The Star Wars Mono-logy (a 3-in-1 OT Edit: hard drive failure ended the project)

One more idea!

Since you seem pretty hot on FX, the "Not this ship sister" scene could easily read as a post landing scene (Han taking off his gloves and the general debriefing-esque nature of the dialogue helps). If you added sound of the Falcons engines powering down a bit of Hoth base radio chatter and general hubbub in the background it would really sell it. But the difficult bit is you'd need to do this FX shot...

(^ a VERY quick mockup I did)

Those FX shots are genius, simple yet perfect. Nice job!!!!

But I think it still feels a bit like two films spliced. I believe you need a couple of scenes on the Hoth base before cutting away to Vader to truly sell the concept that one narrative is flowing into the other. After the last shot of the Falcon in flight over Hoth do a wipe into Han walking through the Hoth hanger with Chewie doing repairs. He then walks into the command room but just skip right over his talk with Riken (I checked the scene, it would be sooo easy to remove). So he strolls in, gives Leia a thoughful look and then tells her he's leaving. Then they have the corridor argument (Without the Ordmantel line).

This would be very similar to the Yavin hanger scene from ANH where he's telling Luke he's leaving. If this is still supposed to be flighty Han from ANH (And not 1 year later best buddy Han) then it would be natural for him to leave the rebels as soon as Chewie has fixed the damage from the Tie-Fighter attack. It's only his growing love for Leia and the sudden assault by the Empire that stops him from leaving as planned.

Remember there will be no sudden heroic rescue of Luke during the trench run that shows us that Han has changed. In this edit, and at that point in the narrative he still should be a bit selfish and still be argueing like cats and dogs with Leia.

That's how I see it anyway.

Then cut away to Vader as planned (But with smoothed edges on the wipe).

Infact... I think it may just be possible to cut from the flying Falcon into the corridor scene of 3PO telling R2 it's freezing* (Nice bit of scene setting exposition) they then walk up to Han and tell him Leia wants to see him. Remove the middle of the scene mentioning Luke and splice that with the end of the hanger scene I mentioned and continue as above.

*Plus 3PO mentions that he can't dry out Leia's clothes... because they are still wet from the garbage-masher! Plus this would help explain away the costume changes as 3PO is telling us in passing that the characters have had (And needed) time to change.

Doctor Who
Time

All this talk of regeneration made me wonder has a time-lord ever topped his/herself in the Doctor Who EU (Or in the show for that matter)?

I could imagine situations where a Timelord wanted to escape into anonymity and forget their face. Also as regenerations seem to involve some memory loss, change of attitude etc I think temporary-suicide would be quite appealing given the right tragic situation.

If I paid for it, and the studio got a cut of the money I paid for (i.e. I bought it new, not used), then I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I want with it.  They got my money, so whether I still have the disc or not isn't any of their damn business.

And I'm certainly not making any profit by selling them - I'm still losing a decent chunk of change (if I get 50% of what I paid for it back, that's way above average), and that money's not being taken away from the studios at all.  They still got their percentage from me.

If there's legal ramifications to that, they can charge me or sue me, but they can be damn sure I'll fight it until I win or can't fight anymore.

It's still stealing. If you sold all your DVDs 2nd hand but retained copies of all those movies then you're depriving the artists of the revenue from the sale of that full-priced copy to the next person.

Not that I'm necassarily saying I disagree with what you've done or am against some pirating but I thought I should point that out because it sounded like you were mistakenly under the impression that you were doing zero harm to the movie business.

I pirate some stuff but I also spend every penny I can afford on films (I have hundreds, so many infact that I dare not count them lol) so I'm happy that my pirating isn't costing the industy anything. e.g. anything I pirate is just stuff I would NEVER buy anyway. Pirating is cool IMO as long as you are realistic about it and make some kind of contribution.

For the record, a few of my favorite films...

The Third Man (1949)

Solaris (1972)

Metropolis (1927)

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Theatrical Cut) (1977)

Blade Runner (Workprint) (1982)

Citizen Kane (1941)

Jaws (1975)

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

… and I'm thirteen.

It's a question of taste, not age.

Jesus christ, that's impressive viewing for 13. ^ Some of my favourite movies (Especially anything with Orson Welles involvement... Kino Lorber's Restored Blu-Ray of 'The Stranger' is on it's way from Amazon right now, huzzah!) except 2001 which is excruciatingly tedious, lifeless and overrated. Love all other Kubrick films but not that.

btw Watched Hobbit2 for a second time this evening. Really enjoyed it much more than the first viewing where I was probably over analysing everything. The CGI gold and the ending still sucks ass but the rest is fantastic. Martin Freeman is so good as Bilbo, he should have been in every shot.

