Complaining about the crushed hands in that story is like complaining about the cooked Anakin and the forced amputation of Luke's hand in a film series with Ewoks and Gungans.

It's worrying yes but Doctor Who has a history of worrying the crap out of small kids.

Kids like being scared by TV and film (I did anyway). I loved 'Watership Down' from as early as I can remember and that's got blood and guts fountaining all over the place. But with Doctor Who you get used to certain conventions and I thought this pushed the viloence envelope. You can't really compare Luke's hand in ESB to the mentioned episode. If Vader had held Luke down and slowly and deliberately (Instead of acting in a flash of anger) sawed off Luke's hand while Luke screamed and blood dripped everywhere, you'd have a point. Plus we'd already seen Kenobi lopping off a guys arm in ANH. But yes Anakin getting cooked did seem like a new height/depth of violence in Star Wars (I didn't have a problem with it though).

This worried me when I was a Time Tot :

Mason Verger for six year olds at teatime.

I almost got that ^ out of the library yesterday but went for another two Leela stories instead (Including her introduction) so I'll have to see how scary the Master/Skeletor is on my next visit.

The Doctor being trapped while a Dalek suddenly started hovering up the stairs in 'Remembrance of the Daleks' was my all time scariest moment.

You know what, there were a few moments in that serial that scared the cr*p out of me. Like the half-dead Dalek strangling The Doctor...

Other top scares would be, agggh, yuck what is that...

No, no Bertie Bassett is supposed to my friend, not a phychotic killer...

Yeeargh melting slug thing...

and the description of the "Smell" of the rotting flesh, is combined with this image grossed me out...

I take it all back, Doctor Who is violent and horrific from start to finish (Yay!) ;-)

Star Wars prequels were mapped out in 1981, only nothing like the way they turned out

^ & ^^ Hmm interesting. I hadn't considered the way the force works when squared against Palpatine's end game, before.

If they Jedi inherit their powers through the bloodline, then wiping them out would be key as they could never return.

If anybody can be a Jedi providing they are taught/learn about the force then this is also a good reason to wipe them out. But you'd also need to erase them from existence and from all knowledge.

The fact that Han barely remembers the Jedi in ANH, suggests that Palpatine commited a cultural, as well as a literal genocide of the Jedi, leaning towards the second interpretation. But then Palpatine is affraid of Luke's inherited powers in ESB and ROTJ, suggesting the first.

I'd go with both. Anybody can be taught the force but some are more naturally gifted with it.

TAS2 Podcast (Contains spoilers)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QY-y0lP3Hc

^ Hilarious stuff complete with voice impressions that had be crying with laughter.

They seem to conclude that TAS2 is an incoherant mess with a terrible script but still pretty fun despite the huge flaws. They conclude that it's the 'Superman3' of Spiderman films ;-)

So I'm still on the fence as to wether I want to go see it.

Still seems to be very WIP, and clearly is cropped from the full 2:35:1 aspect ratio.

Still too early to tell how this will turn out...

All the bleeping, wooshing and constantly moving camera had me exhausted after 30 seconds but it still looks better than Clone Wars.

I skipped forward to Colin Baker's 'Attack of the Cybermen' which I don't think I'd seen before. So it was a nice surprise to see the return of the Lytton character (I've watched him about a hundred times in 'Resurrection of the Daleks'). However, it's a bit of mixed bag IMO.

The direction by Matthew Robinson is some of the best I've seen in classic Who. Cybermen get repeatedly decapitated throughout but the effect is so well shot and edited, that you can barely believe they didn't kill several Cybermen stunt-performers in the process ;-)

The alien lanscape (Another quarry) is shot and colour graded in this bleak and convincing way.

In my opinion, the violence went a bit too far a 'kids show' with a character having his hands crushed until blood is running all over the floor. Plus The Doctor stabs a Cyberman through the heart (If they have hearts) and then caps a load of them with a (Gasp!) gun. Also, having all the characters you've been following all needlessly killed by the end, seemed a tad mean spirited of writer Eric Saward.

I'm not a fan of the (then) new double 45-minute episode format as I really like my Who cliffhangers. The refrences back to old adventures was fun, seeing the Tardis' chameleon-circuit finally work was groovey and the "Borg-before-the-Borg" Cyberman converter things were interesting to see.

I can't decide if I want to see TAS2.

I think I'm somewhat unique in finding the first Raimi Spiderman entirely bland, the second Raimi Spiderman so bad that I nearly walked out of the cinema (Never bothered with S3) but I really enjoyed TAS1, however, it didn't linger long in the mind.

Reviews of TAS2 have been mixed (They were mixed for TAS1 as well) but the footage I've seen looks great.

? To spend or not to spend ?

