Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Whenever I try to rank Star Wars films, I just can’t seem to do it. I’ve seen them all in almost equal viewings. The only one I’ve avoided most of these years is TPM, and then obviously, I don’t have access to TFA for home viewing yet.

Yeah, PT will always be several degrees lower than the OT. Still, some days I might enjoy watching AotC and RotS since they were part of my childhood. Other days, I love throw myself into the atmospheric display of ESB, or enjoy the great tri-finale battle in RotJ, or see again how Luke began his journey in ANH.

If I had a ‘ranking’ system for Star Wars, I would put Episodes II-VII into a “I would rewatch these for fun” box and TPM gets put into a “Ehh, I wouldn’t actively seek to rewatch this” box.

The Star Wars Bad Lip Reading videos were disappointing. There are bits of goodness (like Lando & Nein Numb), but most of it isn’t up to the usual BLR standard.
The ‘Bushes of Love’ song at the end of the Star Wars one was funny, but the full version is a let down. There’s hardly any lip reading going on! That chorus is catchy though…

I’d say their shining work are the Hunger Game BLR’s and some Walking Dead stuff. But yeah, the Star Wars ones weren’t all that great.

No. I never said that and I never implied it. But Luke most certainly would have. If you object to the word “certainly” then put it this way: It is far more likely that Luke would have told everyone his father’s story than not.

Curious, but why do you think so? I ask because I’ve been thinking about this and I lean more towards him not. Luke to me is not the kind of hero to boast about his adventure and how he heroically vanquished evil/redeemed his father. I think back to the scene in ROTJ where he burns his father’s remains… alone. Why didn’t he have at least Leia, his sister, join him for the Vader bonfire?

Also, I think Luke would had been proud to say, in an alternative universe, he killed Vader if say Vader wasn’t his father or didn’t know Vader was his father. However, since Luke learned that Vader was his father, it’s something that struck him more emotionally. I mean, would you be proud to tell someone your father was some criminal? Someone whom was greatly feared and hated for unspeakable crimes against humanity?

Finally, Luke only told Leia who their father was. Luke told no one else. Leia told no one else except for the fact to Han that Luke and her are siblings. To me, this was a secret formed between Luke and Leia regarding Vader. Luke may have matured a lot over the trilogy, but doesn’t mean he’s not without flaws, and perhaps him being not open about his confrontation with his father is one of them.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I get the criticism about the lack of a Han - Kylo interaction, but for me, the reason it was emotional for me is because going into the film, I was hoping Han would die since Harrison has wanted that since the end of Empire going into Rotj. A character whom somehow always lucked out. Add onto how I’ve grown up watching these films over and over that these characters are pretty much ingrained in my mind. So while the writers did a shoddy job with the setup (or lack of) between Kylo and Han, I still felt this emotional tug since I’m seeing one of my favorite characters die in front of me. I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but man, I was thinking back to his great scenes in a ‘flash’ before my eyes. I KNEW it was coming in that sequence, yet I was suckered into it. I’m glad Harrison Ford got his wish all these years. I think knowing that fact just built up inside my mind going in and actually seeing it happen was pretty… riveting.

Still, I DO understand where people like Alderaan are coming from. That scene could had been better managed indeed.

“Don’t know that he’s conventionally movie-star handsome, but he’s interesting looking, not unattractive, and by the way he’s half-naked in Girls all the time and ugly he’s not.”

Not sure how to feel about this…lol.

Granted, maybe I’m in the wrong since I never actually attempted to download any of the files (data caps man). Maybe it blocks you from using the download links if not validated, but not sure how that would be the case.

Edit: Welp, appears even you can get your account working, the recent posters are saying most of the links are missing/broken now. So never mind then.

Edit 2: There’s an updated thread with working links. If you cannot get a validated account and unable to use the search function, go to that guide, click the original thread link to Tehparadox it gives. Then, scroll to the bottom where the “Tags” are listed. Click “harmy” and it will take you to another page where it lists all the threads containing the word harmy. Click the second thread link, and there you go, updated links.

Star Wars (ANH) makes no sense Logically, therefore it's good Cinematically - (YouTube video "Plot Holes and Artistic License in Star Wars" Discussion.)
Time

I liked the overall message of this guy was aiming for. I’ve thought to myself countless times, “Is it… is it feasible to make a movie/story in general without ‘plotholes’?” but honestly, that video put some things into perspective. Star Wars couldn’t be the same if we’re bogged down in technical stuff of how “x” works. Through “artistic licence”, you can have a fanatical setting without explaining much so long as you create an emotional draw into the story via characters and the rhythm of things.
It absolutely doesn’t mean you haphazardly throw up a setting and hope the characters do the rest, but you can certainly get away with a lot as he mentioned.

