Speaking of Trump voter remorse:

Some of those tweets are truly astonishing in their idiocy. How can you regret voting for Trump, when he is behaving just the same as he did before polling day? (like a big petulant man-baby). I guess there is one born every minute.

For example…

“Mr. President I voted for you but what you are doing to the Indians with the pipeline is sickening be a human being”

Trump said Global warming was invented by the Chinese! He’s exactly what you voted for.

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

But the horrible music scene that I was talking about is the one in Jabba’s Palace. I mean some say that it’s the special edition version that’s horrible but I went back to the original and they’re both very cringe-worthy…

The SE Jedi Rocks is a hideously misjudged 90s CGI travesty. It’s part of the reason I think the younger generations get the impression that ROTJ is close to the Prequels. The original “seedy” ‘Lapti Nek’ music is great IMO.

I mean, this is just my opinion but I’m a musician and one of the reasons I love Star Wars more than anything is because it’s set in a different Galaxy and not having anything ‘Earth-like’… the music sounds like it’s taken straight out of a NYC lounge of the time… in ANH, John Williams did such a great job with the Cantina band song, it was influenced by many earth folk styles but blended together in such a way that it sounds ‘alien’.

This 1928 Benny Goodman piece sounds pretty “Alien” too…

http://deadspin.com/shad-khan-comes-out-against-trumps-muslim-ban-1792011708

I’m going to repeat the entire column here because it’s short, but also because the consistency in the paragraphs is admirable.

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan, who voted for Donald Trump, is speaking out against Trump’s ban on refugees and on all entry from seven majority-Muslim countries. While NBA representatives have been vocal in expressing their disapproval of the ban, the NFL has been mostly silent—making Khan’s voice a prominent one.

Khan, who voted for Donald Trump, is himself Muslim. He told the New York Times he had expected Trump to be more moderate upon entering office and praised the court system for blocking the ban.

Khan, who voted for Donald Trump, is himself an immigrant. He told the paper that the ban is “not good” and that he believes immigration is the “bedrock of our country.” The Jaguars owner was born in Pakistan and arrived in the U.S. in 1967.

Khan, a registered Republican who voted for Donald Trump, also spoke of his support for a human rights ordinance in Jacksonville that would make it illegal to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community. That law—similar to those in more than 20 other cities—has been consistently rejected by Republican politicians in that city.

Khan, who voted for Donald Trump, also told the Times he is a strong proponent of NAFTA and that he opposes Trump’s attempts to repeal it.

I noticed at the bottom of that article somebody had posted…

I disagree that any scene in ROTJ is “horrible”

What of Ewok story time? That was pretty bad man…

I actually like the story time scene…

I think that idea should have been used for the Holiday Special.

Nah. In the Holiday Special it wouldn’t have been Threepio telling our heroes story, featuring just the best bits… it would have been Chewbacca re-telling the story across a full 4-hours in untranslated Wookiee growls.

The scene feels like the SW equivalent of the Bard sitting round the fire telling stories of might and legend.

Totally Star Wars and not horrid in the slightest. By the way, it’s true… all of it.

I disagree that any scene in ROTJ is “horrible” but which music sequence are you talking about? I can think of a few.

that scene with Luke and Leia… it’s very close to the ‘I don’t like sand’

I made that meme specially LOL

this part scared the crap out of me when I was… 4 maybe? I can’t remember how old I was.

Yeah the droid torture is part of what makes Jabba’s palace such a scary place. You keep hearing people saying Droids feeling pain is nonsensical but it’s established in the other movies that they feel pain and pleasure. Star Wars ain’t hard sci-fi and never was.

The Death Star trench run

ray_afraid said:

Oh, we’ve noticed…

Actually, in the original version, not only is the dish missing, but so is the entire right side! 😃

Yes, I’m sure everyone here was aware of that.

The point I was making was that the missing dish was because it’s supposed to be a different freighter. If it was supposed to be the Falcon, they’d hardly have made that mistake now would they?

For years people have foolishly assumed the dish was missing because of budgetary constraints. But just like with the trench, the difference was obviously a deliberate creative choice to confuse the audience.

Having iconic and memorable “establishing” shots of diminishing size both moving from left-to-right across the horizontal plane…

…that clearly “established” the trench being the same one, was actually a clever ruse to confuse the audience all these years. It brilliantly fixes the wrong location of the action in the minds of the viewers in 3-demensions, on an almost subliminal level. Well played Lucasfilm, well played.

