Return Of The Jedi - a general Random Thoughts thread

What some people don’t realize with Lynch is how close he came. He was actually Lucas’s number one choice ahead of Marquand but ended up pulling out.

Looking at Dune (1984) what happened with him on that film could’ve happened with ROTJ: no artistic control, no final cut priviledge, and pressure from Lucas to “do it this way”.

I’m with Gary Kurtz in that the DSII and going back to Tatooine were too derivative to ANH. I also believe that like him the ending should’ve been bittersweet with the Rebels winning but with heavy casualties and few survivors (just like in the Battle of Yavin it didn’t have everyone making it afterwards for a happier ending).

About the title: since it was originally Revenge of the Jedi, it never was about Vader.

According to the Empire of Dreams doc, it was originally Return, but when a producer said it was a weak title, George changed it to Revenge, before deciding to change it back to Return saying “a Jedi doesn’t take revenge.” Which is true, not only in “the Jedi ways”, but in the film itself. There is no Jedi who takes revenge, but there is a Jedi who returns…

I dunno if mine is the intended meaning of the title or not, but I think my reasoning is sound, I’ve seen nothing that negates my idea & I’m yet to see a better explanation.
Luke bringing Annikin back is really what the story in this movie is about, so wouldn’t that be what the title is referring to?

I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts. What do you think the title means?

I always thought the title referred to Luke. With Yoda and Obi-wan gone and Vader being with the dark side, Luke was the only one left and with his training completed the Jedi were now back with him being it. The title couldn’t refer to Anakin because he dies at the end. If he lived then it’d be a different story.

Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)

Here’s another one.

Basically all these are this: HDR to LOG conversion, Custom LOG to Kodak 2283 LUT (previously built for TPM Blu-ray based originally intended for LOG footage converted from SDR), AI Sharpen, Film Grain

I still need to tweak the HDR to LOG conversion to better take advantage of the enhanced dynamic range and bit depth, same applies to the KODAK 2283 LUT. AI Sharpen settings have to be tweaked shot by shot. Film grain settings just basic right now, needs more tweaking.

That looks fantastic!

Could you show a comparison of that shot with the original on framecompare to really show the difference?

Apologies if anyone else commented on this previously, but I wonder if LFL/Disney intend to sit on the unreleased footage from Ep. IV etc. and the OT editions until the 50th anniversary of Star Wars?

It’s a horrible thought, but maybe they are already thinking ahead to 2027?

That’s when the 8K versions will be released so probably.

Also besides Greedo saying “Ma Klounkee” and a new sky on Tatooine, what are the other new changes done for the 19SE?

doubleofive did a trilogy of articles on the changes for the 2019 SE / Disney+ version of the Original Trilogy on ‘The Digital Bits’ website. They are linked below, along with some changes yotsuya has also found:-

Changes to the Disney+ 2019 SE of the Original Trilogy

and also in the 1st post of doubleofive’s fantastic Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes thread in the ‘Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases’ forum; with more info on the various changes, including the 2019 SE, such as 13las’ great videos too.

doubleofive’s site - https://starwarsviscomp.wordpress.com, and his SWVC twitter - https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp are well worth a look at too.

So many new changes for the OT, but are there any new changes for the PT? If not, I’d find that interesting.

Was RO shot on film or digital?

Digital.

Ep.7-9 however were shot on film.

Looking at RO now I would never believe it.

Personally I think it looks distinctly digital (not a bad thing) but it’s probably the lens choice that’s tricking you, I’d imagine.

That and the really good digital coloring.

How does the technology from what's shown in the PT lead to what's depicted in the OT?
Time

A common misconception that everyone thinks is that after the Empire came to be the Rebels didn’t have access to the technology shown in the PT and were forced to use old ships when it’s not like that at all.

The setting of the OT is meant to be depicted as a used up future as shown in John Carpenters Dark Star (1974).

It’s the PT that got it wrong. The ST justifies this with it’s ship designs being influenced by the OT as it makes no sense chronologically how you go from this

To this

The heart of what made the OT what it is were Ralph McQuarrie’s art designs.

Reconstructing the prequels from what was implied in the original trilogy

This would be akin to the Nazis winning WWII and the last rabbi is in hiding but still dressed like an ultra-orthodox on his way to temple.

To help understand what the Jedi were like look at it as a rabbi with the honor code and sword fighting techniques of a Samurai.

Another thing to reconstruct is the line “I haven’t gone by the name Obi-Wan since, oh, before you were born”. This would mean that Obi-wan left the Jedi Order before the fall of the Jedi and would explain how he survived it.

What's your take on Emperor Palpatine being brought back for The Rise of Skywalker?
Time

Personally, I didn’t like the idea of the Emperor being brought back like that when he was clearly killed at the end of ROTJ.

To me the film should’ve been with just Kylo being the main villain throughout the film without him second guessing himself with the ending being a final duel between him and Rey.
