ANNOUNCEMENT

“Stranger Things 4: Part 1” is finally out!
“Stranger Things 4: The Monster and the Superhero” and “Stranger Things 4: Part 2” will soon follow.

Overall, I have to say that I am pretty satisfied about how these three edits came to be.
There are for sure some small changes regarding audio mixing and transitions I would like to make at some point, but I think I need a break for now.

As always I hope you enjoy them and feel free to share any notes/issues you may find and ideas/suggestions that would help these fanedits grow and improve.

Thank you all for your support and patience.

Stranger Things - Film Edition (Released)
Time

“Stranger Things 4: Part 2” is finished and ready for rendering with a runtime of 2hours and 22minutes.
Finishing Part 1 before starting on Part 2 might not have been the wisest choise, 'cause I had to go back and change just one tiny thing which caused an unfortunate delay.

Regardless, Part 2 came together pretty easily since the last two episodes already had that finale vibe. That being said, I had to cut a few scenes and make some minor changes, mostly on Episode 7.
While I am a fan of long scenes with dialogue, my aim for this edit was to create a fast-paced and action-packed film, so several character-driven scenes were left out.
As I stated above this edit follows Eleven leaving Nevada and the gang at Hawkins and the Upside Down and catches up with Hopper, Joyce and Murray as they re-enter the prison.

Here is the changelist with some clips:

  • Removed Nancy and Jonathan outside of Hopper’s cabin
    https://streamable.com/1vys4l
  • Changed the end credits song to something more epic and fan-favourite

Due to the delay I mentioned above, all three fanedits won’t be released this week as planned, but I am optimistic for the next week. My next post will be the announcement of the release.

PS1: I added hardcoded English subtitles for the Russian dialogues in my “Stranger Things 4: The Monster and the Superhero”.
PS2: Since the concept of “companion films” are no longer an alternative take, after the release of “Stranger Things 4: The Monster and the Superhero” I am making the “Stranger Things 2: The Lost Sister” fanedit as “cannon”.

Time

“Stranger Things 4: The Monster and the Superhero” is done and currently rendering with a runtime of 1hour and 40minutes.

I have to say that while I initially started making this cut to gather all the stuff that did not fit into the main story in the end I really enjoyed the process. And I do believe that the final product is a tight, action-packed, suspenseful story that fits perfectly between Part 1 and Part 2 filling the gaps and connecting all the storylines.
While the runtime was never an issue for this edit, I did cut and tweak several scenes and plotlines that I personally thought didn’t work that well.

Here is a changelist with some clips:

ANNOUNCEMENT

“Stranger Things 4: Part 1” is almost done with a current runntime of 3hours and 30minutes.

Despite being the longest of my Stranger Things fanedits I will say that I am pretty happy with the result and I do believe that the main story of Volume 1 is much easier to follow this way. Lots of stuff had to be taken out and many scenes were trimmed down, but I think that I’ve put together a cut with a comprehensive story covering all the major events of Episodes 1-7.
I have to work a bit more on some transitions and then I am calling it finished. At least until any better ideas or suggestions come up.

Stranger Things - Film Edition (Released)
Time

So, I finally watched Volume 2 of Stranger Things 4.
After a few days of thinking and playing around with various senarios, these are my plans:

Stranger Things 4 will be split into three films:

STRANGER THINGS 4: PART 1

Which will cover the main events of Episodes 1-7.
In this first film we follow the heroes in Hawkins and El’s story arc in California and Nevada. Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle are present up to the point they loose El. Joyce only appears in the beginning of the film and her absence is only mentioned by Jonathan without further explanation. Hopper’s arc in Russia will be covered in the next instalment.

NOTE: I’ve been silently working on this cut for some time now and it will be done soon.

STRANGER THINGS 4: THE MONSTER AND THE SUPERHERO

Which will cover the remaining events of Episodes 1-7 and some from Episodes 8-9.
In this one we follow Jim Hopper’s journey through Russia and Joyce’s and Murray’s attempts to find him. Also, in this cut we catch up with Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle and their attempts to find El.

NOTE1: The title “The Monster and the Superhero” may actually refer to Eleven’s hypostasis, but here I used it for a different porpuse. “The Monster” is an actual reference to the monster which Hopper has to fight and “The Superhero” is both a reference to Eleven and a metaphor for Hopper’s role.

