If GL changed his mind about releasing OUT, but with a few tweaks.....
Time

I don't buy any of this stuff that the original version can't be restored b/c of the negatives. The original versions can be reconstructed. Use the best materials available - the YCM restoration, the separation masters, the IPs, George's Technicolor print, whatever. (And has anyone ever confirmed if the negatives for ESB and ROTJ were in as bad condition as the original? I've only ever actually heard reference to the negative for the first film being in that dismal condition...)

If they 8K scan the best materials, clean them up, and use George's prints as a reference to edit them together and properly time them (for example, taking the SE restoration and cutting in the original optical composites from an IP or George's print), we could have the originals in HD. It's not a question of whether they can, it's a question of whether they will.

(And even though I bet it's not going to happen, I'd love to see the pre-tweaked Indy films on Blu-ray also. Since the changes to those films were minor, it won't be anywhere nearly as bad if they were excluded, but still...)

Why do you think he does it?
Time

Agreed about the insecurity and the Michael Jackson analogy. I really do believe that he has the same general kind of issues MJ had (albeit not as severe), and like MJ, he has allowed his wealth and success to insulate him from reality and common sense. And at least MJ didn't alter his songs and bury the originals.

And I'd be willing to excuse him if he'd just let me have the original versions in high-quality HD. People criticize Steven Spielberg for some of the same things as Lucas, but at least he understands the significance of the original versions of his films.

I wish George would listen to Steven on this...

Help: looking for... The Land Before Time (1988) - full original uncut version
Time

I don't believe that the uncut version was ever shown in Finland. The scenes were cut from the negative before the film was released in theaters; why would an uncut version get sent to Finland, a country where a lot of movies were subjected to additional censorship until the last couple of decades? If Universal ever distributed the uncut version, it would have shown up in a less obscure country than Finland.

From the comments I read on some YouTube video once (which was taken down), I think the "uncut in Finland" rumor started because it was actually the standard version, without additional censorship by the Finnish censors, which aired on TV in Finland.

I don't think the deleted scenes have ever been seen by the public (except for test audiences back in 1988) - similar to The Black Cauldron deleted scenes, I think they're either destroyed, lost, or misplaced.

Help: looking for... The Land Before Time (1988) - full original uncut version
Time

I think this claim that the uncut version was shown on TV in Germany or Finland or whatever is just a myth. From what I can understand, the cuts were made to the negative, and the deleted scenes were either thrown away/destroyed, or are languishing in some vault at Universal.

But if your copy really is the uncut version, it will be at least 75 minutes (accounting for PAL speedup - I've read that 11 minutes were cut from the film).

Look at this site, it has some pictures of deleted scenes that were used in promotional materials: http://gangoffive.net/ar/t1443.htm

I know that originally, Littlefoot discovered the Great Valley himself. I think there's also a part in the Sharptooth fight where they get trapped under his foot or something?

I'm skeptical, but take a look at your copy, maybe it *is* longer...

The Vaultbreakers Collection - Disney Preservations
Time

Are any of these preservations available? I'd really like to obtain laserdisc rips of the Disney animated features that are different on DVD, rather than have to blow a bunch of money on a player and actual LDs.

I love the way the colors on the laser versions looked - the DVD versions often have flattened contrast and just don't look "film" enough. I'd love to see the laserdisc rip of Beauty and the Beast, or the LD rip of Cinderella, etc., but I can only find dead torrents online...

Idea: ESB and ROTJ Japanese Special Collection LDs - a new preservation?
Time

Hello,

I was going back and looking at the old Dark/Sega rips of the JSC LDs, and I really think that there needs to be some kind of new preservation of them. The old rips are interlaced, 4x3, and don’t look so good.

I have seen Arnie.d’s “V8 - A Final Attempt”, which was deinterlaced and upconverted(?) and it looked darn good to me. I really wish there were something similar for ESB and ROTJ. A couple years ago, there was talk about V8, X9, something Aleksbmw was doing. But it all seems to have fallen by the wayside.

The JSCs are the best source of a non-DNR’ed pre-SE – well, the only, since the American widescreen discs were sourced from them. I’d love to see them cleaned up, without ugly combing and stuff. All the LDs from '93 and onward have good preservations, I think the JSCs deserve it too…

Info: a Smear-free '93 ?
Time

If it's up on Usenet, it's not within EasyNews' "200+ days" retention period. (Nothing against EasyNews, they have a good price and it's over the web so I don't need a newsreader program. I was able to get the Dark/Sega JSC rips, at least.)

Are Arnie.d's any better than the Dark/Sega ones? Maybe a repost would be in order for those of us who don't have access to 600+ day old posts...

