Reddit Q&A with Matthew Stover, author of the ROTS novelization

Haha, the Battle of Kashyyyk is entirely absent from the novel?!  That's great!  It took me three viewings of the film before I even became aware that that sequence ever took place it was so boring and pointless!

With me being probably the youngest user on this site, I remember all the marketing that went into Revenge of the Sith, and probably the biggest hyped thing (other than Darth Vader) was Kashyyyk and the wookies. It was even in the trailers. I was in like 4th grade when it came out and I remember they where releasing legos based on the film, and more than half of the legos where Kashyyyk based, not to mention the tons of other merchandising associated with the hairy things. Even when I was just 9 years old I was wondering why there was so much hype about the 2 minute scene. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the picture on the back of the DVD a picture of some clone, Yoda, and Chewbacca?

Kashyyyk is probably the best example I can think of for Lucas and his team adding stuff in the film for merchandising purposes.

Regarding the movie/novel differences, some of you might want to read this:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_III:_Revenge_of_the_Sith_%28novel%29#Notable_differences_between_the_movie_and_the_novel

The novel actually does sound much better with most of the changes, but that's just my opinion, I haven't actually read the book.

This scene is immediately followed, of course, by Leia being discovered by Wicket.  This scene has been talked about a bit as needing editing so it can keep the suspense and the reveal of the ewoks.

So what if this scene was dropped and instead we go with the rebel squal on ahead where they discover the remains of some slaughtered Imperial troops.  A bloody massacre. Maybe they could also see another group of netted stormtroopers hanging on a distant tree with a bunch of spears and arrows in them.

They try to radio Han and Luke with a warning, but they are too far out of range. Cut back to Han, Chewie and Luke waiting for word from Leia and the rest of the squad.

This gives the viewer a "What the fudge happened to those stormtroopers?" and we may get a bit more nervous for the heroes when they are staring down all those ewok spears after they cut themselves loose from their own net.

I love this...

Interesting idea, TML. It allows you to keep the Endor footage while making the story more interesting. I like.

It would also help with the idea of the Empire collapsing after Return of the Jedi, because if their capital was destroyed, that is usually a pretty good sign that their side has lost the war.

Here's my idea for the Had Abaddon thing… How about the entire Death Star II idea is ditched, instead, the space battle would take place near the surface of Had Abaddon's capital, with ships doing attack runs on many of the Imperial Buildings. (Maybe Lando could enter the Imperial Palace and destroy it's Power Core?) But to bypass the planet's shield, Han Solo and his gang have to disable the Shield Generator located on the planet's forrest moon (Or it might make more sense if the shield generator was located on Had Abaddon, but in one of the few forests left on the planet. You could add traces of the Empire starting to industrialize it, thus forming an "Ewok/ Lorax" kind of thing) The Luke battle will take place in the Imperial Palace in the Emperor's Personal Throne.

It's a very rough concept but the only major changes would be re-shooting the space battle with models, but now Endor doesn't need to be altered too much…

That would be good, claustrophobic. Only thing is people would be shooting from both barges and the likely hood of anyone escaping the initial barrage of laser bolts would be slim.

For the shooting issue, when Luke deflects a laser bolt and hits Boba, instead the reflected blast could redirect to one of the gunners on the second barge? (There's only one gunner on the barge in the movie, so there could be one gunner on Jabba's Barge and two on the second barge.) The skiffs could also be taking a lot of damage, constantly rocking when hit. Maybe the second skiff that Luke jumps off of could be sinking when he jumps?

I wouldn't be surprised if this has already been suggested, but I was looking at some Ralph McQuarrie art and this picture really stood out to me:

Notice how here the pit itself is portrayed as being much larger, almost consuming the entire skiff and some of the Sail Barge. I'm guessing this is near to impossible, but it would be pretty damn cool if some how the scene from the movie could look more like this painting. Having a huge sarlaac pit (Teehee) and even the extra Barge adds the feeling of being "surrounded" and having no escape! (But then the problem of how the other Barge gets destroyed shows up)

Again Fish, you miss the point. Jar Jar and and PT Anakin ruined the films they were IN. And that's because they sucked.

Whereas you said that improving a character that is currently as dull as they get, would somehow ruin the OT - a series of films made decades before.

PT Anakin was in ROTJSE, but other than that, I stand corrected

OH GOD! I SEE HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN STANDING ON SCREEN FOR A FEW SECONDS WITHOUT ANY DIALOGUE! DEAR GOD! F*&% YOU LUCAS! YOU RUINED THE ENTIRE FILM! I TAKE BACK EVERYTHING I LIKED ABOUT IT BEFORE HE SHOWED UP! THERE IS NO GOD!

I'll be honest, while I don't like Hayden being replaced with Sebastian Shay, but did didn't ruin the whole film for me. NOW 'DEM EWOKS ON THE OTHER HAND! THEY RUINED EVERYTHING ABOUT MY LIFE!

Off camera, she has given the baby girl to Bail Organa (who also needs to be a more rough and tumble Han Solo type rather than the dull Senator he's written as in the prequels)

no, he should not be like han solo at all, that would ruin the OT

I love how some people believe that one little character could possibly "ruin a whole film series". Are these films really that fragile?

(Raiders of the Lost Ark arguably has a similar kind of moment when Indy uses the staff to find the location of the Well of Souls.)

The cinematography in that movie is a work of art. I love the 3 Indy films, but Raiders is the one that I think is perfect.

I hate to go off topic but....

The biggest problem I had with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the cinematography, with all the "Solar Glares" and the "Dirty Camera" (I think this only happened once). This isn't a documentary and wasn't in any other films. I'm fine with the "Nuking of the Fridge" (Always seemed very Indiana Jones-ish if he was in the 50's to me) and the CGI Ants (Monkeys I didn't care for...), but I really don't like those new cliches in movies popping up in one of my favorite film series. Despite what I said, I still enjoyed the film, even with those problems. I can't wait for someone to correct me on how wrong I am for liking the film and how it was "raping" Indiana!

Ok, sorry about that and back to the topic!

My fave is the Stormtrooper 4th from the left, bottom first row!!

He always stood out to me!!

Pff! Don't make me laugh! We all know that Stormtrooper SF-5329 stole the show! The way he stands... It's so majestic... It's like watching a unicorn stand on top of a mountain while drinking from a goblet filled with the laughter of small children! That was the define moment of my life, seeing him stand, and my God, did he stand...

I have no idea if this has been mentioned in the thread yet (If it was, I'm sorry, don't take it personally) but I love when RLM gets something wrong (Boba Fett/ Jango Fett) or doesn't mention something (NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!) and fans will try to correct him and complain about it. (Look at the comments on his Youtube videos! You'll see tons of them!). He obviously does that on purpose to mess with fans! I'm amazed at all the people on Youtube who don't understand that!

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm just going off of a Youtube video I watched), but the infamous "Wilhelm Scream" is present in The Empire Strikes Back, but it's barely audible (When Chewbacca throws the Storm Trooper off the ledge at the Bespin Freezing Chamber). This is just a fun little suggestion, but it would be nice to have the scream louder so you can actually hear it or insert it into a different scene. (Hoth maybe?)

Ah, hello there. Long time lurker, first time poster, well almost at least.

The Wilhelm scream IS actually in the Hoth battle, when that "radar-laser" cannon gets fried in the beginning of the battle.

About 16 seconds in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhpS69eAXrU

Cheers

Oh, so it is! Must be a variation of the scream. It might be a good idea to use some of the different variations in Return of the Jedi, because the scream is used like 3 times throughout the film. (The Ben Burtt cameo should be the only one who uses the "famous" version in my opinion)
