After having a quick training session by ob1… Yes. Rey just decided she could use it by closing her eyes mid battle

Obi Wan merely awakened Luke’s ability of the Force while on the Falcon. Once that happened, Luke could use the Force in a more focused way and blew up the Death Star.

Rey touched Luke’s old saber and was awakened of the Force and Maz further explained what that awakening meant.

Also think to how both Rey and Luke had to quickly learn to simply be aware of their ability and how both wanted to not trust it at first. Luke wanted to use his targeting computer and you could see his hesitation when Obi Wan told him “use the Force”. When Maz told Rey to close her eyes and feel the Force, she didn’t because she didn’t want to believe it herself. It wasn’t until the right moment when things were dire that she decided to accept the Force for what it was, remembered back to what Maz said, and closed her eyes to take in the gravity that is the Force.

I’m getting the feeling that Rey will inherit not only the Falcon, but that R2 and Chewie will become her companions in the next films.

I may be the minority in this, but I almost want the Falcon to be destroyed in this New Trilogy. The Falcon has seen a lot of action, but I’d like to think its time is nearing, just like Han’s. I’d more than welcome a new freighter for the new cast to use after the Falcon gets possibly blown to smithereens.

Haven’t seen it, but I heard it’s a really bad quality rip-off of the story in the first Star Wars, incredibly lacking in originality. To the point where any criticisms against how references to the original trilogy were handled in the prequels make Lucas seem like a master of subtlety…

Is that the feeling a lot of other Star Wars fans have that have already seen it?

For me? No, not really. Yes, there are TONS of reviewers/fans mentioning how TFA is a New Hope rehash, but in all honesty, it’s setting the new trilogy in a great direction in my humble opinion. Most will say how Starkiller Base is very weak to reuse as Death Star III, but after thinking hard about it, I realize this is far different from A New Hope. Both Death Stars achieve VERY little if you think about it. Starkiller base? It does a SUBSTANTIAL amount and propels the trilogy in a possibly very interesting direction.

Yes, it’s so easy to notice the parallels, but again, these are new characters with different motivations and old characters have matured with different goals in mind.

I can’t believe so many people are dissing on the score. I think it’s gold. When I first saw the film it was admittedly hard to latch on to because so much of it was new, but I’ve listened to it non-stop since and when I saw the movie a second time the music was huge in my enjoyment.

I really suggest people listen to the soundtrack. It’s fantastic work, very well crafted. Definitely better than the half-assed AOTC or ROTS scores, and perhaps even on the same level or better than TPM or ROTJ. It doesn’t have huge stand out track like those, necessarily, but the whole of it, the way Williams develops the new themes, makes me almost appreciate this one more.

I’ve been listening to it a few times on Youtube, and it has some good bits, yes. My issue, and this issue alone could be only because I saw it once, but to my ears, the way the sound and the music score was edited together, it was pretty bad. If my ears aren’t deceiving me, the sound effects and the score was competing for a chance to stand out and as a result, William’s score got muddled out unusually for a Star Wars movie. Combined with a score that isn’t bombastic and swelling with William’s magic, there’s some problems.

Again, I could be totally in the wrong, but so far, I’ve read several comments saying similar things which is worrying.

Solid 7.5/10 film for me, much better than the prequels but it apes ANH far too much. That pulled me out of being fully engrossed in the movie.

Also, I really disliked how they ignored the implicit promise of the end of RotJ and the whole idea of the Republic of a more civilised time. 30 years down the track we have what basically appears to be the same status quo as the beginning of ANH, big evil Empire and small underdog resistance.

Supplementary materials reveal that theFirst Order is an Imperial Remnant stationed in the Unknown Region and that the Republic haven’t investigated that area really so we’re only seeing an absolute corner of the galaxy and the whole galaxy isn’t like this.

But the movie doesn’t hint at that at all. Everything we see basically points to the Empire being dominant again. It’s lazy and bugged me as well.