P.S. I also found his video about how artistically screen wipes were used in Star Wars. It does bug me at times though that he uses the SE versions for the base of his Star Wars analysis and his somewhat lacking knowledge on certain things, but there’s still some merit to the commentary.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Dammit, I always forget something!

Yes okay, the Rancor. I know this comes across as defensive, but to be fair, the Rancor effects were pretty darn good for its time and in my opinion hasn’t aged that bad (I’ll admit it feels a little fake when it’s holding Luke).

Rathars seem just tossed in and used halfheartedly. I think it would had been better managed if say the Rathars pulled a ANH trash compactor stunt. You hear the eerie sounds of them, and then seconds later, the tentacles wrap around the ‘bad guys’ from under the vents. Cue time for the heroes to make a escape while we leave behind the monsters and let them deal with Han’s debt collectors! Just got too excessive for that sequence to partially eat Finn.

(PS. the Wampas was originally meant to have a few funny moments in the deleted scenes from ESB where they attack Echo base, are locked in a room, and eventually released on the stormtroopers by C-3PO.)

It speaks volumes though when you consider they are indeed, “deleted scenes.” It came across as incredibly cheesy.

Edit: Silly “mistake”

I’ve mentioned it before, but in my opinion, most* of the time, when there’s an animalistic berserk animal in Star Wars, you don’t see the entirety of it. You just get just enough of the creature to sell the illusion it’s a real threatening monster. That’s why the SE monsters feel so out of place and cheap, like the Sarlacc beak addition. You see way too much of it! In TFA, you see those CGI monsters in all its glory in a hyperactive manner. Then it goes even further to let this CGI creation physically drag one of our main characters around in similar manner you’d see in Men in Black as a gag.

*I suppose the only exception would be the space slug

Sorry ray, but that doesn’t mean much to me. I’ve been a member here for 10 years now. Comments I once would’ve taken as a joke or sarcasm turn out not to be so anymore. I guess I’m just a worrier by nature.

If I may ask, why are you so bent on what Adywan does? As if Adywan has this power and access to the OT you remember but denies it to you?

Can you not just stick with Harmy’s work instead? The version that simply aims to preserve the OOT in the best quality possible?

I did it! Completed the LotR trilogy!

I initially posted that watching Fellowship of the Ring extended edition was quite a bore to me, but I was able to sit through the other two movies no issue via extended versions.

I’m not sure I could rate these yet though. I do not know the lore of LotR/The Hobbit well to fully judge it. Nonetheless, an interesting, thrilling, and adventurous slice of Middle Earth’s history!

May I ask why? If Snoke is Plagueis that means that the Greatest Sith Lord in Galactic History was merely a pawn in what could be a much more labyrinthine scheme. I like it.

I would hate it because it means Vader’s great sacrifice at the end of RotJ is meaningless. The Emperor should be the ONLY puppeteer at the time. Vader killing him sounds less impressive now if the Emperor was yet ANOTHER pawn.

I’m not sure what the best way for this Snoke guy to be dealt with story wise, but I’d rather him be simply a Sith that studied the rise and fall of the Empire. Maybe he looked up to the Emperor but saw where the Emperor was flawed, so in comes Snoke with a bigger ego that he can do better. Him being the master of the Emperor and pulling even more strings… blah.

To be completely honest, I have no idea how Snoke looked in the film. When I got to the theater, the only seating available was way at the bottom on the far left. Whenever I saw Snoke, it was so damn dark and never saw the details people elaborate on. Yes, I’ve seen the art floating around of his deformed face, but I still wasn’t able to see how his face moved/overall look on screen.

Yeah, why didn’t Vader do this on the Blockade Runner either?

Kylo Ren could freeze that blaster bolt since that was the only threat to him and he could focus just on that. A Force user trying to do impressive stuff with many things going on leaves them vulnerable to being attacked from multiple sides. Imagine Yoda trying to stop a whole fleet of Star Destroyers while laser bombardment rained on his location. I don’t think he could do it with so much chaos.

And, well, that’s how we wound up with this:

I thought I was being nice enough not to bring up the PT when the discussion was driven primarily with the OT.

Yes, the PT is inherently contradictory.