Hmmm…

Matte painting and model don’t match because it’s a different trench.

…or…

Matte painting and model don’t match because it’s a movie.

By the way… It’s crazy to think that nearly everybody still thinks that the YT-1300 freighter that we first see in this shot:

…is the Millennium Falcon.

In fact if you watch that scene again you’ll notice that it is never referred to as such in the actual scene. A shoot out occurs where Han kills some Stormtroopers and then we see a long shot of a different YT-1300 freighter leaving Mos Eisley in this shot:

How do we know this? Because the unnamed ship in the hangar does not have the distinctive radar dish that we see in all other shots of the Falcon. I bet you never noticed it before but it’s as clear as day. Obviously Han and co did a quick switch of ships to put the Imperials off the scent.

I’m kinda glad that they didn’t emphasize all of the small details like this in the movie. It makes it seem more realistic, at least in my opinion. These sort of things should be stuff that you notice in the background, not something that’s thrown in your face. If you think about it, they pretty much did the same thing in the OT.

Yes, that was my point. You can notice it in the background while other more important stuff is going on in the foreground. However, when the direction and editing are so terrible, you don’t even have a chance to notice these things in the background. You don’t get the chance to notice them at all.

You might not have noticed… but your brain did.

The Significance of British Accents in Star Wars
Time

LexX said:

Man I hated that British dialect from the beginning of Rogue One, I don’t know who that guy was. Took me right out of the movie. Was it Scottish or whatever. I’m talking about the guy who Cassian meets in the streets.

It was Daniel Mays, a rather good actor. He’s from Essex (It’s the Jersey of London LOL).

I did find it oddly distracting as it was not something I’d heard in SW before. I was also initially distracted by the new strong Glasgow and Indonesian accents in TFA. I guess it’s down to the Star Wars accents being quite rigidly American and RP British before. The sudden and heavy use of Aussie/Kiwi accents in AOTC and ROTS was and is strange. If ANH had kept the west-country, Scottish and Cockney accents we’d probably be used to it.

Now that I think of it… Diego Luna’s strong Mexican accent in R1 wasn’t something I even noticed. Is there something about a Spanish twang that immediately says “Rebel-Space-Assassin”? Or maybe as Star Wars has a big toe in the Western genre, that accent just feels so right for a SW gunslinger.

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread

they easily could have cut Cassian and Bodhi’s first scenes which would have really simplified it.

With my fanediting hat on, that definitely occurred to me at first but then later in the movie you realise that the Cassian scene (where he murders an informant) was really needed to make the audience believe that he was a killer fully capable of assassinating Galen if he’d chosen to do so. Bodhi’s intro was less essential.

DominicCobb said:

Just thinking, this is the fourth Star Wars prequel and the first that doesn’t manage to totally fuck up any aspect of the continuity.

Too true. There was nothing that made me feel like it wasn’t what could have happened before ANH.

DominicCobb said:

Only thing I can think of is Vader saying “beamed” though I’m sure there’s an explanation.

You mean he says “beamed” in ANH but it’s not beamed in R1? I forget what exactly happened in the chaos of the battle. Jyn “beamed” the plans to the fleet and then it was later on a disc.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

TFA now available in an oldskool “Laserdisc/LP” style release…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4pCno1wRI4

Note that it’s the new “Collector’s edition” release with commentary and bonus disc with all the extra features but without the 3D blu-ray disc, for the same price of £19.99.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Wars-Awakens-Sleeve-Blu-ray/dp/B01LY3PI1H

So if like me, the 3D disc was just going to be a fancy coaster anyway, it might be worth getting this unusual release instead for no extra pennies.

(Shame the artwork is a bit bland)

The Place to Go for Emotional Support

Wish I had words for you guys.

I’ve had a rough go of it myself these last couple months. Doesn’t look like it’ll be getting better anytime soon. I’m honestly in a very dark place right now. I’m usually very optimistic about everything but that’s taken a sharp 180. I would never think of suicide but it’s probably safe to say that I’m at least depressed. Hard to see right now how not everything fucking sucks.

It happens to everyone at some point (For some reason, or for no reason)… then years later you look back at that point and you can’t even work out how you got into that head-space. Trust me it’ll happen.

I know this is only the interwebz but you have friends here and over on fanedit.org who appreciate you.

The Amazon customer reviews of the actual transfer are not good either… the film itself is of course a masterpiece, as all right thinking people agree.

EDIT: I just noticed that the renowned Shakespearean actor “Patrick Steward” is in this version!
