John Williams CONFIRMED for Episode VII

I just listened to The Last Crusade soundtrack again today, and man, several parts sounded like they were right out of Empire.

I agree that Williams is best with themes. The Holy Grail theme is just so great, woven into the rest of the music, it gives the trilogy the perfect sendoff.

Thats what I was getting at. e.g. the 'Circus Train chase' sounds a hell of alot like some of the Endor/Ewok music from ROTJ. But then the main 'Holy Grail' theme is so beautiful I wanna cry tears of joy.

Yeah I think shear laziness is a factor. As Adywan said about CGI R2 in ROTS looking fake. One of the reasons is that he is noticably more matt than usual. Saves alot of time not having to do complicated reflection effects... lazy.

As Bester said the real props, ships, locations and sets on TPM are beautiful. Whatever you think about the story Theed looked great.

If you want to get pissed off at this kinda thing listen to the first 1/2 hr of the commentaries for ROTS and ROTJ:SE. You have the FX guys on ROTS proudly declaring that they didn't even create a physical Clone Trooper suit for Temuera to wear. And on ROTJ (During the new Jabba dance scene) you get Lucas laughing and saying "I don't get these people that say oh the CGI looks fake... it's all fake. It always has been" (Paraphrasing). Which is of course wrong, Models and puppets are REAL, it's the scale that is the illusion.

Let's have the ST done the Peter Jackson/Christopher Nolan way. All practical unless it is ABSOLUTELY impossible. With a nice bit of digital compositing to smooth things over. I never stop being amazed by the behind the scenes videos of those two guys movies. Amazing what they can achieve in camera with simple often silent-era tricks.

I hate to be that guy, but remember this stuff about models and actual locations was touted as a triumphant homage for Crystal Skull as well... at least I know the matte paintings were. That didn't really happen. This sounds like a good PR spin, especially given that she says they're only "looking" at these options right now. Don't be surprised if the movie is mostly CG effects; I won't complain, but I know some people will

I'd love to get the scoop on what really happened over KOTCS. Spielberg in his intro to the DVD is flatout saying "I thought the alien idea was terrible but George insisted" and "I thought the fridge idea was terible but George insisted". He seems almost faintly depressed about the whole project in the BTS interviews.

As I recall it was Speilberg who made the pre-production statement that said it would be "mostly practical effects". So I wonder if he shot and completed his cut and only then turned it over to Lucas and ILM. And Lucas just went crazy with the CGI against or without Spielberg's wishes. Wasn't the hideously CGI enhanced Jeep chase shot practically.

Hope JJ has final cut. If Speilberg can't get final cut over Lucas nobody can lol

yeah. Sadly can't see it. It coulda worked for Padme addressing the senate in TRM but ROTR...???

Wow 58 million views. It never stops being funny. Speaking about foreign policy less coherently than Salin Palin must have taken some supreme effort from that girl lol

btw Have I suggested this before for Padme laughing at Anakin's "Joke" during the apartment balcony scene...

John Williams CONFIRMED for Episode VII
Time

As a writer of film scores Williams is overrated IMO. Brilliant, but overated. Ennio Morricone and Bernard Hermann are the greatest ever composers of film scores. Every score they did featured a whole new soundscape of different instruments and emotional depths.

The linking scores in Williams work are usually a rehash of everything he's done before. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park are so similar.

But what Williams does best is themes, the main themes he creates are iconic from Jaws, to Raiders, Harry Potter, Superman, Jurassic Park, to even Duel Of The Fates. Ask anybody and I bet they could hum at least 4 or 5 straight off. You can't say that about any other composer. Even Beethoven or Mozart.

As long as he gets the time to write a few truelly great themes, all will be well. A war theme, a love theme, an evil theme, an action theme and a sad theme etc and we're cooking. It wouldn't be Star Wars without John Williams.

Not mine, but thought it had some good moments. Only problem is I wouldn't know where to get the sources for the JEJ audio.

As far as I'm concerned Vader should always come on to 'Walk On By' by Isaac Hayes (3.20 in the clip^). One of the most awesome pieces of music ever...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXlUNuBYGgU

I never get tired of watching that 'Vader Sessions' clip. Favourite bit is when Vader says...

"I quit on you when you cleared outta Dee-troit with Willie the Pimp"

Most of the dialogue is from...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaatLmePZBc

^ skip to about 10-13 minutes in to hear alot of it (Damn JEJ is amazing in it)

Some of the dialogue is taken from the notorious film 'Soul Man'...

This clip shouldn't be funny...

^ I'm sure everyone involved meant well.

I am not sure where this would fit:

James Earl Jones' performance in Comin to America is comedy gold. There was also a funny video on youtube where someone dubbed the quotes from Coming to America onto A New Hope.

Possible Vader Dialogue:

  • Believe me. I tied my own shoes once. It is an overrated experience.
  • Time does fly fast, my son. It seems only yesterday I ordered your first diaper changed. Now you're a man about to be married.
  • I am looking for my son Luke.
  • Admiral Piett, you have disgraced yourself, and you must be punished. Confine yourself to our royal suite at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Watched Coming to America yesterday It's like the writers deliberately wrote lines for JEJ to sound like Star Wars. Frink could probably cut every line into the ridiculous OT

I thought the story was all ready to go back in November. He's the director, not the writer. I know the screenplay itself is a different matter, and it does take time to iron it out, but they've had the better part of a year now to work on it. I'm scratching my head as to why he would still need more time.

It can take a hell of a time to get things right in a screenplay. Live action 'Akira' has been written and re-written for 10 years and the latest version of the script for 'Mad Max 4' finally got greenlit after a quarter century, also 'Watchmen' and 'Les Mis' took about 25 years to get right too.

It was worth the wait for those last two and I'm happy to wait longer for 'Akira' as it sounds like the current team behind it haven't a clue. I'm more than happy to wait another year or two for Star Wars, rather that it being rushed.

A scary amount of top level blockbusters go into production these days without a finished script nevermind a good script. Matt Damon said he turned down the 4th Bourne film because they didn't have a script. The money offered was huge but not nearly enough to go into something like that blind. Instead he signed on for Neill Blomkamp's new Sci-Fi epic 'Elysium', hurray!

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread

I was re-listening to an old episode of RHLSTP from last year when Peter Serafinowicz is talking about his experience working on TPM. Very funny stuff, if you haven't yet listened check it out (Free of charge)...

RHLSTP Episode 12: Peter Serafinowic

About 25 or so minutes of Star Wars chat from around 12.00 to 38.00. Lots of insider info amongst the laughs.

"Fans of Star Wars will be creaming out of their arm pits when they hear his tales of working with George Lucas and having to pay to go to the premiere. Astonishing stuff. Rich provides an alternate reading of Darth Maul for the next director's cut"
