Dvd cropping

Really wish that there could be a nice transfer of 35mm print of Goldeneye, but seems somewhat cost-prohibitive. I remember though there was some talk about overlaying the UE HDTV master to the heavily DNR'ed but uncropped BD.

Might wanna put the title "Goldeneye" in your thread title by the way.

Agree with this. I like LTK all right especially the ending scene but definitely think its not that Bond-ish. Really like TLD, just for Dalton's best performance (and since I think he's the best Bond, therefore, the single best Bond performance). That feels like the last of the old kind of tone to me. Pity it didn't have stronger villains and loses focus during the Third Act.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you describing the infamous 1995(?) boxed set laserdisc? I've not seen it personally, but I recall complaints about it. It's strange since concurrent releases of the same line were not subjected to the same restoration (ie. the amazing 1995 CAV Cinderella with the RKO logo restored).

kk650's Miscellaneous Regraded Films (Released)

Is there anything to suggest that the regraded Alien and YOLT are closer to the theatrical colours than the bluray or are they just timed to match older home video releases?

I believe Alien and YOLT are corrected for a natural-looking palette more than anything. kk650 makes the off-white whites white again. Thus, they are technically correct and not tinted.

YOLT unfortunately doesn't have its technicolor back yet but at least its better than both the DVD and BD. There's no pink tint, which makes flesh tones and whites weird.

kk650's Miscellaneous Regraded Films (Released)
Time

kk650, tehparadox and former ot.com member, has created regraded versions of the following films that were handled badly color-timing wise. I highly recommend these releases, as they are very nicely encoded and re-color-timed. They’re quite worth the download.

Alien

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded Alien: Theatrical Cut

Size: 7.60 GB

Video: 1920x824 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English DTS 5.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

Okay, AluminumFalcon requested a version of Alien regraded to remove the green tint throughout the whole film so I was happy to oblige! 😃

AluminumFalcon also requested a version of Aliens regraded to remove the green tint running throughout the whole of that film as well so a regraded version of Aliens will be appearing in the next day or two.

I hope you enjoy what i´ve done here. Please post back here with feedback of what you think of this release after you check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Blade Runner

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded Blade Runner: The Final Cut

Size: 14.6 GB

Video: 1920x1080 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby Digital 5.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

Okay, marlec, Makalala, AJ87 and origami all requested a version of Blade Runner regraded to remove the green tint throughout the whole film so I was happy to oblige! 😃

I also encoded this release with the same dimentions as the blu-ray so anybody wanting to make an avchd of this to fit on a bd-25 for example shouldn´t have any problems.

I hope you enjoy what i´ve done here. Please post back here with feedback of what you think of this release after you check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Last Mohicans

Available in both a 7.59 GB version and a superior 15.4 GB version.

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded The Last of the Mohicans: Director’s Definitive Cut

Video: 1920x804 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby DTS 5.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

Okay, geon47 requested a version of The Last of the Mohicans regraded to remove the strong yellow tint running throughout the whole film.

The blu-ray transfer also has many scenes which are impossible to make out due to the transfer being far too dark and murky, so in this regraded version the brightness and contrast has also been corrected so its now possible to see what´s going on in darker scenes, of which there are many throughout the film, like you were able to in previous home releases of this great film.

On the blu-ray, outdoor scenes in direct sunlight very often look dark and overcast, much like the transfer of fellowship of the ring extended edition blu-ray, only in this case much worse. The daylight scenes in this regraded version look correctly exposed.

By sheer coincidence, I had already created a version fixing the numerous problems that the blu-ray transfer has when geon47 requested this, its been sitting on my harddisk for quite some time while I focused on finishing the Star Wars Semi-Specialised Editions, so here it is, finally seeing the light.

I hope you enjoy what i´ve done here. Please post back here with feedback of what you think of this release after you check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

You Only Live Twice

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded James Bond: You Only Live Twice

Size: 7.69 GB

Video: 1920x824 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English DTS 5.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

The official blu-ray release of You Only Live Twice has a strong pink tint that wasn´t in previous releases and has been added across the whole film so I have removed it with this release, returning the film back to its correct colours.