^^^ That should go in the best meme's ever thread x-D

Watched the Tom Baker, Leela and K-9 serial 'The Sun Makers'. It's a satire on galloping bureaucracy exactly like Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil'... only 8 years before 'Brazil' was filmed ;-)

The Doctor and Leela arrive on Pluto in mankind's future, where the human race are enslaved to insane and draconian tax laws, admistered by the all powerful 'Collector' and his obsequious number-two 'The Gatherer'.

Both parts are played with gusto by Richard Leech and Henry Woolf. Woolf plays the twisted 'Collector' like a cross between a demented Denis Healey (No accident, he was the Chancellor at the time) and an even more insane Dr. Strangelove.

Leela's part is so well written in this story that I could have quite happily just watched "The Leela and K-9 Show" and forgotten about The Doctor (But Baker is terrific too). She's like a grenade tossed into this repressed society and soon she's threatening to "Split" and "Fillet" various people with her knife and leading an armed insurrection. It was the best element of the serial. For example...

The fact that it ends with the Doctor helping the "Goodies" to murder 'The Gatherer' in cold-blood, felt a bit odd. Writer Robert Holmes must have really, really hated the Taxman at the time (It was the 70s after all) ;-)

Why not make the Hutt Empire the main adversary of the ST? It'd be interesting to see the Hutts invade the fragmented Empire/burgeoning New Republic and try to take control of their worlds. Frankly, it'd also be cool to see armies made up of Hutts who like this

This is a brilliant idea, duracell! I cannot put into words how much I love this idea!

For Gods' sake no! The ST would be wall-to-wall CGI then. With the greatest will in the world you can't do whole armies of imoveable puppet Hutts.

Good to know your still working on this. Your new version definitly seems like it will be more interesting to watch, even if further from what the actual lost cut would have been. The intercutting between luke on the ground and the space battle worked surprisingly well, far better than keeping them as separate scenes. I didn't really like that you cut the opening shot in two, but i guess you cant please everybody. Lets just hope theres no v5 and this gets completed one day.

I had a eureka moment, that we have to cut to Luke first, the second that Stardestroyer rolls over head we don't give a sh*t about his story. This way he's caught right up in the drama because going by the script it's a bit odd that he's looking up and talking about a battle that is basically over. I reckon the opening battle of Tatooine was supposed to be more elaborate and longer which would have fitted that Luke scene better.

I'm about 35 minutes in now. I'm intercutting Luke's story with the Empire's story, so almost every scene of the Empire from the first half of the film will be brought forward to a new position. So hopefully this is gonna add an element of drama and danger to the otherwise peaceful portion of the film where we hangout with Luke on Tatoooine.

For example... instead of a fade-to-black after R2 runs off. We now cut to Vader interrogating Leia and then cut back to the morning with Luke going after R2.

Damn those last few screenshots make me so mad!

It isn't just the cropping, it's the messing with Kershner's perfectly composed shots. When there is a shot of Lando mucking about with some Falcon panels, why would you crop out half the panels?

(ESB:R recolouring looks gorgeous btw)

I'm just getting sick of superhero films in general.

I'm not (I lived through tooooo many years of my childhood where comic book movies sucked balls to not be glad of this purple patch this decade is in) but I do worry that the market is becoming over saturated and many are gonna feel the wy you feel soon.

e.g. Before my screening of 'Winter Soldier' there were three trailers only... X-Men:DOFP, Spiderman2(5) and GOTG. All Marvel-Universe films, all back-to-back, which felt like a bit of a strange experience. Luckily I think Marvel know they need to shake things up a bit. IronMan3 was all out comedy, Winter Soldier was political and GOTG looks to be going for a wacky Star Wars-esque vibe. They are also talking about having more female centered films, maybe a TV show set in the past and Dr Strange. I hope they also do some darker stuff too (R-Rated/18Certifate material maybe) like 'Dredd'. Keep diversifying in tone and content and they should be okay.

Seeing more of The Falcon cockpit in a higher resolution is clearly the way to go. Whatever arguments you can make about a low resolution zoomed and cropped shot being more realistic. I don't really care, I want every last atom of film that was originally shot and printed in ESB:R. Go Adywan! :-)

I have a feeling they're going to ruin the OT all over again by reviving the empire, and resurrecting Darth Vader and/or the emperor. Abrams is completely incapable of doing anything original anyways, so he will revive the empire for marketing purposes. I mean how can they make a Star Wars movie without darth vader or stormtroopers? It would mean the film makes $150 million instead if $500 million.

I may have said this before, but if Disney have got brains they'll know that the ammount of money that the ST makes at the boxoffice is kind of irrelevant. What matters is creating new, strong and exploitable intellectual properties that people engage with. So making cr*p PT style movies won't give them strong properties and just copying the OT won't give them new properties.