I thought Hux’s speech made it sound quite like (from their perspective) the First Order were underdogs trying to right things and that the evil new Republic was lying and spreading propaganda, etc. What was not clear was the secretive nature of the ‘resistance’ and how/why they were unofficially sanctioned by the Republic. I only caught Ren mentioning that fact on my second viewing. I get now that the official Army (which is presumably quite small as the new republic did not want to be a new empire) wasn’t involved, and probably took massive losses in the Hosnian strike, thereby being unable to help attack Starkiller.

But why the secret faction in the first place? Too many major targets from the old Rebellion? Are they actually viewed as terrorists in this time of peace? A special unit to deal with Sithy folks like Snoke?

I actually like the fact that we’re being dropped back into the Galaxy without all the answers. But we’ll see once the deleted scenes are released if there would have been some things better explained now as opposed to in the next two films.

I think Leia mentions that the Senate is too slow to enact anything so therefore Leia took action into her own hands to lead the Resistance. Leia apparently also sent a negotiator to the Republic, but you see her get blown up on that Coruscant-esque planet.

Also, I would assume the Resistance became a thing once shit hit the fan when Kylo Ren destroyed the new Jedi Order. Leia most likely was paranoid that Kylo Ren would run off to create a new Empire in the light of Darth Vader and thus she saw the need to lead Rebellion 2.0 if the Republic had a long legislation process.

New To Star Wars Plz Help - watching Star Wars with my young son...
Time

Take my perspective with a grain of salt, as I’m someone whom grew up with OT on VHS and Prequels in theaters/DVD releases.

I’m in agreement that OT (4, 5, 6) should be viewed first. It offers an authentic view order; this is how most of the world came to know Star Wars. Then, while you don’t have to watch the Prequels, let your kid see them. Why?

I’ll tell ya, because of the Prequels, it made my love for Star Wars even bigger! Excluding The Phantom Menace (even as a kid, I didn’t bother much with that VHS tape and instead watched RotJ multiple times over TPM), II & III expanded on my imagination as a child. The prequels made it fun as a kid to see new ships, new characters, new locations, battles, etc! I drew sooo many pictures, made many cardboard iterations of the prequel ships, and had a blast reenacting lightsaber duels (especially the iconic one from Revenge of the Sith)!

Fast forward to now, while yes, the Prequels haven’t aged well and while I’ve read countless critics of them and while yes, I vastly prefer the OT, I still cannot fully condemn the prequels due to how it made Star Wars live on and expand into games/novels. Without the Prequels, you don’t get something like Knights of the Old Republic.

So overall, the point I’m driving home is that while you may very well hate 1, 2 , and 3, don’t be the authority to deny your kid to see them.

I agree about the soundtrack. Aside from Rey’s theme, it felt modern and low key. I wonder if someone directed John Williams to deviate from the grande style of prior films so we can transition into mediocrity (oops, meant modernity).
Though, I wonder if the slight hint at the Imperial March as we come upon Luke at the end means anything.

I watched a 60 Minutes special on TFA a few days before release. They showed Williams doing his thing and then after he was done, Abrams was actually giving him feedback and what to improve on. Ever since then, I can’t help but wonder if Abrams screwed up William’s magic.

I simply don’t know right now. But it sure wasn’t STAR WARS for me. I’d take even Jar Jar stepping in the poop. Or coarse sand. Or even love has blinded you. Or better yet just bring back the EU.

Never would I had thought someone would seriously praise those Prequel points over TFA.

The sound mix was un-inventive. Perhaps worst of all was the JW score, especially since he understands these so well and truly made the Prequels watchable.

I however agree 100% regarding the sound. Williams did a better performance for the Prequels than TFA,
regrettably.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

Off subject a bit, but does anyone think the following?

Finn is a Solo (read the new comics-Han was married before the '77 movie to a woman of color), thus making Finn and Ren half-brothers.

Rey is a Kenobi, not a Skywalker (maybe Obiwan’s granddaughter). I only say this because of the voices she hears during her flashback (but she also heard Yoda’s as well).

Snoke is Darth Plageus.

Discuss.

Finn seems rather young, so it’s rather doubtful that Finn would look that aged if Han married before the events ANH. It really would be far reaching to shoehorn in that Han was screwing around and had a random kid he didn’t know about throughout the whole trilogy. I say nay.