I hope you enjoy what i´ve done here. Please post back here with feedback of what you think of this release after you check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Might I also add that kk650 is a really nice guy. 😃 If there’s a movie that you think has been really screwed up color-timing wise, you can politely suggest it to him via PM on tehparadox.

kk650's Lord of the Rings: Regraded (Released)
Time

kk650, tehparadox and former ot.com member, has created versions of the Lord of the Rings movies with corrected color timing. The following is copied from his description on tehparadox:

Fellowship of the Ring

When The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition blu-ray came out, many noticed that in comparison to the theatrical release and previous DVD and blu-ray releases, a darkening green tint had been applied across the whole film, turning snow and clouds meant to look white green and making everything look underexposed. Even the title, end credits and fade to white in rivendell were affected by this blanket green tint, giving everything in the film a green tint, including fleshtones.

The underexposed nature of the new transfer also led to many darker scenes like the mines of moria being very difficult to make out on the screen and daylight scenes like those in Hobbiton seeming very overcast rather than sunny like they were in the theatrical release and every other home release.

As you can imagine, there was a lot of controversy, with many calling for the studio responsible and the director to admit with a statement that a mistake had been made with the transfer of the blu-ray and for new corrected replacement blu-rays to be provided to those that had bought the flawed original blu-ray release. As you can imagine, that did not happen and that´s how things have stayed to this day.

With that in mind, I have gone ahead and created a corrected version myself, removing the blanket green tint so the snow, clouds and the fade to white in rivendell are indeed white again like they were in all the previous releases, returning this beautifully shot film back to its former glory and correcting the brightness and contrast so the film no longer looks underexposed.

I hope you like what i´ve done here. Please post back here saying whether you enjoyed this release, it would be greatly appreciated.

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition

Size: 15.3 GB

Video: 1920x804 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English DTS Audio 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: Elvish Subtitles in English

Subtitle Track 2: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 3: Spanish Subtitles

Available in 2 versions: one less dynamic/contrasty and the other more dynamic/contrasty (kk650’s preferred version)

----------------

Return of the King

Like the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition blu-ray, the Return of the King also has a green tint running throughout the whole film, so I have created this regraded version which has the green tint removed, returning the films true colour and making for a far more visually satisfying experience. Unlike with the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition blu-ray, the contrast and brightness on the Return of the King Extended Edition blu-ray are spot on IMHO so those remain the same in this regraded version.

In terms of editing, two changes have been made to the film:

The first change is removing the silly scene at the start of disc 2, the one where Peter Jackson gets shot by Legolas by mistake when Gimli nudges Legolas´s bow when he shoots, then Gimli has a very silly Oops reaction. It was removed for two reasons, the first being that its very cheesy and silly and comes across more as a Peter Jackson and crew cameo fanboy scene than a proper scene in the film that serves a real purpose. The second and more important reason is that it reveals the Army of the Dead too early, taking power away from their dramatic entrance into the battle of Pelennor Fields later in the film. The theatrical release did this much better without this superfluous scene IMHO so I have returned it to how it was in the theatrical release.

The second change is to remove something that has bugged me a great deal ever since I first saw the extended edition, that is Aragorn beheading the Mouth of Sauron. This never happens in the book, he is allowed to leave unharmed as a emissary of Sauron protected by the rules of Parley. To have Aragorn behead him in the film when under Parley cheapened Aragorn´s character a great deal, taking away a lot of his nobility for me and worst of all was completely at odds with his character as established in all the other scenes in the three films. The film version of Aragorn established throughout the three films would never do that. The book version of Aragorn would never do that. I lost a lot of sympathy for Aragorn after that, very stupid change from the book by Peter Jackson IMHO. Definately the low point of all three extended edition films for me.

So I have edited what is a great addition to the film IMHO, the Mouth of Sauron, so a lot of Aragorn´s stupid reaction shots have been removed and the beheading and everything directly leading up to it (starting with Aragorn moving menacingly towards the Mouth of Sauron) has been removed. Everything else has been left intact and I feel the scene flows seamlessly and is now much better than the extended edition, the Mouth of Sauron is able to say his piece and then leave unharmed which is much better IMHO, the nobility of all the main characters remain intact.

I hope you like what i´ve done here. Please post back here saying whether you enjoyed this release, it would be greatly appreciated.

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Extended Edition

Size: 16 GB

Video: 1920x804 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English DTS Audio 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: Elvish Subtitles in English

Subtitle Track 2: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 3: Spanish Subtitles

The Hobbit

Like the fellowship of the ring extended edition blu-ray, the hobbit: an unexpected journey blu-ray release also had the same blanket green tint added across the whole film. It´s easiest to see when the film title comes up against the background of the clouds. Both the title and the clouds are green on the blu-ray. I personally like my clouds and snow white rather than green though so I have gone ahead and removed the blanket green tint across the whole film. I now feel that the film is far more pleasing to the eye and therefore a lot nicer to watch.

