Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I used to take stock in reviews, until I realized movies are a deeply personal experience, and the only opinion that really matters to me anymore is my own. šŸ˜‰

With Roger Ebert’s passing, I don’t think there’s anyone left with any real clout to pass judgement on a film. Even the studios are starting to use Rotten Tomatoes scores in their ads.

I agree with you about Ebert. His writing, to me, made me love movies as much as anything else. I have come to find though in his absence there are several other critics I really trust. Mick LaSalle being one of them. Ebert even praised Lasalle (and his unique ratings system) on occasions.

How spoilery does the review get? I started reading it, but after seeing how long it goes on (i.e., a real article instead of a blurb), I imagine there must be enough substance to refer to specifics…

Light spoilers I would say. Nothing that gives anything massive away. Perhaps I should have posted in the other thread.

I’m still having trouble burning a DVD+R DL on a MBP running Mac OS X Mavericks from the AVCHD (DVD9) version that’s linked on tehparadox and hosted on uloz.

I’ve tried using Apple’s Disk Utility app and Sarner–Hauser’s Disco app. I’ve tried burning the ISO, the ISO and MDS, the ISO and MDS and TXT, the BDMV, and the BDMV and CERTIFICATE.

OS X System Information reports my optical drive can write to DVD+R DL, but each time I only end up with a data disc, not a playable disc.

Anyone succeeded at this? Which files am I supposed to burn? Which apps/methods do you recommend?

Much obliged.

I had the EXACT same problem. I’m a MBP user, with OS X El Capitan. My resolution was to use Mac DVD Ripper to burn the ISO file.

I didn’t pay for it, I think you can do unlimited burning without actually paying. I successfully used this software to burn the AVCHD iso to DVD9 (DVD+R DL).

Good luck.

Finn’s dodge has me even more excited than Kylo’s fancy move. This is going to be messy and I love it.

Agree. From Driver and Boyega’s own description the fighting is much more brutal and personal.

The main problem with the OT & PT lightsaber fighting are the stakes. In the OT there is true personal conflict in every single confrontation with real life stakes. In the PT the opposite seems to be the case.

Good compilation for someone that wants to understand the changes, succinctly. I think they pretty much hit all the high points, err, low points.

There are many others that get under my skin but for what it is, it’s not a bad list.

There’s also this, POSSIBLE SPOILER: when Kylo and Finn confront each other Kylo’s mask is knocked off, revealing that he is in some way disfigured. Which is why in the various advertisements and trailers, during that momentary interlude with Finn, we don’t see Kylo’s face; only the back of his head.
Thoughts?

They’ve released a few set pictures of Driver without the mask. Unless that’s deliberate misdirection, it looks like he’s undamaged. I’d be just fine with that. We don’t need everyone in the GFFA to have some sort of physical damage. His story sounds plenty compelling. Less is more.

I’ve seen the Annie Leibovitz photo’s you are probably referencing (from Vanity Fair, I think) and agree with you on principle. I just wonder if there’s a plot twist; and if so I doubt it would be made public on purpose.

I keep thinking to myself that the more this gains notoriety the more inevitable a commercial release of the Theatrical OT probably is.

I’m reminded of some years ago (mid-00’s) The Beatles American albums had never been released on CD and Capitol records reluctantly put out two box sets, in limited release, of the original American versions. This was supposedly done to stem the tide of the lucrative underground market for people that wanted THOSE versions they grew up with.

Then in 2014, after many years of never completing the previous project Capitol/EMI did a full on deluxe roll out of the American albums; of course 2014 was the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles first playing on Ed Sullivan, etc.

Once Disney finally gets the mindset that this is basically ā€˜found money’, it will happen. Quite frankly, I’m fairly certain just given the lengths Disney goes to to please fans that this is a fait accompli. Perhaps the only thing left to decide is a release date. Mid 2016 to tie in with the Blu-ray of The Force Awakens? Or Christmas 2016 when Rogue One is in cinemas? Or May 2017 for the 40th Anniversary?

It’s when, not if at this point.

Is anyone else kind of fascinated by the character of Kylo Ren? Besides the obvious anagram name Kylo (Skywalker/Solo), there’s the actor himself. I’m not a fan of HBO’s show ā€œGirlsā€ but every interview I have seen with Adam Driver he just comes off as so down to earth. It makes me really very interested to see how that kind of fellow would play someone with presumably very complex motivations like Kylo Ren.

Also equally fascinating about this character is his costume design. I understand that the costume designer and Abrams really agonized on the look of Kylo. I’m not a fan of the EU (now legacy) but as I understand it the mask is something of a nod to Darth Revan. The cloak looks like something i can’t quite explain but there are also garments under the cloak that look almost samurai in nature. Then there’s his unique lightsaber design which, as I have read, Jony Ive from Apple might have suggested to Abrams that this character have an ā€˜unwieldy’ weapon. Very rough around the edges.

Obviously, we’ll know for sure in a few days, but piecing together various sources and theories, it would seem as though Kylo is perhaps the son of Leia & Han and that he is, perhaps, a black sheep of the family who is very much estranged from his parents or in denial, or both. Either way, I can’t wait to find out how this all unfolds. The trailers feel like they are note perfect in their presentation of the material, every beat is perfectly timed. Fingers crossed.

Thoughts?

There are so many press junket interviews (I’m making it my goal this week to watch all of them). I wouldn’t dare link all of them but I felt like this one was pretty good for the topics covered.

Hey guys, I’ve just recently downloaded the AVCHD of SW and TESB, the .iso versions, but I’m having issues trying to burn them to a DVD+R DL on my Macbook. Trying to use Disc Utility, that’s a non-starter…it errors before I even start.

I’m presume the majority of users here are Windows, but if there are any Mac users on here that have had success burning these please relay your process to me.

Thanks in advance.

I had no issue at all using Disk Utility for the AVCHDs, but I made my own ISOs from the BDMV folders by running imgburn with a wineskin (I couldn’t burn straight from imgburn because it couldn’t find my disc drive). I wasn’t aware there were premade ISOs out there. Maybe there’s something wrong with those particular files? If not, I’ve got nothing.

FYI, I found what worked for me. I don’t want to sound like I’m plugging them, I’m not. It’s free to use this software as a burner, AFAIK. Mac The Ripper allowed me to successfully burn AVCHD DVD-9 file.

Thanks all.

I always figured it was reasonable that a guy who looks and sounds exactly like the clones would want to do whatever he could to change his appearance and voice in the wake of the Clone Wars. That’s why I think it would be easy to cast an actor who looks nothing like Temeura Morrison in the rumored Boba Fett movie. Just say he had reconstructive surgery and cultivated a different accent or something.

For real. Anything that distances from the PT the better, in my opinion. I hate that Jason Wingreen’s voice got dubbed out of TESB. I presume the Casting Director for TESB (and Irvin Kershner) picked Wingreen for a particular reason to do the voice work for Boba. He sounds kind of sinister in the unaltered version.