A Kenobi? Highly… improbable. Those flashbacks are voices that were heard/seen mostly from Luke’s perspective. One line from Kenobi. One line from Yoda. One line from Luke. What’s the common denominator? It’s tied to Luke, especially the imagery of Cloud City corridors. Also, Maz kept saying the saber was calling to Rey. That saber is a Skywalker heirloom.

That Snoke theory is being tossed around a lot. Many believe it. I’m on the fence. It sounds a little silly that they’ll go, “NOPE, you thought Palpy was pulling the strings?? Hahahaha! Snoke IS THE Master Puppeteer!!” It’s just too much. There’s absolutely no hints that there was something beyond Palpatine and as far as I’m assuming, Palpatine would be the type to make sure his old Master was dead-dead and wouldn’t serve him. The only thing that does make it a sound theory is that Plagues probably cheated death due to his… knowledge of… Midichlorians.
It all depends. This can really be compelling or really go downhill.

The problems with the sound mix cannot be blamed on poor theater sound systems. I saw the movie in Dolby Atmos at the Ciné Capri, the best theater in Phoenix. I’ve heard things sound really good in there. This mix was not one of them.

I was kinda hoping I could blame the theater I saw it in, but it appears as though this is sadly not the case. Could they somehow ‘fix’ it for a DVD release…? Doubtful… but hopeful.

Edit: This double post was accidental.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas

I loved the opening scenes on Jakku - but the scene with the tentacle monsters feels like it belongs in a different (and less good) movie. I’d like to see it cut entirely. It’s just a question of whether Rey would have returned immediately to Jakku if the CGI monster scene/emergency hyperspace jump hadn’t happened.

Honestly they looked like a cross between the Matrix’s sentinels and something you’d see in Men in Black. What actually bothered me beyond the CGI monsters was that I felt they wasted Han’s “Come on baby, don’t let me down” line while a CGI monster was clinging onto the Falcon. Yeah, ESB callback, but… it really was unnecessary.

I’ve only seen this film once, but I’m inclined to agree that it’d be difficult to edit that scene without screwing something up in the story.

Edit: Perhaps an edit that would be nice is if Snoke’s hologram looked… like a Star Wars hologram. I’m not quite sure I buy, even 30 years later, that holograms can look too real.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I genuinely enjoyed the film. However, something that really grates me the wrong way was the soundtrack. It’s a little heartbreaking to say one of the flaws of this film had to be the music score. In many ways, I hyped up certain parts of the film and even if it didn’t meet those expectations, I was met with some satisfying bits. Yet overall, going into the film knowing John Williams was still composing for Star Wars, it really felt like a letdown. Whenever the classic score slipped in, it felt great! The new soundtrack… I don’t know, in many respects, it was as if his score was competing with the sound effects. Something wasn’t done well in my opinion.

Something I cherish about John William’s score across all six films was that he was able to add a grander scale to every scene. In TFA, scenes that should had felt swelling with emotional weight fell short since again, to my ears, the music was trying to compete with the action which sounded more muddled and messy.

Overall, that was really my biggest gripe. There were a few minor things, but still, I really loved this film. First time I’ve ever seen my dad walk out of a theater with a smile! Night and day experience compared to when he took me to see the prequels.

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years

Really just shocked...

I've always been curious about what an Episode VII would like on the big screen, but honestly never expected one to HAPPEN, nor did I think it would be done by Disney.

After watching the quick interview, I like to think that Disney will move many Star Wars adaptations to the big screen than LucasFilm ever envisioned. A new cast of Luke/Leia/Solo, etc is going to be interesting as well.

I'm pretty sure it's a design image from The Star Wars the old Republic game.

Close. It's actually the 'Ebon Hawk', the ship from the RPG 'Knights of the Old Republic' from 2003.

One of the best RPGs, if not games, ever. :-)

I <3 the Ebon Hawk! And fo sho, one of the BEST games L.A./Bioware could muster up!

And yes, as Bob pointed out, my sig was just a quick grab from Google Images from a scene of "The Old Republic: Hope" trailer showing Alderaan (I just really liked how those animators rendered out the landscape of Alderaan).