Only by creating 3 popular, acclaimed movies centered around new characters, new places and new stories, will they maximise the return on their investment.

So it's in Disney's financial interest to create something fresh and not "just put Vader in it". Whether or not they recognise this fact, is yet to be seen. They recognised that fact back in the 90s when they made an effort to create more new quality films despite the difficulty and expense of producing them. So a quarter century later, money is still pouring in from 'Beauty and the Beast' T-Shirts and 'Little Mermaid' lunchboxes as a result.

I've got 20 minutes done now (It's pretty quick work when I've cut this thing 3 times already). I'm making some great new choices I haven't thought of before. e.g. Leia now gives R2 the message in the heat of the battle. I think that's the way it was originally shot, as the material fits together perfectly in my new sequence. So now when R2 and C3PO are running across that dangerous blaster-bolt strewn corridor, they are already on their mission to get to the escape pod, adding nicely to the drama.

One think I want to suggest to both "Lost Cut" creators is to possibly replace all the space battle scenes with footage of models/toys in their place.  Wasn't Lucas not pleased with the initial battle footage?  So replace it with raw scenes.  This would be for someone who is adventurous in order to make the edit more of a completely different film like the "Lost Cut" is supposed to be.

Just a suggestion.

Nope (See first couple of pages).

I tried it for the first hour but it's just to much of a distraction. I had a B-17 as The Falcon for example. It would work for the dogfight at the end possibly but for a whole film it would be pretty tiresome. The true 'Lost Cut' just had black screens with the words "Cut to space battle" on them, which would make for boring viewing (Another faneditor is trying something along the Toys line but it's top secret).

(Think I've got that aborted V1-rough-cut first-hour around somewhere if anybody wants to see it)

BTW

Listening to lots of Classical music for score inspiration is loads of fun, makes me want to rescore the whole 6-films now ;-)

For example...

John Williams - Duel of the Fates

...equals...

Carl Orff - O Fortuna

(^ That observation isn't much use to this project though)

The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint (* unfinished project - lots of info *)
Time

It's been about a year since I started this project and a few months since my last update, so on with the show...

Last time I posted, I was about 95 minutes into editing Version 3 of this 'The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint' project... but I've chucked that in the bin. Time for Version 4!

A note on the versions:

V1: Cutting Blu-Ray Deleted Scenes in, in Draft Script order plus replacing all FX shots with temp stuff like B-17s and shots from 'Space: 1999'. Score retained. 60 Minutes long = Scrapped
V2: Cutting Blu-Ray Deleted Scenes in, in Draft Script order. FX shots retained but score replaced. 30 minutes long = Scrapped
V3: Cutting Blu-Ray Deleted Scenes and new E-Book Deleted Scenes in, with little refrence to Draft script and recutting a few bits for variety. FX shots retained but score replaced. 95 minutes long = Scrapped

Now, Version 4 will have a totally new "Temp" score, a new crawl, all footage restored from the Blu-Ray, E-Book and other sources. This time I will be completely ignoring the draft-script because I'm just gonna "Let go my conscious self and act on instinct" . I will be cutting the new footage in where I feel it works best for pacing, story and action. Plus if I can think of a way to recut the original film footage I will be (Not just rearranging scenes but going shot-by-shot). This will be as different an experience from the Theatrical Cut as I can make it.

Here is a "Sketch", if you will, of the new opening 6 minutes...

https://vimeo.com/91877504

(Password: fanedit.org)

Please note:
- All music replaced but unmixed in terms of levels
- A VERY temporary and unmixed audio FX track has been left on (Just for illustration)
- Aged film-stock effects are also temporary (See below)
- Crawl will be replaced, in all probability with the known 'Lost Cut' version of the words but maybe not
- The Stormtrooper assault you see a little of at the end has not be radically recut yet (It will be)

Here is a little test of some of the Aged film-stock effects that I will be using eventually (When I can get them perfected). It's overlaying real film damage..

https://vimeo.com/91741197

(Password: fanedit.org)

The amount of "damage" still needs a lot of work. Thanks to Rogue-theX for tips on how to do it.

Lastly here is a new teaser poster that may look familiar ...

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place
Time

Robert Llewellyn (aka Kryten from Red Dwarf) was being interviewed on Richard Herring's podcast the other week. He said the Kryten makeup was indeed a nightmare for the first few series, until Red Dwarf got really popular. Then he saw how much abuse and hassle the general public gave the rest of cast, while he kept his blissful anonymity. After that he was happy to spend the time in makeup putting on the rubber mask! x-D

(Every cloud)

I expect Patrick Stewart can't walk down the street without somebody shouting "Make it so" at full volume in his face. I bet Michael Dorn is glad he got cast as Worf.