You can just use the audio of Ben saying go to the Dagobah system over another shot like how it is used numerous times in the final act of ANH. You just need the right shot of Luke. Maybe something as simple as over a shot of Luke in the cockpit and then he instantly tells R2 he's going off to Dagobah.

Either that or dream sequence.

Maybe he has a vision or hears the voice while he's staring into space on board the falcon wrapped in the blanket post Ben's death.

Or could footage of Luke in the cot from the end of ESB be used as if he's sleeping on board the Falcon/Hoth and tricked into footage of him waking up from a fevered dream where Ben tells him about Yoda.

Or could the original footage be used but cut in straight after Luke drops into the Snow after blowing up the AT-AT.

What about cutting from the Falcon escaping DS1 to various bits of footage from ESB of Vader saying "I want that ship not excuses" to his underlings and "My lord, we have them" "the rebels are there" etc etc. Maybe even have Vader blame Captain Needa for the Falcon escaping the DS1.

They could blast out of the DS1, fly past the imperial fleet (Buzzing Needa's tower) and go into hyperspace.

btw Leia actually says the Empire are tracking the Falcon without the need to have Tarkin repeat it. She could be saying this after they've jumped to Hyperspace. The Falcon Turret fight could take place before they jump.

Or what if there is no tracking beacon, The Falcon hides ammongst the Imperial fleet and Vader has to call in Boba Fett who tracks them to Hoth (Rather than Bespin). It would be cool if Boba Fett was a co-villian with Vader as he'd appear throughout the narrative this way in more concentrated way than he does in the OT.

Will Luke be making only one trip to Dagobah and if so will Yoda survive?

I'd given this 3-into-1 idea some thought myself so I'm very happy somebody is gonna do it.

IMO I'd open cut to Vader arriving on DSII early and intoduce Jerjerrod as the Moff and not Tarkin. Cushing is awesome obviously but his superiority to Vader would be hard to understand in an 120min movie. Plus if you're gonna cut him to the bone why not cut him completely.

Here's an idea to get round the Tarkin destroying Alderaan problem... open with Alderaan being destroyed by Vader. He could order it from on board his Star Destroyer and then we see him chasing Leia on the Tantive IV. I've always wondered what happened before the first shot of ANH so it would be cool to find out.

Perhaps shots from the Endor battle and a few select shots from the Coruscant ROTS battle could be used to show the battle above Alderaan. There are a number of shots of a rebel blockade runner in the ROTJ battle which would prove handy.

True I haven't quite figured out how you then resolve the problem of the boys heading off to Alderaan anyway but I'll give it more thought.

Episode IV: A Ridiculous Hope
Time

I was reading that Lucas originally wanted Orson Welles for Vader which would have been very cool, so what if you dubbed Vader with The Brain from 'Pinky and The Brain' as that's a perfect spoof of Orson's voice.

After all what does Vader do every night? "Try to take over the world!"

Handily P&TB did a SW spoof episode that could be mined for SW specific words...

^ 'Polish National Catholic' that sounds serious! Some beautiful churches in Poland (Krakow anyway) btw.

I notice alot of people like the "Hate the sin but love the sinner" quote when it comes to homosexuality. Personally I think it's because it's a nice way to tell themselves that they aren't really prejudiced against gays.

But let me give an example of "Hate the sin but love the sinner" and see if anybody thinks it sounds right? If somebody were to say...

"I don't hate Jews, infact I love Jews.. it's just people who speak Hebrew, pray in Synagogues and who celebrate Hanukkah that I really hate".

Sorry but that ^ would be totally unexceptable and makes no sense whatsover! So why is it exceptable in respect to homosexuality?

The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint (* unfinished project - lots of info *)
Time

A QUESTION FOR THE OT.COM HIVE MIND! ;-)

I was listening to one of the commentaries for ANH and it mentioned that the decision to have 'the Death Star be baring down on Yavin' while the X-Wing assault is taking place was a late post-production thought (To increase the drama).

This is supported by none of the cast mentioning it and the proximity of the DS only being refrenced in a few FX shots, cutaways and dubbed on radio chatter.

But I checked my January '76 4th draft script and that portion is as we see in the film, radio chatter and all. If it was a choice only made after principle photography had wrapped, is their an earlier script that reflects this? A shooting script? Plus was it intended to have a sequence of the X-Wings jumping in-and-out of hyperspace like in ROTJ?

Just something I was considering restoring to 'The Lost Cut'.

Of course, what constitutes "nasty" always varies from person to person.

Maybe dangerous or harmful are more politically correct terms.