NOTE2: I’ve been thinking a lot about how to end this cut, if I wanted to tell the whole story of Hopper in one film and keep it separate from the rest of the season or if it was better to end it with a cliffhanger and continue with it in the next one.
While I have not made my final decision yet, I am currently working on a cut in which we leave Hopper, Joyce and Murray discovering all the monsters inside the prison and Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle discovering the millitary tracks in Nevada.

STRANGER THINGS 4: PART 2

Which will cover the main events of Episodes 8-9.
In this cut we follow El leaving Nevada to reunite with her friends and the rest of the characters in Hawkins and the Upside Down. Also, in this cut concludes Hopper’s arc in Russia.

NOTE: Regarding the events in Russia, if I am to proceed as said above, I will have to create a big time-jump from where we left our heroes in the previous film. Since I was not a big fan of them leaving the prison just to come back in there again, in my version it is implied that -after discovering the rest of the monsters- they search the prison for a flamethrower and then come back to the lab only to find that they had escaped.

So these are my plans for my Stranger Things 4 fanedits.
As I always say, I am open to suggestions and any kind of conversation.

In the following days I will post some clips of what I have already put together, while polishing my cut for Part 1.

I’ve been watching season 4. While I like it, there are way too many storylines happening at the same time. Just when I am getting interested in one story, it shifts to another and loses steam for me.

Exactly my thoughts. I found it hard at times to get invested into each storyline with these many shifts. On a possitive note, I think this time it was much easier to choose which parts to cut for my edit.

Solemn.Philosopher said:

With the length of the episodes, I wonder if it might be good to split them into four different movies [I haven’t finished the first half of the season yet to determine the best order]:

  1. Hopper/Joyce [Russia]
  2. Eleven/Mike/Will [California]
  3. Dustin/Lucas/Vecna [Hawkins]
  4. Final Film [I assume the three stories come together at some point]

The only concern is if each story has a good spot that can work as a conclusion.

Actually I had the same idea while watching the episodes. And while making four movies out of this season is possible, I think they are too many. And I have to include the original gang in the same film, even though they are split into different locations.
One thing I am certain about by now is that the Hopper/Joyce storyline will be a separate film. To be honest I did not enjoy it as much as the rest, but I believe that it will be essential for the finale.
For the time being these are my plans for Season 4:

  1. Stranger Things 4: Part 1
Which will follow the main events on Hawkins and California from Volume 1.
  2. Stranger Things 4: Jim’s Story (I am still in search for a subtitle for this one)
Which will follow Hopper, Joyce and Murray.
  3. Stranger Things 4: Part 2
Which will include the final two episodes and maybe parts of Volume 1.

As I’ve stated before, I don’t mind long movies if the story is compelling, but I don’t want to exceed the 3hours limit by far. I guess when Volume 2 arrives everything will become clearer.

Solemn.Philosopher said:

Also, what is the markup for spoilers on here? I can’t seem to figure it out.

Just click Quote on a post with a spoiler tab and then copy the text. That’s how I do it, I don’t know if there is an easier way.

ANNOUNCEMENT

STRANGER THINGS 1

In preparation for Stranger Things 4 I’ve been brushing up my editing skills and I’ve put together a new version of Stranger Things 1. It is basically the same cut with better pacing, smoother transitions, additional music and a slightly shorter runtime (2 hours 47 minutes) with the only major difference from the previous version being the removal of Nancy’s encounter with the Demogorgon in the forrest. The new version will be available in the following days and it will replace the previous cut.

STRANGER THINGS 2 & STRANGER THINGS: THE LOST SISTER

Also, I’ve been working on an new cut of Stranger Things 2, basically fulfilling an earlier idea, which sits on 2 hous and 50 minutes, and a brand new cut covering the events of Season 2 that left out with a runtime of 56 minutes.
Here is the new opening for Stranger Things: The Lost Sister:
https://streamable.com/1wlh9y

These edits will not replace the current version of Stranger Things 2, they will only serve as alternative versions.

ThanosM. said:
The film (Stranger Things 2) will follow Eleven until she finds Hopper’s files and then catch up with her again when she enters Will’s house, leaving her absence as a mystery. In this case, I will put together a new film (Stranger Things: The Lost Sister) which will follow Eleven’s journey outside of Hawkins where she finds her mom and Kali before her reunion with the gang.