I hope you enjoy what i´ve done here. Please post back here with feedback of what you think of this release after you check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

All HDTV broadcasts use the new master, with the altered color timing. It's really a coincidence that an HDTV broadcast of the old master showed and was capped before the new master was made. I should also mention that the HDTV I'm referring to is cut into 3 MPG files.

kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)
Time

Hello all, just to start, the projects described in this thread are NOT made by me but by kingkong650: a tehparadox user/former originaltrilogy member, who politely asked if I could start a thread for him.

This thread contains the technical specifications and descriptions for all the releases, copied verbatim from tehparadox. It only has information on the Star Wars releases; for all other releases, refer to the upcoming “kk650 regraded mega-thread” in the “Other Preservations and Fan Projects” section.

Prequel Trilogy

THE PHANTOM MENACE: Regrained Edition

Like many, I was unhappy with the all the DNR (Digital noise Reduction) that the official blu-ray of The Phantom Menace had that scrubbed away lot of the detail, making everybody in the film look very waxy, so I decided to try and see if I could reverse the DNR by adding some film grain myself.

By adding some fine grain to the transfer, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail that I was able to recover that I hadn’t even noticed before on the blu-ray. All this detail that had been hiding beneath the DNR had just come right up to the surface, making this new regrained version of The Phantom Menace not only more filmlike but more detailed as well, all considered, a big improvement over the original blu-ray transfer IMHO, especially when viewed in motion.

Available both in 7.82 and 16 GB versions.

----7.82 GB version----

Technical Specs:

Name: The Phantom Menace Regrained Edition

Size: 7.82 GB (fits on a DVD9)

Video: 1920x824 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby DTS 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: Alien Subtitles in English

Subtitle Track 2: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 3: Spanish Subtitles

----16 GB version----

Technical Specs:

Name: The Phantom Menace Regrained Edition

Size: 15.6 GB

Video: 1920x824 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby DTS 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: Alien Subtitles in English

Subtitle Track 2: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 3: Spanish Subtitles

Karlosfunkster and Makalala requested a 16GB version of this release so here it is. This 16GB version really is a very noticable improvement over the 8GB release in terms of a natural filmic grain look and added detail so I would recommend that everybody check it out. This film really looks much much better in this version than on the blu-ray IMHO, no more smoothed out digital looking waxy faces anymore. I actually really enjoy watching this film now because it has that ‘filmic’ feel again, as it should because it was still shot on film, before GL started shooting on digital for AOTC.

ATTACK OF THE CLONES: Regraded Edition

From the initial release of the Star Wars Complete Saga on blu-ray, I have always felt that Attack of the Clones has easily the worst transfer of the six films. A lot of people think that The Phantom Menace transfer is worse but I disagree because The Phantom Menace just suffers from one problem, from too much DNR, the colours and other image dynamics however are fine.

The blu-ray transfer of Attack of the Clones suffers from two big problems though:

  1. The transfer of Attack of the Clones has been DNRed to high heaven, in some ways worse even than the massively DNRed The Phantom Menace transfer. Everything looks soft and the whole transfer lacks detail.

  2. Attack of the Clones has had a strong dark teal tint added to it across the whole film, making everything look underexposed and all things meant to look white now look teal. It makes the whole transfer look pretty dull and awful IMHO. The DVDs never had this teal tint, the hdtv versions never had this teal tint, so I don’t understand why it was added, it really ruins the look of what used to be a very visually appealing film.

So I went looking for the highest quality source of the film I could find that had the original theatrical colours rather than this new underexposed teal look found on the official blu-ray. Using a couple of high quality hdtv streams of Attack of the Clones as sources, I recreated the blu-ray release of Attack of the Clones with the visually appealing colour grading of previous releases. I also found that these sources had far more fine detail than the blu-ray transfer, confirming what i’d already suspected, that the lack of detail wasn’t something inherent to the original digital master like some people had suggested, but that the the original master of Attack of the Clones had much more fine detail and this master has been massively DNRed to create the transfer on the blu-ray.

I personally find this new version of Attack of the Clones to be a big improvement over the official blu-ray, both in terms of fine detail and in terms of colour. Things meant to be white are now white again. I hope you enjoy what I’ve done here with this release.

