The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Besides The Clone Wars movie and the originals, I’ve gone to every Star Wars film thus far since I was able to. Now I wonder what my limit is. I’ll definitely see IX despite my overall disappointment in TLJ (someone that has seen it twice, and intends to see it a third time so that my mom can see it), but now I’m even more cautious of the future films.

“Easy to say, difficult to prove” nails it though. What sick game have I gotten myself into?!

Agreed.
One of my main issues with TLJ is Rey’s character. She doesn’t actually go through any training, nor does the movie focus on her personal journey / inner struggles. Most of her time she spends just trying to get through to Luke and Kylo. Thus we are left at the end with a pretty bland protagonist heading in to the THIRD MOVIE, which is a shame because it feels like such a wasted opportunity for what could have been a really cool character.

Abrams didn’t do much better with her in TFA, but the first 10 minutes or so where she is introduced on Jakku - I thought that was a great introduction for the character. In fact, for me that’s really the only section in any of the Disney SW movies that feels like “Star Wars.” It features really solid, visual storytelling and we learn a lot about Rey in just a few short minutes. (John Williams’ theme here adds a lot as well).

All of this for sure! Your second point even more so highlights why I’m so frustrated with how Rey was done in TLJ. I went from being impressed, feeling this connection to this brand new character, to overall disappointed. I have very little reason to root for her anymore. The only flimsy story thread from this film and into the next that I’m curious about is how Rey will use the Jedi books. But man, for a 2nd act, I should be wanting Rey to succeed so badly, but I just don’t.

I think TLJ may have just pushed it too far for me, but I could use another viewing at this point. Did she struggle with the rocks at all? All I recall is her holding a zillion rocks in the air and looking rather surprised.

I think it’s a hard pill to swallow since Rey’s natural talent isn’t contrasted with inner conflict, or really anything obstacle wise, in the second movie of a trilogy!

I saw it twice, and as far as I can remember, I don’t think she really struggled to lift those rocks. But her surprised expression, I don’t think it’s an issue. I mean, you’ve got Luke in A New Hope, who’s a brag about sniping womp rats, shouts, “I GOT EM! I GOT EM!” when sniping those Tie Fighters from the Falcon gun. I believe it’s just a display of emotion where even though the characters are confident in their abilities, it’s a whole ’nother expectation to do it under high stake conditions, hence the surprise expression.

Still, however, the scene doesn’t really serve Rey well given again, you have people that hate Rey’s ease and use of the Force, and you have people similar to us that don’t mind Rey’s fast progression but can admit that Rey thus far doesn’t have much struggle to overcome to back up the heroic acts she’s able to pull.

I’m with DominicCobb and EyeShotFirst. Some of you all are still stuck in the pre-TLJ era with TFA. Yes, many of us, including me, were thinking everyone in the film really knew who Rey was. Her being a former student of Luke was the strongest extrapolation I could get from it. However, post-TLJ, literally everything still works. You think Maz asking Han, “Who’s the girl?” would be asked if Rey was a “somebody”? No, Maz didn’t know who Rey was, hence the question. Han most likely confirmed that Rey was just some random girl from “nowhere” (Jakku).
And also, some of you think, “Well, why did TFA give us so many hints? We were SUPPOSED to think Rey was important!” Okay, you’re right to an extent. Yes, TFA made you think with its many hints. BUT! Can you imagine how damn boring it would be if we had a twist where Rey is revealed to be related to someone we already know? Think about it. Just about 80-90% of us were thinking Rey was a daughter of x, y, or z. The BIG twist was finding out she’s just some girl that came from no one noteworthy. That’s way more satisfying than shrinking the galaxy to some lineage of heroes we already knew.

When it comes to the dynamic between TFA and TLJ, you just need to re-frame how you see those lines now. It’s called a perspective change, and it totally works. Junk scavenger girl is causing a huge disturbance in the Force, and that makes all the important people raise an eyebrow, and that’s all there is to it!

TLJ screwed this all up for me. She didn’t get any training from Luke, but apparently she’s a full-blown Samurai now. I could have lived with that, but the scene with the rocks was stupid. Yoda’s lifting Luke’s X-wing in TESB was a demonstration of mastery. Rey’s tossing CGI boulders around like styrofoam was purely 'cos she can. Hell, she was as surprised as I was!

I think there’s a key difference between ESB Luke and Rey here, and I believe you can transfer what you liked about TFA’s Rey to this film. Back in the days I also defended Rey’s progression in TFA, I pointed out that Rey developed a skill more valuable than combat prowess. What was that skill? Patience. All those years spent in isolation on Jakku, that meant many days and nights of being alone. She was also willing to wait hard long years for her supposed parents to return. So with this skill, this served as a trait that allows Rey to really soak in her surroundings, to open herself up to the light, the darkness, the life, and decay, as seen in that mediation sequence. Even in TFA, she paused for that brief moment with Kylo Ren in that duel in order to form a close bond with the Force.

So as it stands, I still don’t exactly have issues with Rey’s fast Jedi progression. Luke was pretty impatient for two movies. You could tell he wanted the Jedi Knight status NOW. Yes, Luke grew up a on a nearly desolate desert planet, but his life was much ‘easier’ in comparison to nearly every day being survival for food and shelter, alone, that Rey faced.

What I DO have an issue with is that Rey has very little conflict character wise. Her fast Jedi leveling-up would be fine if she had stronger inner conflict.

9) Rogue One: I get it. I know why people like it. But I hate it. It’s the only SW film I never have any desire to see again. It felt so sterile, like it was made in a lab. It tells an inconsequential story, throws in jarring callbacks that have no story purpose (I don’t find TFA as guilty of this because nostalgia is a theme in that film) and the digital Tarkin and Leia characters make me sick to my stomach. I hate that technology. It devalues an actor’s work and seems to imply that their superficial appearance is their only worthy contribution. Even the Darth Vader scenes felt this way. I didn’t need to see him take out a hallway of rebels. It was gratuitous and left a bad taste in my mouth. The rest of the film was so bland and disjointed that I hardly remember it. 1/10

That basically nails my reaction when you say you have no desire to see it again. I passed by a DVD shelf at a grocery store once, and saw the darn thing listed at $30 and thought to myself, “that is so overpriced for such a let down of a film.”

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Anyone think the Falcon should be destroyed in IX? I was kinda bummed even back in TFA that it lasted movie. And then it came back into action in TLJ. My reasoning is because it’s making excessive appearances and if it isn’t gone in IX, that leaves room for it to appear in yet another trilogy after IX… Plus, not gonna lie, I’m going to tear up seeing it blown up or something in the next movie.

The ultimate fan edit: movie plays all the way through just about the same, except…

Finn wakes up at the very end; it was a bad dream! 😋

But hmm, opening on Canto… sounds pretty bold but still risky. Rearranging sounds so difficult to do because it seems like everything does weave in a way, despite feeling messy, still being connected in a sequence that can’t be changed too drastically.

SilverWook has been pretty darn active, even oojason. It’s not like it’s been a lawless zone, given how quite a few users have been banned since I’ve come to talk TLJ. Part of the issue I believe is that some of us don’t use the report button as often as we should; more often than not, I see it where members try to play moderator, but it tends to lead to more issues and becomes a bigger mess until a moderator has been alerted.