STRANGER THINGS 4

I have yet to finish Volume 1 of Season 4, but I won’t start any project until July when the last two episodes drop.
However, I do have some early ideas I want to share.

SPOILERS

Obviously, the longer runtime of the episodes makes the task of putting together one film much more difficult than before. Not to mention all the new characters, the different locations and the many subplots that take place simultaneously. Plus the last two episodes that are already film-lenght.
One thing I want to avoid is to split the season into to two parts. But I also don’t want to make a film that exceeds the 3 hour runtime by far.
So I am thinking of creating another “companion film” such as Stranger Things: The Lost Sister, this time covering Jim Hopper’s journey and Joyce’s and Mur’s attempts to find him.
As I’ve said these are just some early thoughts, but I do want to hear your thoughts and ideas about Season 4. Just keep them under a spoiler tab.

Mando EP3: A New Path (A Book of Boba Fett Edit) [RELEASED]
Time

Ι finally found the time to watch your first cut as well.
Great job again, smudger9. I honestly don’t have anything to say that hasn’t been said in the comments above. This show was at times really hard for me to watch, but I really liked what you did with the material you had.
If I ever feel the need to rewatch this show, your edit will be my only choise. Well, the final cut of it whenever it is done.

That being said, I don’t know if there will ever be a Season 2 of Boba Fett or how big the role of his character will be in future installments of this expanded universe, but I wonder if you could theoretically skip this whole season in your collection of The Mandalorian films and use just the Mando stuff for an alternative Episode 3 when Season 3 of The Mandalorian comes out.

I guess we will have to wait.

ADDED FILM VI/FILM 6.

Once again I have to congratulate you on your work for Film 6, my friend.
And once again I have to applaud your skills in storytelling. You don’t just cut and paste scenes from the show, but you use the existing footage to create a new and fresh take on the overall story, making these edits something far more than a simple season-to-film project. Not to mention the additional music that exchanges the whole experience. And I write these things here for anyone unfamiliar with your work to see and take in mind if they choose to watch your edits.

This time, in Film 6, once again I really enjoyed your approach on each character and the parts of their stories you chose to tell, as well as the parts you chose to leave out or use in the next installments.
However, I do have some criticism about the pacing of this film and some suggestions, if you are willing to consider them. Always with much respect to you and your hard work.

CHARACTERS

Starting off with Arya, I think you handled her time in Braavos really well and created a nice and tight arc, leaving her character where you left her. Same with Daenerys and Tyrion and all the events in Meereen, as well as Stannis and the conclusion of his arc.
At Winterfell, I also liked how you handled Sansa and Theon’s story and their escape from the Boltons. Same with the events at Kings Landing regarding the High Sparrow, Maragery and Cersei. As you have previously said, these events make much more sense being in this film than the previous.

As far as Jon Snow, I found your approach bold and I think that it certainly worked. Making him stay dead for the majority of the film, made his comeback way more exciting. However, I do think that you should have started the film with the shot of him lying on the ground at Castle Black, establishing that he is really dead, since that’s how the last film ended. And maybe leave his resurrection for the very end, making it the big shocking event of the film.

And now we come to Bran. Bran’s story was a really special and somewhat confusing part of the show as well, and I have to say that it didn’t really work for me in this film. I assume that it wasn’t easy to put him back in the whole narrative after his long absence and I did like the way you covered all the events we missed, similar to what you did with Sansa in Film 5. But I also think that in the way you chose to tell his story you didn’t make creal who the Three Eyed Raven and the Children of the Forest are or why Bran is staying with them or what their whole purpose is. That being said, I also don’t really know what you could have done differently. Maybe include a bigger “flashback” covering the whole scene of Bran and the gang finding the Three Eyed Raven, or put that scene back in Film 4 where we last saw them. I know that there is the issue of the recast, but I guess the story is more important than a new face.
One thing that I am certain about is that you should have introduced Bran way earlier in the film and not around the middle of it. His whole arc felt like it was interrupting the film and by the end I don’t know if it accomplished the impact it was supposed to accomplish.

