Wookieepedia is written by completeist fanboys who are overeagre to reinterpret everything into fitting together regardless of whether it does or not... Wookieepedia itself also acknowledges that the New Republic only captured Coruscant from the Imperials in 7 ABY, a few years after the Battle of Endor, and the Galactic Civil War itself came to a final end in 19 ABY.

Well then we can both agree that the post ROTJ situation is far from clear in the EU. The SE changes to the end of ROTJ muddied the waters further IMO. The original just left it open ended which would be best to setup the new films if they are going drop the New Republic angle.

I just thought it was a small ray-of-hope that we might get an OUT release before the new films but you've persuaded me to go back to being pessimistic about it :-(

4:3 DVDs from D1 masters were common in the '90s and early '00s, and they looked about the same as the GOUT.

You are aware that the GOUT only came packaged with the 2004SE in 16:9 aren't you? Does that not strike you as odd?

Actually there was a release with the 04 in 4:3 FS and the OUT in non-anamporphic WS. They're the ones I have, I got them from someone who didn't know the difference between full and wide screen...

Oh yes I forgot about those "Oops". Even stranger though that George should make a version of the SE especially for people to watch on 4:3 TVs but still include the GOUT in widescreen inside a 4:3 frame. Almost as if he wanted the GOUT to look terrible on both types of TVs... naaaah LOL.

I've been thinking... with the shots of the distinctly 'adhoc' looking X-Wing landing field and the pictures of Stormtrooper armour. It could suggest that JJ has gone with the "Rebels never actually defeated the Empire" interpretation of the OUT ending to ROTJ. Hell it would make a lot more sense than supposing that just by killing The Emperor, The Rebels magically made the Imperials all go away.

If this is the case. Two things could be concluded. One, that it explains the absolute need for the de-canonisation of all previous EU. Two, that it makes reaquainting the general public with a restored version of the OUT, without SE changes of vital importance.

Fingers crossed eh!

Most of the EU all but ignored the altered ending of ROTJ and went along with the idea that the Empire remained strong following the Battle of Endor, so I don't really see where you're going with this.

Granted I've not read an extensive amount of EU stuff. But I was under the impression that the remnants of the Empire were just lurking in the background and the new Republic was in charge? Maybe I'm wrong. Is all the old post ROTJ EU stuff about the Rebels still on the run and fighting for their existence from an undeminished Empire then?

Wait, looked it up on Wookiepedia legends...

"The death of Emperor Palpatine, in 4 ABY, at the Battle of Endor, signaled the end of the Empire... One month later, the official Declaration of a New Republic was issued"

Do see where I'm going with this now? ;-)

Uh, how? The end of SE ROTJ only shows that there are riots on Coruscant, not the end of the Empire.

I think that's underselling it somewhat! It featured riots, fireworks, flybys, stormtroopers being attacked, giant statues being toppled and "Wesa free!". There is a heavy implication that the Empire has fallen in the "official" cuts that most people are now sadly familiar with, there is no such suggestion of that in the OUT. Plus as I said all the old EU stuff about the fall of the Empire backed up the Lucas approved line that that was what you saw at the end of ROTJ SE.

What did Ghost Obi Wan mean?
Time

If we are talking OT continuity then "another" refers to Leia...

...but if we're talking PT continuity I have no bl**dy idea who Ben is referring to in that line. It can't be Leia because why would Yoda have to tell Ben that, they were both at the birth. Your guess is as good as mine???

Best just ignore the PT insanity.

Having said all that "another" could refer to an as yet unseen character in EpVII. I'm not sure if that would be "Oooooo goosebumps cool back refrence" or "Arrgghh stop messing with OT continuity"?

Discussion: What was (Or still is) your single favourite Star Wars toy?

Toys baring little-or-no resemblance to anything in the actual movie is something I kinda miss. I guess back in the day we only had that one slightly hazy memory of seeing it in the cinema, so toy makers didn't have to worry about it exactly matching in detail or scale. Today kids can probably look up blueprints for the DS on the internet and check the accuracy.

This ROTJ R2 that fired Luke's lightsaber out of the top of his head was a favourite too...

...but looking back on it, it couldn't have been less accurate if they tried. It's like they got Picasso to make the face on those figures...

What was (Or still is) your single favourite Star Wars toy?

What was it? What did it look like? Do you still have it? Why did you like it? When did you get it? etc

For me it was the ROTJ Speeder Bike…

I think it hit Europe in '85 (I may be wrong) so I probably got it for that Christmas, as I recall, all my presents that year were ROTJ figures.

The reason I liked it so much is of course because if you pressed the button on the back it violently exploded! (At least it seemed violent in my imagination). Then you had to pickup all the pieces clip them all back together and blow it up all over again. The detailing was really good too with the moveable flaps and laser-cannon underneath. I must have liked it because unlike most of my toys, I didn’t lose any of the parts for years. The figures always looked rubbish because it never fitted the seat properly but you can’t have everything.

Look over there, a vintage commercial…

It’s pretty sweet that they are remaking it for the Black Series…

Doctor Who

The Doctor is...

1/3rd Londoner, 1/4th Scottish, 1/6th Liverpudlian and the other 3/12ths are South-Western, East-Midlands and North-Western. So there has never been a regeneration from the North-East, West-Midlands or Northern-Ireland, dammit I demand that the next Doctor should be a Mackem!

I don't know why but I thought that was important to work out LOL

But children are supposed to find Doctor Who scary?!

Kids being so scared that they have to watch from "Behind the sofa" is virtually the moto of the show. There is a fan site called...

www.behindthesofa.org.uk

Plus anything in this series so far is about 1% as scary as some of the sh*t from the classic era.

(Although possibly Bonnie Langford's winny high-pitched voice was more scary than the actual monster)

Even The Doctor was scared ^

Oh and...

Despite everything that looks wrong with this, I'm looking forward to the movie-length first part like nothing else. Because from a certain point of view, it's the first proper* Star Wars movie to be released in 30 years!

(* I choose to define "proper" as it featuring Stormtroopers, the Empire, Rebels, beat-up technology, new young charismatic characters, fun, excitement and everything that the 3 prequels and the Clone Wars movie lacked)

Correction. When they said "movie-length", they actually meant "not movie-length". I'm going back to my default pessimism about this show.

Those aren't main cast and most aren't even named on screen.

If by "Most", you mean "A quarter", then yes ;-)

For the record I agree with your general point. Outside of the OT (Which isn't totally immune) there are some truly terrible name choices. Almost to the point that you think the writers are trying to make them laughably bad on purpose. The worst is when they just pick a name for evil at random from the dictionary and call the villain that e.g.

Savage Opress from TCW and Agent Kallus from the new Rebels show.

It shows a woeful lack of imagination that is almost impressive. I'm sure at some point in the future there'll be a Sith Lord called 'Baad Gi', it's just a matter of when.

Sure we do...

But seriously, it's officially 18+ to drink in the UK but minors can go in pubs when accompanied by their parents and if your dad bought you a quiet ale, most bars wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Why do characters post ROTJ have to have weird space-names?
The characters in the OT had normal names. Luke, Ben, Han, Leia, Lando. But in the PT and EU (what little I know of both) the new characters all seem to have silly sci-fi type names. Seems goofy to me.
I'm pretty sure that trend will continue into the ST.

I know, I can't move for people called Lando in my neck of the woods.
