removing the Gungans, and leaving Jar Jar on Coruscant, the focus shifts to the Jedi, and particularly Obi Wan, who starts as a Padawan who disagrees with his master's ideals, and progresses to a Jedi Knight who upholds those ideals.

The edit worked well in this respect. The way the edit is structured: Jar-Jar doesn't do much. I feel that it is mainly Obi-Wan's story, with the others being secondary characters. All in all, this was a very good exercise in shifting things narratively. It does go to show that TPM is indeed very salvageable: after all, it's the least CGI-infested of the prequels. In any case, I hope people check out this edit.

I can't find anything either. Perhaps Jaws 3-D flopped so they didn't release any further titles.

I assume this is what happened. On a side note, I just noticed someone is making a (2D) fan edit of Jaws 3 on fanedit.org, for those interested.

How about Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn?

Added to the list.

...I think it was sourced from a VHS *at least* a generation removed from the original VHD...a direct rip of the VHD would be great.

On the topic of VHDs, does anyone here happen to actually have a VHD player or a way to rip them?