Anyway, I don’t know what your feelings are about this edit and if you are willing to make some changes on it, but this small complaint of mine certainly does not take away anything from the marvelous work you have done throughout this series.
My excitement remains on the roof and I am super looking forward to what you will do next.

Subtitles

And if anyone could bother to do English subtitles for some of the films, I would reward with a bag of gold.

I have already done subtitles for the first 5 films, although in Greek. I have no current plans to do them in English too, but I can share the srt files if anyone wants to work on them. And then we can split the gold.
The subtitles are perfectly synced to Anjohan’s video files and all they will have to do is fill in the dialogues with Engilsh text (I do not suggest Google translate 'cause the result would be atrocious). Which is still not an easy job, but certainly easier than creating a whole new subtitle file.

The nitpick you mention is actually a very weird one; you see - that is actually there in the original footage. For some reason the editors cut away from The Queen of Thorns and jump to a wide shot of King’s Landing i believe. This do of course work a little bit better as a transition as the scene with Margarey and her take place there, but it was still a very odd transition. My guess is that something about the scene looked wrong in post (one of the actors dropping the mask a little bit too quick perhaps?) and therefore they jump to another scene mid-dialogue. It is a very weird one, and I did as best I could to “make it work”. But yeah, it is a weird one and I am not surprised that was found a little jarring. I would of liked to know myself why this was done.

Wow that is really weird, I did not remember that jump-cut in the original episode. But your explanation sounds valid and in that case you couldn’t have done much to improve it.

Anjohan said:

As you yourself so easily figured out, keeping one 3-hour long narrative is the goal and also the hustle - and therefore, when characters of importance are for instance imprisoned, or held hostage, or kidnapped - or whatever - leaving them for a while also serves to heighten the tension of said events, but also gives me as an editor a great possibility to include other - often more urgent - plot points to emerge or at least start the foreshadowing of upcoming events.

Take Maragery for instance. She is mentioned by name I think thirty times in the upcoming Film - but we only have one scene with her (and the High Sparrow). But in the seventh film, we get her plan to fool the High Sparrow and the Faith Militant because it becomes relevant to the third act of that film. But as for this next one, she is only relevant to two main characters; Tommen and Cersei, and both have a lot going on that I find more important to focus on than Margarey sitting in a cell. So it’s so much trying to balance that I sometimes find myself scratching my head for days, but I have found this approach to work the best having now edited five “film versions” of the seasons.

Yeah, after that explanation leaving Maragery’s story there makes much more sense. And your whole 10-film plan becomes much easier to understand. It also becomes more apparent that your edits are much more than seasons-to-films projects, like smudger9’s Mandalorian films (which I love) or my Stranger Things edits. You basically create a whole new narrative with the material of the show, which is way more complicated and way more admirable.

Damn, I now am even more excited for the next films, which I didn’t think could happen.
Keep up the good work.

I finally sat and watched your much anticipated fifth instalment and, I have to say, that you did once again a brilliant job.

I will also compliment on your opening montage of Sansa’s story. The narration with the music and the intermediary scenes were a nice way to catch up with her journey from where we left her in the previous film, leaving out any unnecessary bits.
Overall, I liked that this film focuses mainly on what happens on the North and Beyond the Wall, following Jon in this very important part of his story, while summarizing Tyrion’s journey to Meereen. You also did an exceptional job on “un-cringing” the events in Dorne. That was a major issue for me on Season 5 and I am very happy with what you did.

Again, as in your previous films, the editing and the transitions were flawless. I took the time to make subtitles for this film (not in English though), so I think I took a good glimpse on how you managed some dialouges and plotlines, so once again I applaud your effort. Also, the addition of extra music was a nice touch that gave a more cinematic feel to the film.

If I had to nitpick, I found odd a certain transition somewhere around 01:57 in which Ollena chats with Margaery in King’s Landing and the scene cuts to Dorne. I wonder if that was a choise of yours or a mistake you didn’t notice. I would also have liked to have seen a bit more of the whole Faith Militant thing and what happened to Margaery in this film, but I am not complaining. 3 hours is a perfect runntime for this kind of projects and a man can only fit certain things into one narration.

Once again, great job. I am so grateful for your efforts and I am super pumped about the next instalment.

