I have a terrible feeling that a series of treatments I read a few years ago are going to become a reality...

What treatments did you read a few years ago?

Something with R.O.U.S.es, Luke getting his true hand reattached, Luke and Vader being cloned, and a Black Hole machine.

They were very stupid if I remember them right.

And every web critic out there keeps talking about how awful they are.  They are often mentioned in the same breath as Batman and Robin and the Transformers movies.  My close friends all like them but Darth Ender's post was the first time I had seen anything positive about them online and it seems most people cite them as proof that Peter Jackson is a no talent hack who got lucky with the Lord of the Rings films. So yeah I would say they are under rated.

I actually like them a lot more when I meditate on them. I love the fact that they portray things like the White Council, foreshadowing things like Saruman already knowing about the Ring, and Gandalf going to Dol Guldur. They do have some silly or tiring (that barrel chase was way too long, if you ask me) things within them, but... They're not problems that don't exist within the original films. They might be a bit more prominent, but it's not like they only just started in these films. I am looking forward to Battle of the Five Armies quite a bit!

Well, due to a recent class I've taken, I took to watching a bunch of interpretations of the Arthurian legend... Oh boy...

King Arthur (2004)

OK, let's start... This film is historical bogus. And I wouldn't be bothered by this if the film didn't so openly claim to be historical. This is based on the Sarmatian Cavalry theory, which has almost no basis in fact except for the fact that there is a person out there who was named Artorius Castos, but all factual mentions of Arthur place him about 300 years after that man existed (Arthur also has the name Ambrosius Aurelius).

But, besides that, this film is just dull. Very dull. The only scene I truly remember is a wordless discussion between the knights, which is quite possibly the only scene in the film that doesn't suffer the terrible pacing or dialogue problems.

Gawain and the Green Knight (1991)

Eh, it's alright. It represents the story rather well, but the whole flashback structure throws me off.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1978)

Ugh...

This book is unfilmable. It's an absolute masterpiece, but it's highly unsuitable to the process of dramatization. This only proves that.

This has neither the intelligence nor the writing prowess, nor even the story of the original. It sucks.

Excalibur (1981)

....

I liked it. A lot. I'm getting some David Lynch's Dune vibes from this... Which is fortunate since I enjoy David Lynch's Dune.

It clearly represented and understood the Arthur mythos, and considering other films I've seen, that's about as much as I can ask.

The nature "new age" stuff can get kind of grating, but it's not in there that much, and it didn't detract from the true nature of the story.

Part of me wishes Chewie stayed on the Falcon with Lando for the big battle in ROTJ

Wow great idea, I'd like to slip into an alternate dimension to see that one in action.

I had that idea for a ROTJ rewrite once. It was going to be the moment that Han finally accepted Lando as a friend once more, and allowed him to take both the Falcon and Chewie for the air strike, on the condition that they return alive and in one piece.

This all taking place on Endor, of course.

A Modern Re-Intepretation of Star Wars

Well, then just have Vader kill Anakin instead. If the Vader in the OT wasn't Anakin, imagine what would have happened in episode 6.

First, there's Obi-Wan and Luke's talk on Dagobah. Obi-Wan could go on to mention Vader's past and warn Luke of his anger towards Vader. Luke would have a conflict between his Jedi teachings and wanting to bring justice to Vader.

Then, there's the final duel. Luke would probably forgive Vader of his crimes and Vader could kill Palpatine. Either Vader dies, he survives and goes into exile, or he survives and helps Luke rebuild the Jedi. That or either Luke kills both Vader and Palpatine.

See, along with several other little changes, that would be the biggest change of my version.

It sounds so much more interesting, if you ask me.

Well, almost everyone will say "get rid of Jar Jar." But besides that, here's one thing I would do different: clone Anakin Skywalker and name that clone Darth Vader.

What this would do is place Obi-Wan as the main character as he trains Darth Vader. Anakin would already by a Jedi at this point. There would be a slightly tension between Anakin and Vader as the two progress through the Clone Wars. At the end, Anakin kills his clone and becomes the Darth Vader we all know.

Speaking of which, the Clone Wars would start to change differently as Vader was the only cloned Jedi to survive the cloning process. The Separatists would attempt to make their own cloned Force-sensitives. This would shift the Clone Wars more to Zahn's version as described in the Thrawn Trilogy, the Separatists soon being called the Clone Masters.

That's all I have right. I'm actually working on a story for this idea, but I have no idea if it might turn out to actually be good. Do you think it might work?

I actually meant more ALL of the films, meaning the original trilogy too.

Intro to Film
Time

I'd start by explaining what my favorite film is (I'd probably use The Third Man as my example) and give reasons why, then ask them each their own, and ask them to describe what it is they like about it.

I'd spend the rest explaining what makes a good film, all using classic films as visual references.

I got that Nerd Rage
Time

The Giver looks f*cking awful.

I don't think this is the first time I've mentioned this, but after seeing it again, I really am quite angry.

Admittedly, I don't know if this is taking anything from the sequels or not, but...

The book is a small, quiet, intimate story about two people connecting and a boy learning about the atrocity that is his culture.

The movie looks like another damned insurrection movie (like we haven't had enough of those already) with a scale far too large and unjustified.

I mean, come on with some of this stuff.

Meryll Streep as a high-up official talking in condescending speech to one of the 'perpetrators'? (WHO WERE NEVER FOUND OUT IN THE BOOK!!!!)

Joanna in some sort of containment?

Jonas and Gabe escaping in a DESERT?!? And being abducted by a bland hovercraft?

God I hate hollywood sometimes...

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the KIng (2003)

I have to confess… this was my first viewing. I hadn't watched past film 2 for so long, and, now that I have watched it...

I can't believe what I was missing!

While there are certain problems (slow-mo, Denethor), I felt like they really knew how to put together these movies by the end.

This was an epic, in every sense. Not just in the battle scenes (which were spectacular) but also in terms of its characters. Even though I wasn't a fan of Denethor (or his death) I will admit the final moment of him seeing Faramir alive (before running like a flaming sparkler) was pretty well done as well.

My favorite scene is either the charge of the Black Gates, or, strangely enough, the scene where Gandalf explains death to Pippin as the orcs begin to break through.

Must be watched. 5 of 5.

Modern Times and The Great Dictator are my favorites of his, but I cannot nor will I deny the greatness of City Lights. Also The Circus is pretty good and so is The Gold Rush, though I found the latter to be overrated.

How could I forget The Great Dictator! Yes, that one is one of his bests as well. The man knew how to make movies.

So, with the release of the deleted scenes on the Blu-Ray I figured it was time to start this edit.

But they released those scenes three years ago?

 Correct.

I have been planning to do this edit since then.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention that I will be restoring the score to Dianoga scene.

I am so excited for this, it's almost scary. I suppose you'll be doing the same for the land speeder scene?