Like msycamore, I don't want to keep taking this thread off-topic, just letting Mallwalker know about this...

Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?
Time

I've watched the old Dark-Sega JSC rips. The image quality and color balance really remind me of the 1987/1990 VHS releases - a tad too bright, noticeably red-boosted, etc. We had the 1990 tapes (or more specifically, the 1992 "FoxVideo" reprints), so this is what the trilogy looked like when I was watching it as a kid.

I'm assuming that both were sourced from the 1985 IP.

An Alteration to the OT that SHOULD be Done

They used the reflexive sticks in all lightsabre scenes in the original STAR WARS with like one exception, that's why Obi-Wan's lightsabre stops glowing in one of the shots where it's at a big angle.

They used the reflective sticks, yes, but they look to have been rotoscoped out in most shots. There's a couple interviews/articles out there (in Korean) where Nelson Shin talks about doing the lightsaber animation. At the time, he was working at DePatie-Freleng, who you may recall being credited for "additional optical effects."

The point is, most shots have the reflective blades covered over with roto animation.

Mono mix music edit - Did anybody notice this before?
Time

I was just listening to the mono mix, and noticed a very obvious music edit difference which nobody has seemed to ever point out before.

I used to listen to the soundtrack a lot, and many years ago I noticed that in the Death Star attack, the first note of that great Force theme fanfare when the Rebels dive was clipped off. Obviously, somewhere between scoring and the final cut, the pacing of that bit was tightened and one beat had to be removed.

However, in the mono mix, there is a different music edit. That first note is restored...but there is a new, and IMO clumsier, edit which chops off most of that great upward flourish preceding it.

Anyone ever notice this? Analyses of the mono mix always bring up the sound effects and dialogue differences, but I've never seen any mention of this different music edit!

Making of Star Wars - original Beta release
Time
Hello,

Does anybody here have the original Beta release of The Making of Star Wars?

I don't know if the 1980 reissue with the ESB trailer had it, but from what someone's told me, the original Beta of The Making of Star Wars had a completely different logo for Magnetic Video (not the "By special arrangement with 20th Century Fox" one with the cheesy 70s Muzak).

It was a static logo with the two M's over blue, with the name in the center, or something.

If anybody has it, could they possibly make a screenshot of the logo for me?

I'd appreciate the help.

Transferring help wanted for "Thief and the Cobbler" LD
Time
Well, I'm trying to get the laserdisc transferred because it actually has a better transfer of the Miramax cut (and thus a good amount of the Richard Williams scenes) than the Japanese R2 DVD; it's sharper, has better color, etc. That fan edit used the Japanese DVD mostly on the grounds that it was 16x9 enhanced.

Even if this version won't end up in a fan edit, my friend and I would like it for reference.

I don't have the time or money to buy all these things and learn all this stuff. Besides, I don't intend to have any other LDs transferred besides this, so buying all this equipment for one transfer would be a horrendous waste of money.

If and when anybody with experience and equipment has some free time, I'd be glad to utilize their services. I understand that people are busy, so I don't want to shove my way into other people's schedules. I'd like to utilize the services of someone who has what it takes, and knows what they're doing.

I don't need cleanup, color correction, or any of that. Just a straight transfer, albeit in 24p. It doesn't even need to have sound; we just need the picture.

EDIT: We've decided to try it ourselves. Thanks for the tech tips, Jaiman.

Transferring help wanted for "Thief and the Cobbler" LD
Time
Hello,

A friend and I have been trying to find a way to transfer a laserdisc of "The Thief and the Cobbler" that we got off of eBay. I keep hearing all this stuff about V800, X0, and all these weird things, and I've just decided, to heck with it, I'd rather find someone to transfer it for us than blow a bunch of money trying to obtain the optimum tools myself.

What's the optimum player, connection cables, and transfer format needed to get as perfect an LD transfer as possible, and does anybody have the tools to do it? I just need as perfect a straight transfer as I can get, with the best possible source image and transfer quality, and as little compression artifacting as possible.

I'm sure other people know about if it should be deinterlaced during the transfer, or if the transferred version can be deinterlaced, if 3:2 pulldown should be reversed during transfer, or if it can be done to the transferred version, etc. etc. etc., better than I do.

Can anybody help me?

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
Nordine had no involvement. Famed "jazz poet" Ken Nordine (who was the voice of the old Levi's ads of the 70s) was mistakenly identified as the voice of the Thief somewhere, because someone confused Jonathan Winters' voice for his. I e-mailed Ken Nordine and he told me that he wasn't involved at all.

I can still imagine those wheezes coming from Richard Williams' mouth. To me, they sound very similar in timbre and pitch to his voice. But hey, what do I know? I could be incredibly wrong...