Well the finale was an unsatisfying mess. This is going to take a lot of work to sort it out! I honestly think an edit is the only way I’ll revisit the show. I start this evening……

Couldn’t agree more.

SPOILERS

I was hoping for an episode without Grogu. I wanted his and Mando’s recomposition to be an exclusive Mandalorian moment and a more emotional one. There were some cool moments in this episode, but, to be honest, I didn’t even care about the whole fight.

If I were to make an edit out of this season perhaps I would make a film about Boba’s past and his attempts to bring peace in Mos Espa until Episode 5. And then another film (maybe Mandalorian 3) with Episodes 5-6-7. Although it would be an underwhelming Mandalorian film.
Very intersted to see how you will handle such material. Wish you all the luck.

The unfortunate thing is that we got a very messy Boba Fett series, but the fortunate one is that we will get a new Mandalorian edit sooner than we expected. 😛

Another option would perhaps be to wait for Season 3 of The Mandalorian to see if you can fit all the Mando stuff of The Book of Boba Fett with whatever happens then.

Anyway, I am sure after the last episode everything will be much more clear.

The story is set in 19th-century London and follows Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), a mysterious clairvoyant, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), a daring American gunslinger and Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), a former explorer of the African continent, as well as various characters from gothic fiction such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula, while taking a twist on mythical creatures such as vampires, werewolves and witches.

ABOUT THE EDITS

My goal was to create a series of feature-length films covering the main events of each season to serve as a recap for those who know and love the TV show or as a first time viewing for anyone who doesn’t want to invest that much time.
Since each season has 8-10 50 minutes episodes with various plots and fully fledged characters, it was certainly not an easy project. I wanted to cover as much as possible while focusing on fulfiling each character’s arc, yet maintinig a watchable runtime. Many scenes and subplots were removed or heavily trimmed and OST and SFX were used for smooth trantitions and montages.

This show has always been very special to me and I treated these edits with much love and respect.
That being said, the films that came up are certainly “not easy to watch”. If you find it difficult to watch extra long movies, maybe these edits are not for you. But if you don’t mind sitting back and enjoying films with beautiful cinemotography, rich set design, complex characters and beautifully written and brilliantly acted dialogues, elements of the series I didn’t want to lose, then I hope you will find something interesting in these edits.

THE COLLECTION

FILM 1

Penny Dreadful: Something Within Us All

Runtime: 2hr 43min

FILM 2

Penny Dreadful: Fresh Hell

Runtime: 3hr 39min

FILM 3

Penny Dreadful: No Beast so Fierce

Runtime: 1hr 30min

FILM 4

Penny Dreadful: The Blessed Dark

Runtime: 3hr 18min

NOTE:

Something Within Us All and Fresh Hell cover Season 1 and 2 respectively, while Season 3 is split into two films. No Beast so Fierce covers solely the portion of Season 3 in New Mexico and it kind of serves as a short companion film and The Blessed Dark covers the main plot of Season 3 in London.

All four films are available through PM. Any kind of feedback would be much appreciated.

Time

Αnnouncement

Ηello everyone and happy new year to all!

Version 3 of Stranger Things 2 and Stranger Things 3 are now available.

The first post has been modified covering all the changes.
Those who already have a link for the previous cuts should be able to check out the updated versions. Anyone who doesn’t have it and wish to watch all three films, can send me a PM.

In these new versions I tried to achieve better pacing, smoother transitions and a shorter runtime.
Of course, I am not a professional, but I can surely say that I am way more satisfied with my new effort on these Stranger Things edits.

A Watchmen (HBO) edit that makes Hooded Justice's origin into a 2 hour movie - The Bass Reeves Cut (Released)
Time

I finally sat and watched your Bass Reeves Cut, and I loved it!

I was not one of those who loved the mini-series, but I surely liked it a lot. Watchmen covered many ambitious themes and ideas and it span through many rich plotlines. With your cut you managed to capture the most intersting plotline of the show and you delivered a storng and condensed story, as promised.
As far as a fanedit goes, it was flawless. There was not a single moment that I felt like I was watching a fanedit.

If I had to give some minor notes, I would suggest a different title card (maybe something more stylized) and perhaps getting rid of the very final shots of Angela which looked like a set-up for a potential sequel. But again, this is just nitpicking.

Great job, you really nailed it!
