'Rush' 2013 (At cinemas now)

It was like... freeeowwn, bruuum, raooorr, kechaaang, vrmm, vrmm, neeeown, screeeeech!!!!

But seriously, it's 'Rush' by name 'Rush' by nature. The sound design and exhilerating direction combine to make a film that captures speed and it's danger like nothing I've seen before.

Chris Hemsworth as Hunt and Daniel Brühl as Lauda are so perfectly cast. At the end it cuts briefly to actual footage of them and for a second I didn't even notice. 'Downfall's Alexandra Maria Lara as Lauda's wife is outstanding too. The film tells the stories of both men simultaneously yet seperately in a way that felt fresh, I could never decide who I was rooting for more!

The film also looks like it was shot in the 70s, after his work on 'Dredd', Anthony Dod Mantle is fast becoming my favourite Cinematographer.

It took me most of my life to summon the willpower to sit through all of '2001', as I always seemed to slip into a boredom induced coma about 45 minutes in. But after finally seeing a couple of years ago, it's alright, looks very nice, sounds nice but is painfully slow. Watching a space air-hostess walk very, very slowly along a velcro floor isn't my idea of exhilerating/mind-expanding sci-fi ;-)

Also I always disliked 'The Shining' until I saw the longer US cut last year, which I loved. I'd rank Kubrick's films as follows...

1) 1957 Paths of Glory
2) 1964 Dr. Strangelove
3) 1975 Barry Lyndon
4) 1960 Spartacus
5) 1971 A Clockwork Orange
6) 1956 The Killing
7) 1980 The Shining (US Cut)
8) 1987 Full Metal Jacket
9) 1955 Killer's Kiss
10) 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey
11) 1999 Eyes Wide Shut
12) 1962 Lolita
13) 1953 Fear and Desire

Chewie didn't die in the movies.  Everything that isn't in a movie is fair game for change.

J.J. better not go giving him a medal and messing up adywan's continuity, or I'll be pissed.

Hell, he could make Chewie a girl for all we know so far!

Is Chewie not a girl? Hard to tell through all that fur

The "Jedi vs. Sith" thing is played out and tired. If they need evil Force-users to appear in the ST, then they can use Dark Jedi or come up with a new darkside religion.

Call me stupid but aren't 'Sith' and 'Dark Jedi' basically the exact same thing???

I've no problem with there being 'Sith' in EpVIII. Dark Force vs Light Force is what Star Wars is all about. It's like saying, oh no not another Klingon confrontation in Star Trek, I'm done with seeing the Doctor face of against the Daleks or lets kill off the Joker because there is nothing interesting that can be done with that character and Batman anymore.

It's down to the writing. Sith are gonna be in it, they just need to have good lines, good plots and great performances.

The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint (* unfinished project - lots of info *)
Time

I'm having another go at this project. I'm coming up to the half/third mark and have just done the scene in Obi Wan's home. I've recut the sequence in the original aka Adywan's order. I've cut it slightly differently to Adywan's version in a few shots and added a small deleted shot of Luke at the end...

(^ Click image to watch video)

^ Bare in mind that although the video is finished, the audio is just temporary and I will be replacing all the music (e.g. the new music won't step all over Luke's new final line).

^ Harrison Ford and Benedict Cumberbatch on Graham Norton last ngiht (Warning also contains Jack Whitehall). Some brief Star Wars chat and tomfoolery from about 18 minutes in. Interesting that when Benedict is asked if he's gonna be in EpVIII he declines to answer. So it's fair to assume he's being considered for a role at least.

Sorry folks another problem in the command center.

The line "launch Patrols"

A totally different line is mouthed a couple of seconds earlier after leia says "we have no choice" and the audio line is never actually said it is inserted audio.

Does anyone know what the line is Rieekan was actually meant to say via an unedited script???

I guess this has been there since the original theatrical release.

*edit*

He does actually say launch patrols it's just totally out of sync

Rough mock up of what I am trying to say about command center.

1st original and then repeated rough audio edits.

You're still seeing something that isn't there. "Launch patrol" is NOT out of sync. Look closely when he turns and says the line. It's clearly what he is saying. The bit where he nods & mouths something  is just an acknowledgement towards what leia has said.

Yes he is clearly saying 'Launch Patrol' as he turns round. Saying the line to Leia makes no sense in any case as she is the one giving him orders. It does seem that he saying something to the effect of "Yes sir". Maybe he's saying "Waldorf Salad"? ;-)

EDIT: Actually looking at it again, I don't think he is saying anything he's just doing that pre speech jaw thing...

Given the amount of 'repeats' the BBC has been so fond of giving us over the years (some welcome, some not), I still find it incredible that there was a time where they routinely and short-sightedly erased some of their output in the past.

It's quite common sadly.

I was rewatching the Blade Runner restoration documentaries the other week and that team found all the film stock for BR, deleted material/negatives/FX footage etc on a big pallet that was marked for being destroyed. Luckily there had been a mix up so the final memo to burn it all had never gone through, and it was just sitting in limbo when they rescued it.

A read an article about a famous film Director in the early 00s who was going to do a director's cut/deluxe-DVD package etc for his film and found the studio had binned all of it without even consulting him. Years of his work and future profits gone. Wish I could remember who it was.

I've long thought about using the Life of Brian UFO bit but not exactly sure where.

Maybe in RESB when Luke falls of the Bespin gantry only to be scooped up just like Brian. Then cut in shots of Luke's face from the Shuttle Tyderian sequence into the alien cockpit shots. Then he gets dropped back into the Bespin tube at the end as if nothing happened.

Looking at it, if you coloured timed the shot of the ship hurtling towards Jurusalem to a redish orange it could pass for Bespin at a glance.

OR

Cut together the extra deleted footage of the Stormtroopers searching Mos Eisley (Where people are fleeing before them) with fooage of Brian being chased through the streets of Jurusalem and have the Alien abduction happen there.

Luckily enough the sound of the Roman's armour rattling as they chase Brian sounds just like stormtroopers. So no redub required ;-)

I'd vote for the later idea and have the entire 2 minute sequence uncut in the middle of ARH! (Maybe add in some John Williams) It would be awesome :-D

OOH OOH! Additional! - You can dub the shot of Threepio peaking out of the door after the Stormtroopers pass with the camp "Oooh you lucky bastard" line from LOB. It even sounds like Anthony Daniels ;-)

I'm watching too many movies to effectively give reviews, but lately I've seen:

Sunset Blvd. (The narration was well used. Haven't seen any narration that was so effective yet on IMDB quest.)

I highly reccomend watching all of the first 18 or so of Gene Wilder's films. It's probably the longest "purple patch" any director has ever had. My favourites are either 'Sunset Blvd' or 'The Lost Weekend' if I want drama and 'The Seven Year Itch' if I want comedy (Marilyn Monroe is eye-meltingly stunning in the later!)