Available both in 7.93 and 17 GB versions

----7.93 GB version----

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded Attack of the Clones

Size: 7.93 GB (fits on a DVD9)

Video: 1920x820 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby DTS 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

Hardcoded Alien Subtitles in English

-----17 GB version----

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded Attack of the Clones

Size: 17.2 GB

Video: 1920x1088 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby DTS 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

Hardcoded Alien Subtitles in English

sceptre208 requested a 17GB version of this release so here it is. This version is definately nicer looking and more detailed than the 8GB release so you should check it out. Due to this release being taken from a high quality hdtv transport stream source that hasn´t been DNRed like the blu-ray, this 17GB release is a lot more detailed than the official blu-ray. Of course the strong dark teal tint is gone as well, so overall this release is much better than the official blu-ray both in terms of detail and colour.

REVENGE OF THE SITH: Regraded Edition

Technical Specs:

Name: Regraded Revenge of the Sith

Size: 7.90 GB

Video: 1920x824 H264 23.976

Audio Track: English Dolby DTS 6.1

Subtitle Track 1: English Subtitles

Subtitle Track 2: Spanish Subtitles

Okay, while Revenge of the Sith has always been a very solid transfer in terms of image quality, the colour palette leaves a little to be desired. A blanket green tint has been applied to the whole film, making everything too green and fleshtones a little sickly, so I have gone ahead and removed that green tint, making the colours more natural and the film more visually appealing in the process.

I hope you enjoy what i´ve done here. Please post back here with feedback of what you think of this release after you check it out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Original Trilogy

Like many, I was unhappy with a lot the changes that were made for the Special Editions and most recently the blu-rays.

Harmy’s Despecialised Editions are great for those that want to see the films exactly as they were when they were originally released theatrically, but some of the changes (especially the updating of special effects) actually make the films better IMHO, so I decided to make ‘Semi-Specialised’ editions of these films to remove what I considered the bad changes while keeping all the good changes/additions.

After working on and off on these three films for almost two years, the Star Wars Semi-Specialised original trilogy is finally finished.

I hope that you enjoy these releases as much as I enjoyed making them. Do please let me know whether you like this release and if not, feel free to say why. If you run into any problems, also let me know and i’ll see what I can do.

The awful CG fest ‘Jedi Rocks’ has been removed and replaced with the original song from the theatrical release, Lapti Nek

The over the top carbon defreezing effects added to the blu-ray have been removed and replaced with the original defreezing effects from the theatrical release

The CG Dug added to the blu-ray release that walks down the steps of jabba palace just before Luke arrives has been removed and replaced with the original shot without the CG Dug

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features

For film transfers, I would recommend the oldest first. The really early Disney ones depended on the film process to produce the desired effect. The animator a then were smart enough to be able to compensate and even utilize the technicolor process to their advantage. They never intended the final picture to look as the original cels did. Also, that modern roto-scoping was definitely not present until restorations...

So, that being said, I would recommend the original trilogy: Snow White, Pinnochio, and Fantasia (with censored bits restored...).

Good LD transfers of the newer titles would be much appreciated though, Andrea. I think the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, and Aladdin could be feasibly restored to their original state by combining LD and BD sources (CD too for Aladdin). It would be quite an under-taking but more possible since there were not as many "restorative techniques" applied.

So BD25 or BD50? Hopefully the film grain will be kept in, which is my understanding.

See above. It's a BD50. As for the grain:

You_Too said:The clipping resulted in a loss of the grain that is present throughout the whole movie in the original, which we have restored by sampling grain from scenes where it wasn't destroyed.

...On closer examination of the HDX version, I could see now that it's oversharpened and that's why I thought it looked more compressed than it actually is. We're planning on maybe blurring it a bit to get back the cleaner look from before the oversharpening, and then sample some grain and re-add it over the whole movie to cover up whatever compression is left, and also to restore the grain in all scenes where compression might've reduced it.

^Sorry for the weird formatting.

About the 1999 DVD, it might actually have the most theatrically accurate color timing. The old documentary Terror in the Aisles has 35mm footage from what appears to be a print. It's very colorful like that transfer. The 2003(?) DVD was re-timed, as the Director's cut.

There is though a newly-released regraded version of the BD by kk650 which removes the real tint.

This sounds bad, I'm sorry but someone close to Bond always dies in the movies. It would be too jarring to have everyone live, just like Bond getting married....it's wrong!

Films without close ones dying:

Live and Let Die

The Spy Who Loved Me

Moonraker

For Your Eyes Only

Octopussy

Goldeneye

The World Is Not Enough

Die Another Day

Quantum of Solace

I have to admit that I kind of like the idea sometimes of a Bond mission where it's really just a mission, not anything emotional for Bond.
